I can't remember what I've said on which thread so starting my own. Please hang in there, it's slightly convoluted. My daughter is doing an Art Foundation course next year and will apply to UCAS this December/January.
She has done better than predicted, though it's no surprise to me as I thought one of her teachers was harsh. So, predicted A star (Psychology) A (Art) B (History). She got A stars for all, well above the boundary marks, plus A star for her EPQ. So far so good, but here's the dilemma.
She has always wanted to do Animation, has done stuff outside of school (short course at CSM for example), and hasn't wavered for the last couple years. For this you need a good portfolio, you do not need good grades with a few exceptions like Edinburgh, which is not on her list anyway.
But part of her now thinks with her grades maybe she should get an academic degree, as Animation is a tough field, not well paid, an unstable industry, and the future uncertain due to the advances in AI - especially as she has four to five years of study ahead first (with the added debt).
She confessed last night that while she has always been partly 'in love' with the idea of going to an old academic university (like the physical look of Oxbridge but not Oxbridge), she was never sure she was smart enough. She also, after working very very hard to get her grades, is not in love with the idea of yet more essays and exams - though that may be as they are so recent. She also does not have an alternative career plan, though is interested in Human Geography/Politics.
Now I grew up in the US and there you can apply to as many unis as you want for anything - so History at one, MFL at another, Art at yet another and so on. You apply individually so write separate personal statements.
So this is it; how can she apply to both an art school that will basically prepare her for working in an uncertain, low pay industry, but which she is passionate about (though on her terms), and also apply to an academic uni without a clear idea of what she wants to do after? It's not a case of head over heart - she finds both very appealing for different reasons, not a small part being how she sees herself as a person. I suggested applying to three art schools and two academic ones, but that doesn't really give much choice. And I don't know how quick universities are in offering to those with grades in hand - she would need to submit a portfolio to the art schools usually within a couple weeks to a month from application. And if rejected from one university can you then add another (and does this have to be before the January deadline)? Plus her Personal Statement would be quite tricky!
We have two more Open Days for art schools lined up, and now I'm wondering if we need to add others for consideration, but which ones? She hasn't looked at any academic universities yet as her results have put her in a bit of a spin.
Should she just choose one direction and go with that? She is so afraid of making the wrong choice! Has anyone's child applied to such diverse courses at the same time? And how soon do the universities offer with grades in hand? And which unis offer good Social/Policial science degrees? And what careers would that lead to? She wants to work to 'change things for the better' if she goes that route (and make a decent living doing it). Thanks for getting this far!

Also OP, LSE have a good range of Sociology / Anthropology / Politics / Human Geography related courses and various combos of all these. Also, courses like 'Media Culture and Society.' UCL offer countless combinations of courses that may interest.

mondaytosunday · 23/08/2023 20:48

@Soma shes not interested in architecture, engineering or material science, so not really suited for her I don't think, but thanks fir the link!
@visiondivisionrevision we live in London so not really interested in LSE. She has looked at the HSPS course and also Education at Cambridge (which is not necessarily for future teachers but a research based degree that looks at the social and political processes across the globe). Also has a 20% or over acceptance rate.

@mondaytosunday MFL and a few unusual courses will be about 1:3 ratio at Oxbridge. Lots of popular ones will be 1:8 or even worse. It’s a pretty long shot and what has she got to put on the ps? It’s last minute and it’s going to look like it. There are easier options.

mondaytosunday · 23/08/2023 23:16

Yes indeed @TizerorFizz and she's not set on anything as yet. Just exploring options.

What about interdisciplinary futures at Edinburgh. Ticks the nice old building bit. There are various paths including creative and social research (might even be able to do a few animation modules).

@mondaytosunday Edinburgh College of Art it's a very lovely old building with some more modern extensions
Just to reiterate, the only animator I know who has a permanent studio based job works for a games company. I don't know any traditional 2D animators in that kind of set up.
The absolutely best traditional animation courses are in France, we've had interns from them and they are a class above British animation students.
Not that I was able to persuade my own artistic children to choose something sensible, DS3 is about to start a Fashion BA!

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2023 13:38

Scotland is too far. With her MS I think the limit she's comfortable with is three hours, she wants to be able to come home for the odd weekend - her dad passed away when she was small and her brother has moved out already and we are very close.
@Wbeezer yea she was thinking (before all this) about France. Gobelins does it's masters in English and do summer courses. They do have a more prolific 2D environment there. All this she has considered.

Also, re-Cambridge, just wanted to mention, as she has three A stars in hand - when DC applied a few years ago, anyone with three A stars achieved was guaranteed an interview (for most humanities and divide sciences, including HSPS). So (assuming this policy still applies) she would be guaranteed an interview at least. They are also very keen on EPQ these days. If she chose a college that has a 'general interview' and a 'subject interview', the general interview may well discuss the EPQ quite a lot. Is her EPQ be relevant to HSPS in any way, or is it about animation?

visiondivisionrevision · 25/08/2023 11:15

Social sciences (don't know where divide sciences came from)!

ChimneyPot · 25/08/2023 12:07

I am guessing that if Edinburgh is too far away Providence Rhode Island is definitely too far.
The Brown/RISD combined degree would be perfect for her.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2023 13:32

@ChimneyPot I grew up in Boston and applied to RISD (did not get in but went to Parsons in NY) and my sister went to Brown. The fees would kill me!
@visiondivisionrevision she got a perfect score on her EPQ which was a magazine she designed, illustrated and produced - she started a club open to all in senior school to contribute. She could spin that to creating a vehicle for students to express themselves and write about what interests/concerns them. Articles ranged from how North Korea handled the Covid crisis, the restrictions of female education in the Middle East and the issues with increasing use of AI (as well as lighter material). She did three issues in total. Her weakness is political knowledge but she's at the library now with a list of books to take out! She's listened to a few podcasts too.

@mondaytosunday DD got a place at Parsons NY 10 years ago. The fees were eye watering (never mind living costs) and although she got a small scholarship, we decided here was a better bet! She did an internship in NY instead.

ChimneyPot · 25/08/2023 14:52

@mondaytosundayBrown is 100% needs met to all admitted students, with no loans all bursaries. Their needs assessment is very generous. It even includes flights home.
If your DD has a US passport through you then they would also be needs blind, that is they would not know whether or not she needed any aid before accepting her.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2023 15:04

I've only heard of a first year scholarship for international students. I am British so is she.
Anyway she has no interest in going to uni in America, though she is interested in a term or whatever study abroad, so at other unis will be looking at four year programs.

OP posts:
visiondivisionrevision · 25/08/2023 16:40

mondaytosunday - yes, she could definitely work her EPQ into the PS then if she did decide to apply for HSPS. She could also talk about art / media as an expression of cultural identity / marginalisation / revolution.
