My daughter will be firming one of these two - any advice, especially from those with direct experience of the courses/ unis will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks v much

There's a thread here which may have some relevant info

Engineering at Durham? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/4987012-engineering-at-durham

@ErrolTheDragon thanks v much ☺️, I’ve been looking at that thread with interest and was hoping for some Warwick vs Durham info as well to help her decide

They’re very different types of places: Warwick is a campus, Durham’s buildings scattered over the city (although depending on the choice of college, your student might not see much of the non-university bits). Does either of those attract or repel your daughter?

Tescolife · 23/01/2024 21:48

@DrearyLane thanks!
She loved the look of Durham when she visited. She’s visiting Warwick soon to look around. Is it wrong that I’m hoping she prefers Warwick as it’s closer to home 😬. I don’t want to say anything to try and persuade her re Warwick as it’s the closer one if the course/ uni is better in Durham

They're both great courses. The campus/college Vs town thing I guess is the bigger choice so v important to visit

Tescolife · 23/01/2024 22:31

@Setyoufree thanks! We’ll see when she’s visited Warwick. Any other insights re course and happiness of students much appreciated

Not at all! But I hope she loves wherever she ends up.

Tescolife · 23/01/2024 22:34

Thanks. I’m also slightly worried about the cost of travel to a further place (Durham) but we’ll have to see which she prefers 😬

I can't remember now how accomodation works but if college provides for the whole time it would be a lot less hassle than private landlords. My knowledge is v out of date now but I looked at both for the same course 20 years ago and loved them both

I'm pretty sure nowhere except Cambridge aims to provide accommodation for the whole 3 or 4 years.

SpamhappyTootsie · 24/01/2024 08:56

Durham colleges don’t offer accomodation for the whole 3/4 years (unless there’s a medical need ) and private rents are high. Students can put their name down but the Colleges don’t allocate the few spare places until about May, which is far too late for comfort for most people. It’s a beautiful city and DS is enjoying his STEM course immensely but the scramble for somewhere to live in the first term of the previous year can be stressful.

Setyoufree · 24/01/2024 12:48

Ah that is a shame as yes, small town and large demand. Probably worth trying to find out how much rent might be at both then?

Tescolife · 24/01/2024 19:24

@Setyoufree @SpamhappyTootsie thanks. @Setyoufree did did u do engineering at Durham yourself 20 years ago? @SpamhappyTootsie glad your son is enjoying STEM at Durham now ☺️Accommodation is a big factor to consider in the choice, good point 🧐

No, went to Cambridge in the end to do general engineering there but I would have been very happy with Durham (or Warwick, just liked the college structure at Durham)

Tescolife · 24/01/2024 20:52

@Setyoufree ☺️👌

Has anyone got any direct experience of the engineering course at Warwick? Thanks 🙏🏻
