Hi all. I thought I’d make a new thread as the countdown one is filling up.
Results day is here and I’m sure we will all value each others support, today and for the next stage of their journeys.

Oof I'm so glad we got the uni acceptance before the grades @EmmaStone I can only imagine what a rollercoaster you've both been on this morning.

Dort smashed it. 3 x A plus A in EPQ. English and creative writing at UEA confirmed. I'm delighted for her.

My daughter is going to uea too. She can't wait. Lovely uni

Hellohah · 17/08/2023 10:28

DS didn't do well. Ended up with BCD.
The B was 1 mark off an A. The C was 2 marks off a B. God knows about the D, he didn't get marks for them.

Just being there for him today, said we can sulk all day and then we'll revisit early next week to talk about what happens now. He was hoping to apply to uni next year with grades, but doesn't want to go anywhere with those.

I'll research options this afternoon and tomorrow.

Not sure he'd want to do another year of college, or if that's even allowed, but he knows where he went wrong (zero revision, he didn't even do bloody homework for 18 months) so knows what he'd have to do to improve those grades.

Does anyone know what happens if he chooses to resit? I'll give the college a call at some point, but imagine they're busy today with sorting out university places for those that applied.

DD is on her way to her firm choice at Durham, but is another with surprising grades. Predicted A star A star A, ended up with A Star BB (needed AAB). Her favourite and best subject dropped from A* to B. Bit traumatic as she got her grades first, shook her head 'it's not good'. Then checked UCAS and couldn't believe her acceptance. Burst into tears.

Very subdued scenes at her (v academic indie) school. However, all her friends have got into their firms from what she's heard so far.

Congratulations to her for getting in. I think the situation at her school seems to reflect the national picture?

Hopefully, in the long run, she can be proud of her results given the wider context?

With 2 subjects so close to the grade boundaries, it may be worth investigating reviews/appeals with the exam boards. Worth speaking to his college about this. ABD looks a lot better overall.

It is possible to do another year and resit- there's funding for students to stay in education up to 19. Depending on the college, he'd likely need to be a full time student, but they may be able to offer him options if he doesn't want to do the D subject again? Alternatively, he could resit one subject as a private candidate, but there are expenses involved in this.

I'd definitely give the college a call this afternoon, as there may be no-one in tomorrow, and next week they'll be looking at sorting out places for incoming students. At least find out whether the option to resit is on the table, and what they think about the ones near the grade boundaries?

LlynTegid · 17/08/2023 10:32

Congratulations to all those who have achieved the grades and places that they sought.

Especially as for many it was their first experience of sitting national exams, given the incompetence of this government in 2020 and 2021. I have no idea how I would have managed if A levels had been my first such exams and not had previous experience of a national exam.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 17/08/2023 10:33

My dd has accepted a place on a foundation year for her subject. She knew it was touch and go with Maths as she has struggled for last two years. She got a U which would have been one mark off a D using last year's grade boundaries. She also dropped two whole grades in her psychology a level and was disappointed with that as she had worked hard and was pushing for an A.

Anyways, here we are. She is going to uni and there will come a day where none of this matters, but that day is not today

I mentioned about reviewing his papers, but he's in such a glum mood he doesn't want to talk about it. He's so annoyed with himself, he thinks they'll take marks off him.

I'll pop out and give the college a call, I don't want to do it with him. Didn't think it'd hit him so hard to be honest. Funny old world.

Thanks for responding

Darkbutstarrynight · 17/08/2023 10:40

DS not happy as although he got A star, A, A and a B, was 5 marks off an A with the B. School are asking for a priority remark, and trying to get through to LSE to see if they'll hold, otherwise he'll be off to his insurance....

SB1971 · 17/08/2023 10:40

Still no results here despite others getting theirs from her college…
I have called-they said call back at midday if she still hasn’t received her mail.

Netcam · 17/08/2023 08:38

So proud of my son. He is dyslexic and didn't really learn to read fluently until he was 11. He was home educated until the end of his GCSEs and then went to our local school 6th form, his first time in formal education, to study for 4 A levels. I am so proud of him. He got Maths A, Further Maths A, Physics A*, Computer Science A. So he's going to Durham university to study Maths.

Amazing, we’ll done to him!

Schum · 17/08/2023 10:40

My DS got CCD when he was hoping for ABC or BCD. He doesn’t know his results yet as he wants to collect them in person in his lunch break from work but I can see them on his college website. He’s going to be gutted, especially about his C in maths as he really thought he’d done ok. Luckily no Uni place to worry about as he’s having a year off and then applying for an apprenticeship - his grades are still ok for that but I’m so sad for him, he’s going to be so disappointed.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 17/08/2023 10:41

4 A stars for ds, A star in EPQ and 2 in STEP. Off to Imperial. No reductions in grades for entry there as far as I know. Pure joy here!

That’s terrible, sorry

Some are saying results went to junk folder

MrsCarson · 17/08/2023 10:43

Dd is so disappointed with her results, so much so she went onto UCAS to check she still had her unconditional offer she was worried they'd take it back. But it's there, she's in with her chosen subject in the Uni she wants.

Darkbutstarrynight · 17/08/2023 10:43

Again unexpected spread of marks here too, predicted A stars and even had full marks in EPQ but downgraded to an A from an A star today. Fully expected at least an A, if not an A* by school today so surprised to gey a B.

TripleDaisySummer · 17/08/2023 10:43

Not sure he'd want to do another year of college, or if that's even allowed

I think there is 3 years funding post 16 - best talk to the college - they should be there today for such cases.

It was worse case option for DD1 another year at college -she's not even 18 yet that's next week - worse option in that she is keen to move on to next stage and move out but she knew many students who retaken and ended up 3 years at college.

It is possible for grades to go down as well as up if you review. Give him time to process it all, things will work out but he needs space to be disappointed.

flotsomandjetsome · 17/08/2023 10:43

DS got his firm, grades not quite what he wanted (but above offer) and 1 mark off an A* for one of his subjects, so has asked for a re-mark, not that it makes much difference as he's in.

Currently on holiday with GF, who didn't get her grades or firm and is devastated. It's so hard for them.

Anecdotally DS said he's really surprised that grades for his cohort are a generally a bit lower than expected, some unis being lenient (Oxford offer of A star, A,A accepting AAB, but Cambridge wanting full offer grades of I think Astar, A-Star, A)

Well done to all, hopefully they will all end up happy and somewhere they will thrive

Yes,checking that furiously too!
The college email address changed 3 days ago as it is merging with another one but she has logged onto the new one and I have sent a test email which arrived fine too!
All her mates had the mail to the new address, actually I may get her to check the old one now just in case

Bagpuss2022 · 17/08/2023 10:47

DS2 got distinction stars he had to do his course over 3 years as he had to start with level 1 due to no Maths GCSE just to wait to see if he passes that next week he’s re sat that too many times to count think he’s more nervous about that as needs it for his apprenticeship

Fifipop185 · 17/08/2023 10:48

This day brings back lots of painful memories. For anyone who has a DC that hasn't got the grades they wanted /needed / deserved today, please know that they will be ok, things always work out somehow.

My DD fell out of A levels badly in 2021 and was totally lost.

She took a level 2 apprenticeship in a trade which she smashed, and now works for them full time earning a decent wage and is halfway to having a deposit to buy an apartment.

She initially thought that the apprenticeship would be rubbish and very low level, but she was so wrong. It was the best thing she could have done, it built her confidence and taught her about the trade plus life and the big wife world which no uni course could do.

Sending hugs to anyone that needs one today.

HereWeGo2023 · 17/08/2023 10:49

congratulations to everyone who got in and my heart goes out to those who missed the grades.
this has been such a gruelling process where they have lived and breathed A levels for months. My heart sinks when I read of the DC who are upset.
DD got the grades for Cambridge so we are happy here, but she has gone to college with her friend as the teacher said they will pay for a priority remark on one of the friends papers as the grades were all over the place.
loads of her friends have been accepted with lower grades than the offer. The marking sounds like it was pretty harsh.

Not good news here at all. Lots of tears and now on phone to clearing. I think gap year and resits are the way to go. My heart aches for her to see her so upset.
Well done to all those who got the results needed.

this was us last year, resits, gap year and now into (original) first choice Uni, plus the extra year has really helped with maturity and being ready to go - it really isn't the end of the world. The extra also year helped explore other options and confirm it's what they really wanted.

Disconcerto · 17/08/2023 10:50

My daughter has had health problems and spent most of Dec in hospital. She has been in pain all year and also had anxiety. She has come out with four a stars and is off to Oxbridge to study maths. I am really proud of her.
