@listsandbudgets Politics & International Relations here.

TheOnlyMrsW · 18/01/2024 16:05

Nottingham is a great city, nice and compact centre with a friendly vibe (and lots of gigs which is our and DD's thing!), however they don't offer DD's course which she was a bit gutted about so we don't know much about the uni itself

Blushingm · 18/01/2024 17:52

Has anyone heard from Bristol for Law? DD sat her LNAT but hasn't had results yet and I'm not sure if Bristol would wait for that?

Also waiting fir Cardiff for Law - hoping for a contextual offer as she did their pathways programme

Blushingm · 18/01/2024 17:53

@PumpkinKnitter it's Law here

still radio silence from Bath and Liverpool.. wish they'd tell her ine way ir the other.

I think DD is swerving towards Nottingham. Has anyone any experience?

DS is at Nottingham and enjoying it, what would you like to know?

WriterOfWrongs · 18/01/2024 18:42

What's your DC studying at Nottingham if you don't mind saying @Hughs ?

ladsmum · 18/01/2024 18:46

I was at Nottingham in the early 1990's - loved it.
Have some friends with DCs there and DS3 also has an offer there. DS2 is in second year at NTU.
Large green campus with plenty of space, not too far from the city centre close to QMC hospital. Accommodation on campus is all catered (but self catered also available close by), accommodation older style so a bit dated but generous sized rooms although bathrooms often shared. Most students live off site in second year, reasonably affordable and close by. Plenty of nightlife cafes and shops although smaller city vibe than say Manchester.

Archaeology. He did a year of a stem subject and but realised he would be happier doing something else.

WriterOfWrongs · 18/01/2024 19:48

Thanks. Great subject!

lizkt · 18/01/2024 20:03

DD finally got offers through from Royal Holloway and Surrey today. Feels like we've been waiting ages (but probably just impatience on my part!)

listsandbudgets · 18/01/2024 20:11

@Hughs Thank you. Lots of my questions have been answered in the interim by @ladsmum

DD has been looking at the catered accommodation. We were wondering if it was worth the extra.

The Liverpool offer just came in about half an hour after my last post and it was a grade lower than we expected Grin

Hi @Blushingm, LNAT results are sent to relevant unis straight away so Bristol will already have your DD's score. She will be able to access her result next month.
My DC got an offer from Bristol for Law last year but not until March.

WombatChocolate · 18/01/2024 20:48

DS has had an offer for Durham today for his humanities subject. He’s a home, non-contextual applicant. Having been prepared for a much longer wait, he is thrilled, especially as he got a ‘no’ from Oxford last week. So now he has heard from all 5 and will be able to think about which one will be his insurance.

Feeling very grateful tonight.

Well done to your DS @WombatChocolate
I assume Durham going to be first choice then? What are the choices for reserve?

Lightsabre · 18/01/2024 21:11

Fantastic news @WombatChocolate, just the pick me up he needs.

Tulipvase · 18/01/2024 21:19

My daughter has just had an email from one of her offers, praising her personal statement. But they did actually reference parts of her statement, several in fact. Is this genuine or are they using chatbot tech or something? (Not sure that’s even possible).

Blushingm · 18/01/2024 21:40

@UniQuestions7 - thanks. Bristol is her 1st choice but if last year it took a while that puts my mind a rest a bit

mondaytosunday · 18/01/2024 21:59

Oh good news @WombatChocolate! One door closes and all that...

Revengeofthepangolins · 18/01/2024 22:20

@WombatChocolate oh many congrats to him - what great timing!

Rollergirl11 · 18/01/2024 23:04

Excellent news @WombatChocolate. He must be over the moon.

@Tulipvase is it Lancaster by any chance? DD had an email referencing her PS from them and I’ve seen some other posters mention also.

Umbilicate · 18/01/2024 23:05

@Tulipvase its AI I’m afraid. Smart move by the uni

@WombatChocolate congrats. What a relief!

That is excellent news Wombat! Congratulations to your son. Offers are going out much quicker at Durham this year - big improvements made!

Jaxx · 18/01/2024 23:42

Great news on all the offers. @WombatChocolate very jealous!

Hughs · 19/01/2024 03:46

@listsandbudgets

Pros of catered:

  • Don't have to learn to cook
  • Less budgeting to worry about / fewer choices to make
  • Some say more social
  • On campus, although s/c is across the road

Cons of catered:

  • More expensive (ie the difference is more than the cost of buying your own food)
  • Less budget flexibility
  • Food not great by some accounts
  • Less choice over what / when to eat
  • Meal times may not work for DC with other commitments eg sport
  • Don't need to learn to cook
  • Potentially paying twice for meals missed (they all seem to miss breakfast)

I would say if you have the funds, if your DC doesn't cook or doesn't like cooking and will eat anything happily, it can be a good option and gives them one less thing to worry about. DS wanted to eat what and when he liked and wanted more money for beer 🤦‍♀️
So he chose a/c and lived at Broadgate.

TheOnlyMrsW · 19/01/2024 06:11

@WombatChocolate fantastic news for your DS!!!! @Tulipvase DD got similar from Leicester but in an actual letter, I suspect AI but haven't mentioned it as she was really pleased.........even if it's not personally written I think it's still a nice touch.
