Where do we start? Is staying focussed on grades enough for now? He's aiming for Biology Maths Chemistry A levels so will have lots of other options available including biomed, biochem, sports science etc.

Any thoughts welcome, ( he's on waitlist for st John ambulance) many thanks 😊

My DD started uni absolutely sure she wanted to be a farm vet (having grown up on a farm) but is now absolutely sure she wants to do equine. She has found chatting to the vets on EMS really helpful. She is currently deliberating over whether to do an internship straight after university - there’s always something to worry about!

Oh yes the jungle sanctuary in Thailand is worth doing @mumsneedwine. Though DD found it difficult to sleep there at night without air conditioning. Plus DD & her friend went on to travel in Bali & joined a tour for a week.
Working in an equine place in Vancouver sounds a wonderful option if possible?
DD made friends with some Singaporean vets working in Australia on the trip. So she spent a day shadowing in the Vet Hospital in Melbourne to see what it was like when she was visiting family this summer. She felt quite at home, as it was so international.

@Scottandcharlene same here ! She's doing a month long externship at an equine hospital in 5th year so that should help her decide. But she really likes small animal now too.
Maybe ours will work together one day 😊 Scott and Wine vets 😂

Personally i would stay clear of veterinary and go into Medicine in a lab role/more high up role if grades allow for it.

My doctor DD loves her job. Hates the conditions and pay, but loves what she does. And looks like our young new vets are not looking at being cannon fodder, travelling and keeping their options open.

I'd recommend Medic Mentor

The first thing to bear in mind is that it is competitive, and GCSEs are looked at. Especially for Vet Med, he really needs to get 7+ across a good number of subjects, especially English/maths/science. It's very hard to get in without this, so this does need to be the first priority. Then definitely Chemistry and Biology at A-level are pretty much essential.

Work experience is really important too, but amazing work experience unfortunately won't make up for less than ideal grades.

Work experience generally needs to be recent- anything from the summer of Y10 onward should be okay, but things you do currently may not count.
