Uni immunisations

Hi , my dd is off to uni in sept and I’ve checked with the Dr about immunisations she has said that they’re all up to date
A lot of forums that I’ve read advise Men B which isn’t given on the NHS
The Dr has said it’s not not recommended unless clinically advised
It seems a lot of parents are paying for the MenB .

If you're worried, why not get it?

The NHS do not advise but many parents pay for their dc to have it, you can get it via Boots.

If you search using the magnifying glass on the Facebook page WIWIKAU you get lots of info including accounts of dc who got meningitis B and hadn't had the vaccine.

Make sure they've had all their childhood immunisations including two doses of MMR and those given at high school - booster Dip, Tet, Polio, Meningitis ACWY and HPV.
Men B is two doses, private vaccine, completely optional.

There was a spate of students getting mumps a few years ago - not sure if it's still a problem. Some combination of being the generation affected by that bloody Wakefield putting parents off MMR, and the vaccine waning.
There's research suggesting a third mmr jab may be beneficial for this age ... dd knows someone who unfortunately has some damage as the result of late teenage mumps so she wanted it.

Thankyou all for your replies , my dd had her MMR jabs she’s all up to date
I think I’ll pay for the Men b

My daughter's uni had an outbreak of MenB earlier this year and they were all advised to get it.

Duchess87 · 30/04/2024 20:51

Thankyou , I don’t think it’s worth the risk , some people can’t afford to have it , it’s expensive

Does anyone know how long the men b vaccination lasts for ?

We live in the US. My daughters pediatrician asks all the kids at 16 if they intend to go on to University. If the answer is yes then she strongly recommends the Meng B vaccine otherwise she does not routinely give it.
