Anyone's DC going to University of Leeds ?

Just found out University of Leeds accomodation contract starts on Sat 16th Sept with Freshers week starting the week beginning 25th Sept so there is a 2 week settling in period until term officially starts on the 2nd Oct.

You can choose any day in the 2 week period to move in, does anyone know if most students move in around the first weekend of this period or the weekend after, in time for Freshers week ? We've got a holiday booked, coming back on the 16th as I always assumed (wrongly !) that we'd have a week before she was due at Leeds.

I'm sure you will get an answer here but there are also university of Leeds fresher Facebook groups your dd (or you) can join and also ask.

Thanks tennissquare, will look out the Facebook groups.

one of my dc has just finished their first year at Leeds and reckons that students last year moved into their accommodation towards the end of the first week, so around 21 or 22 September. Some international students might have arrived earlier than that.

We can only do a weekend so have booked a moving-in slot on Sat 23 Sept. DS thought Sat 16 Sept would be too early and there might not be many people there then.

Thanks @Outnumberedbytwo and @JBLZoom . Really helpful info. I would be happier if my DD went the second weekend to give us more time when we get back from holiday but she didn't want to be one of the last ones to arrive.

DD moved in the weekend before Freshers' - as did most others in her halls judging by the queues!

She'd already been in touch with the others in her flat through one of the FB pages so knew when others were moving in anyway (a couple were there already but most of them arrived that same weekend) - worth a try?

Violetparis · 23/08/2023 09:14

Thanks @LittleFriendSusan . Will book a slot for the second weekend.

I think the move in date depends on what halls your DC is going to. My DS has only been given the option to move in on Sat 23rd sept & he has a 3 hr slot for us yo get his stuff in.

Sounds like 23rd onwards is the main moving in time, relieved about that. Good luck to all the students starting in Leeds this year and to those already there.

One of my DTs is going to Leeds and it was last minute as he was on a waiting list for Medicine and got in - hooray. We are luckily only down the road in Harrogate so it's not far to take him but only just applied for accommodation so no idea on timescales etc!

I went to Leeds, all the uk students move in the weekend if freshers around the 20th, mainly on the Saturday.
international freshers is the week before so they all move in the week earlier to get settled and acquainted in new country.

Leeds was amazing, she’ll have the best time!

what accom is she in? My biggest advice is to try a bunch of societies, I made life long friends from mine, we’ve stayed in touch way more than my house or course mates have.

Violetparis · 23/08/2023 20:36

She's in Montague Burton, I like Leeds too. She's hoping to join a football team so will hopefully make friends there as well as on her course and halls.

My daughter is off to Leeds and we've booked her to move in on 16th as thought that would give her time to settle in before freshers?
It's that too early?
I'm trying to get her to sign up to Facebook to join the groups but shes convinced she's too young for Facebook!

Violetparis · 24/08/2023 19:57

It would be easier if there was one weekend to move in like most universities. I think the ones going the first weekend will be thinking they might be too early and the ones going the second weekend will think they're too late ! I'm sure it won't make any difference though after a couple of weeks.

My daughter is moving in on 19th as there is an event she wants to attend on 20th. Otherwise she would have moved in on 23rd. Weekend is probably more convenient for most parents, I imagine.
