Incredible news @Waferbiscuit so pleased for your dd

After my previous posts yesterday about DD going for her insurance, midwifery, and despite having grades slightly less than needed, BSMS has confirmed her place this morning!

So she is going to be studying medicine after all and off to Brighton in September. What a rollercoaster! Hope your DS got in too, @Mumofboys2006!

It's an absolute miracle, I don't know how it happened. But it's good to know that it's possible and some institutions are being a bit flexible.

Got the shivers reading this. What fabulous news.

Mumofboys2006 · 15/08/2024 10:22

@Waferbiscuit - wow! Amazing! Well done your DD!

Yes, DS also off to BSMS!

AAB - missed an A in Chemistry by four points but still got an offer. I think there’s a few kids who’ve just missed their grades this year so we’ll be asking for a remark.

Hes always got As and A* in Chemistry so its really odd.

I think that some of the unis are being a bit lenient this year - he’s got really good GCSE’s and had a high BMAT which I’m sure helped.

Groundhogday2021 · 15/08/2024 10:23

Oh my goodness @Waferbiscuit ! Such amazing news for your dd! 🎉

Congratulations to all others with good news too today and so sorry to hear about those being re-directed. Such a long journey.

Our dd is very happy to be joining Bristol Medical School in a few weeks time. 😊🎉

Waferbiscuit · 15/08/2024 08:55

I'm so sorry @ipredictariot5 That's so hard (and so cruel for someone to do the dumping right before exams!). Did she definitely not get her place/choices?

@ipredictariot5 - so sorry to hear that. Definitely worth ringing the unis she had offers for and also others through clearing 🤞🏼🤞🏼

W0tnow · 15/08/2024 11:45

All good here. She actually received an email from her uni confirming her place before the grades were released, so we’ve been out for cocktails (we’re on holiday so it’s evening here).

Thrilled for your daughter @Waferbiscuit !

Mumofboys2006 · 15/08/2024 12:07

mumsneedwine · 15/08/2024 09:56

Grade boundaries for chemistry are high (as usual much higher than biology).
Few Unis taking slipped grades this year.

Thats interesting @mumsneedwine about Chemistry. DS was saying grade boundary was slightly lower this year for Chemistry

Barleypilaf · 15/08/2024 12:24

Depends on the exam board. For OCR an A in chemistry is 78.5%, which is ridiculously high.

Fiftiesishard · 15/08/2024 12:39

The grade boundaries dropped for AQA Chemistry this year (needed 198/300 for an A, compared to 210/300 last year). Biology went the other way - you needed 153/260 last year for an A, you needed 165/260 this year.

Sybill · 15/08/2024 14:34

Wow @Waferbiscuit huge congrats to your DD, am so happy for her! What a rollercoaster for you, but worth it in the end!

and congrats to everyone else who had their place confirmed but sorry to hear from those that haven’t, for now. I’ve never heard anyone say they regretted a gap year, always turns out to be the best thing, so good luck for the next step of the journey 👍

losingtheplot999 · 15/08/2024 18:14

Congratulations to everyone on their results today. DS2 got the grades for his Cambridge offer.

WhamFantastic · 15/08/2024 19:51

Well done to all the successful students and best wishes for those on another journey. Agree no one regrets a gap year and the more experience someone has the better a medical student they are IMO!

Thanks to all on this thread for help and support over the last year.

@losingtheplot999 my DS also going to Cambridge! So delighted and excited for him.

losingtheplot999 · 15/08/2024 20:31

That's great to hear @WhamFantastic they might even be in the same college!

Waferbiscuit · 15/08/2024 21:37

Congrats @WhamFantastic and @losingtheplot999

My DD is not on ‘another journey ‘ she got three med school offers and missed her grades only due to being dumped two weeks before her exams
she is distraught and feeling like a failure so no platitudes please

coffeeandbiscuittime · 16/08/2024 08:38

Just to add another positive for delayed entry.
My DD 'failed' her chemistry- she got a B rather than the predicted AStar.
She was also devastated.
She got a job, resat her UCAT, prepared for her interviews and got 3 offers.
She resat her Chem and got an A star.
She has now completed her 1st year at Med school.
In hindsight - although really hard at the time seeing peers go off to uni - it has been such a positive.
She has found a great group of friends at uni. Learnt a lot of life lessons, had to endure us for another year
I know as a parent it's hard ( just gone through another disappointing result with next DD !)
It upsets me that they have such fantastic results yet they cannot celebrate due to their feelings of failure.
I remain very proud of my DDs and I am so glad she had an enforced gap year - it did her a world of good.
Also to note- I got a lot of support of these threads so thank you @mumsneedwine @Monkey2001 and the rest.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2024 08:49

@ipredictariot5 it's 💩. Wish I could give you a hug as it's hard as a parent to say right thing.
Not sure if this is of any use at all but I give it out to my students - it shows other options.

Hi all, just wanted to see what stuff your DC's have had to send off to unis.
DS has so far only been asked to do a DBS check and a GP health check. Someone mentioned MDU insurance to me...?

We are still waiting for email confirmation of his place from the uni and which accommodation he's in on campus.

mumsneedwine · 18/08/2024 18:18

@Mumofboys2006 no insurance as a student. DBS, occupational health form and accommodation. It can all wait until enrolment (they sort out any missing vaccines).

Does Southampton accommodation sent in batches as we didn’t receive anything , and I heard of other students getting accommodation.

The medical defence unions will have some kind of contact with year-1 medical students (could be a timetabled session, could be stands at freshers' fair, could be online). It is a bad idea not to sign up with one, as there is always the possibility you will need medico-legal advice at some point in your course, especially once you're on clinical placements. Some medical schools will require or very strongly encourage it. The membership for students is free: the defence unions hope they will stay with the same firm when they graduate, from which point they pay subscriptions).

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 19/08/2024 10:06

You are likely to be required to have indemnity insurance for electives (times working in other institutions, often overseas), and some placement providers might require it.

mumsneedwine · 19/08/2024 12:47

Medical schools cover your insurance.

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 19/08/2024 14:10

Medical schools cover your insurance.

Medical schools' partner trusts will have appropriate insurance in place in case a patient comes to harm. The point about medical defence organisations is that they offer medico-legal advice if a student gets into trouble for negligence, inappropriate behaviour, etc. It's up to the student to arrange membership of one of these, but it's free for students. My medical school requires students to join one of the defence organisations in year 1 and renew membership every year, and I believe this is a common requirement.

mumsneedwine · 19/08/2024 15:10

Join the BMA and they do that too. Fir free for students
