DD and I went to the Cardiff open day during Storm Babet. Was an absolutely awful journey from London to there, but at least we got seats on the train to Bristol, unlike many poor sods who had to stand.

What did you think, we know the city quite well but nothing about the university really and seeing as it's almost guaranteed to be DD's insurance I'm keen to know warts and all!!!!!

Comefromaway · 11/01/2024 12:38

Dd has only been able to visit one place (LJMU) because all the open days clashed with work. (Unable to book days off once on the rota as she was on short term performing contracts).

She has cancelled going to the open day at Cardiff Met this weekend as we have been told there will be an offer holders day next month.

WriterOfWrongs · 11/01/2024 12:44

@TheOnlyMrsW we went to view it as potentially being DD's insurance too. By that point, DD and I had viewed a lot of universities and had a clear idea of what she wanted. She's autistic, so that's relevant.

Honestly, we weren't particularly keen. The course was good, although not as good as some of the others.

The accommodation wasn't great was not near the academic buildings. Although it wasn't particularly far, our university bus got stuck in traffic both there and back. The university isn't a campus, there's main roads dividing buildings, and it's not compact.

The student union was a huge building with not much in it! That was strange.

The student disability services were nice but what they said and offered was not on a level with a lot of other universities. Specifically Sussex, which was the other option for her as insurance and which we both loved.

@SeaofTranquility Nice to see another parent of twins on here! We have already experienced the disappointment of one O rejection and are awaiting the outcome of the C interview. They both have offers from Warwick, Durham and Edinburgh and also awaiting reply's from Imperial and St Andrews. They are applying for the same subject but they would ideally prefer to be at different universities. Good luck to your twins!

TheOnlyMrsW · 11/01/2024 14:50

@WriterOfWrongs ah not ideal, I know what you mean about the union I've been there for gigs and it seemed an odd building! We're a bit stuck for insurance as DD's other offers are very similar - 3 at ABB and 1 at BBB so Cardiff would have been a no-brainer, will have to see what next month brings

Oh I'm so sorry @Cx5 to hear of the O rejection, it's so tough, the process is brutal. I hope your DC is OK, it must really sting. Warwick, Durham and Edinburgh are all utterly brilliant. One of mine has an offer from Durham and it will definitely be the firm or insurance, depending on the C outcome. We're also awaiting St A. Keep in touch as they might end up at the same uni! Will let you know of the C outcome on the 24th. I'm dreading it, quite honestly. XX

@JediKnightingale , I was wondering if you knew if there was a Reddit spreadsheet for 2023 uni entry in existence? I have tried Googline but I am not familiar with Reddit so didn't get far. I am trying to work out what typical offers might be for a particular uni course as the uni website doesn't seem to have typical offer info

DS has just received an offer for Classical Studies at Exeter. He already has one for Newcastle, so just waiting on St Andrews, Glasgow and Durham. He’s very happy!

Duckingella · 11/01/2024 17:43

DD didn't submit her application until December;she currently has offers from Lincoln and De Montfort (in Leicester).

Waiting to hear from Leicester,Loughborough and Birmingham.

Runoutofinkagain · 11/01/2024 18:18

Yes but for the previous year? I am not even sure if one exists!

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 19:09

catmom Also had the shopping comments. Had I am glad I got into Oxford because it has good shops but you won't appreciate that. And I saw the salary after 5 years is x, imagine how much shopping you could do with that. Shops are better in Oxford than Cambridge. Glad I don't have to pay for London accommodation so I can spend more on shopping.

I think the shops are much more exciting in London than in Oxford (Oxford has 2 shopping streets and Westgate), but you are definitely right regarding the financial side of things! Plus of London is that you are allowed to have a job and there are some great student job opportunities and employability rates at KCL and UCL are also very high.

catmomof3 · 11/01/2024 21:35

@lifeturnsonadime

And lots more things to do.

catmomof3 · 11/01/2024 21:39

Also to add on the comment about the salary being more if you go oxford. My daughter isn't going uni thinking about how much money she can get with her degree, she's going uni because she loves the subject she has chosen.

space99 · 11/01/2024 21:40

My DS has four offers from Lancaster, Leeds, Sheffield and UCL and is waiting to hear from Cambridge.
The Cambridge thing is a double edged sword for me as if he gets an offer, I'm really concerned that he won't achieve A star, A, A as he is not putting any effort into his studies at all. But if he doesn't get an offer, he wants to put UCL as first choice and I'm worried about the costs involved.
I would be delighted if he chose Lancaster, Leeds or Sheffield but sadly he is not particularly excited about any of those offers...sigh!

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 21:54

My DD also loves her subject. We used to live by London so she's been there a lot. London is good for employment though she has a very well paying job and enjoyable job where we are which she can continue in the holidays.

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 22:05

Its difficult Space but great he has 4 offers. Is the UCL much lower than a Cambridge offer would be?. I definitely think its best to put places you feel keen on though. Its worth checking what percentage who get offers and accept as first choice get taken in the end.

Comefromaway · 11/01/2024 22:07

Another offer for dd from Brighton. It was her 4th choice partly based on cost of living but they’ve offered her entry straight into Year 1 without a foundation year on the basis of her dance training & professional experience.

so an interesting curveball.

lifeturnsonadime · 11/01/2024 22:35

It would be lovely if this thread could revert to celebrating our wonderful children's successes rather than being competitive with each other over acceptances or rejections.

Some of us moved off of the Oxbridge thread following the Oxford decision day to move away and on from those decisions and to celebrate and get excited about other options.

That doesn't mean we're not delighted for the YP who have been successful.

Did you see the post upthread from @HenryIV about London costs. I felt it was very reassuring.

Well done DD!

I went to Sussex University. Brighton is such a fun place as a student. What course is it for? Brighton seems to offer some really interesting courses for YP. I know someone there now doing a film based course (the exact course escapes me they are in the first year and having a whale of a time).

Back in the day it was quite easy to find work in Brighton too, as well as accommodation.

Comefromaway · 11/01/2024 23:00

It’s Sports Science. She’s in her early 20s so will be a mature student.

it’s rather ironic as she didn’t do any sport at all during secondary school. Her last PE lesson was year 6! But she trained as a dancer.

Accmmodation in Brighton in 2nd & 3rd years is a nightmare to find & expensive now though. London prices without the London student loan weighting.

There is a branch of where she currently works there she could potentially transfer to.

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 23:01

It was just a jokey comment about DD being shopping obsessed but can appreciate its difficult at the moment. I have one at home who everyone expected to get to Oxbridge disabled for life by a cahms drug that went wrong so whilst I am over the moon DD has Oxford I feel for DS and anyone else who wanted Oxbridge but didn't get it. Though I would be very happy if London would be an option for DS, at the moment he can't even speak or write.

I expect Brighton has moved on in some ways since I was a student. 30 years ago people were starting to commute from London which I guess has put pressure on student housing.

Sports science as a mature student is great though, you must be so proud that she's found her thing even after high school. My daughter is sporty and I think she might want to go down the sports degree route, she's only 14 at the moment though!

Hopefully she will be able to transfer her job, that will help a lot.

I'm sure she will make the right decision, being a bit older means that she will have the maturity to weigh all of the options up.
