So weird thinking that in only a few months our dc will hopefully all be at med school, and some of our dc may end up friends and colleagues!

TurnLeftAtTheRoundabout · 17/02/2024 15:23

Do uea come out in batches please?

W0tnow · 17/02/2024 15:35

@TurnLeftAtTheRoundabout Apparently, yes. I read somewhere, small batches? So it might take some days/weeks to get through them all.

We are waiting on UEA also.

Great to hear more offers coming through! Well done to both @ipredictariot5 and @SparklyEyes1 young people!

My nephew did not get any interviews or offers due to low UCAT then got great A levels and did a ring round on results day and got an offer from Notts and graduated this year
also my doctor colleague’s daughter had to apply three times before getting a place
I have met a lot of young doctors who have trained abroad Bulgaria and Prague spring to mind
but as a med school interviewer I would say kids who take a gap year work in some sort of allied area, develop themselves and mature stand head and shoulders above the straight from school candidates so consider that too. I think quite of the European courses are six years whereas UK 5 to consider too

So would you not recommend going to med school straight from Year 13?

Ideally not. I wish I had a gap year instead of going at 18 but my DD won’t agree to one despite my best efforts !

My daughter has an offer now so she’s going (obviously grades dependant!) as I can’t face going through this process again 🤣

Haffdonga · 17/02/2024 19:15

Congratulations to the offer holders and seriously stay strong those who are still waiting. It's very early days. I think all my 2 dss' offers came in March and later.
I'd also agree with those saying all is not lost if you don't get the offers. Really A level grades are the only make or break aspect in the process but if you get those grades you can apply again next year or the year after or the year after that with grades in hand, more life experience and a whole lot more confidence at interview. Every year there are tales of brilliant applicants who don't get the offers only to take a year out and apply again with grades in hand and get a bunch. DS1 applied after doing another degree, travelling and bumming round the world for a while and it was SO much less stressful and easier for him than when ds2 in his A level year.

@Tripadvice I'm sorry your dd and none of her friends got interviews but it does make me wonder if they were badly advised by their school. Getting an interview (or not) is really quite predictable if you apply strategically to the med schools that best match your profile according to their different selection processes. It's quite a science and if you have someone knowledgeable in your school like @mumsneedwine it can make a massive difference to numbers who get interviews. I'd advise your dd to take a year out, have fun, get a job (in a health, care or people-related field). Put a few weeks serious effort in to maxing her UCAT grade over summer and apply again next year to the unis that fit her scores (and come back here for Mumsneedwine's wisdom). I bet your dd wouldn't regret it.

@Haffdonga I'm here if you need me 🥰

Morning all, I’ve been lurking on the TSR SGUL thread…not feeling hopeful of an offer at this stage…even though he more than meets the criteria on paper…
he’s got his first mock today so will keep it all to myself…he really doesn’t need bad news right now…

OwlMother · 19/02/2024 14:40

Ds got his final offer today from QUB. Looking at TSR I think the offers have only started being issued today. He's delighted to have four from four and given the effort he's put in for years we are just delighted for him. He had no intention of accepting this one, just wouldn't form his first choice without knowing! Nice to have the pressure off and just look forward to planning for September.

Sybill · 19/02/2024 15:16

Congrats to your DS @OwlMother , what a fantastic achievement! Very exciting to be able to move on with some more certainty and start planning for Sept. Does he know now where he wants to firm/insure? My DD’s “favourite” has moved around a bit during the process, which has been a good thing I think.

OwlMother · 19/02/2024 15:24

He's still thinking Aberdeen which has been his favourite since the open day. Although I think he wanted to go to offer days to confirm this, a few of these look like they'll clash with exams so he is rethinking this.

He has been lucky in that all the unis he has applied to seem to offer nice and early so the waiting stress has been much less than for others!

Habbibu · 19/02/2024 16:28

Congratulations, OwlMother - yeah, DD was the same about waiting

speedyhedgehog · 19/02/2024 18:07
