Following on from the A level support thread I thought I would create one for results day.
Hopefully you will all join me for the long nail biting wait and the big day at the end of it!

@Neversaygoodbye That's where we are with 3 essay subjects...just all seems so subjective in the marking rather than clearly correct/wrong....feels like it could go either way depending upon who and how they mark them

PettsWoodParadise · 10/08/2023 14:56

DD just told me about a conversation she had with a group of about 8 friends. They all said how likely they thought each of them would be to get their firm. They have known each other for years and all done in a supportive way. She feels so much more chilled now as they all said it would be astonishing if she didn’t meet her offer, some were honest in that chances were slim for some of them. One who did Geography is convinced she messed it up, but I think that was a horrific exam for lots of students. They have far more nerves and calm reality checking than I would have been able to take at their age!

Saying that like @Darkbutstarrynight DD doing three essay subjects it is (in my head at least) far less clear, however much faith I have in my daughter.

I completely agree about Geography, DS said it was horrific! That’s his weakest subject too which isn’t helping.

BellsaRinging · 10/08/2023 16:46

It's getting very close now isn't it? My ds is seemingly completely unconcerned and I am far more worried than him. I'm unconvinced by the (scant) amount of work he put in.
At least we have a plan B: he's having a year off anyway and has an apprenticeship sorted for that and if he doesn't make his grades I think he will pursue other options. But still, he wants a uni place and I think it will be a massive blow to his confidence if he doesn't get in...

theinnergame · 10/08/2023 16:52

I am just desperately hoping that dd gets into her firm choice - her insurance is perfectly good, and I know the pluses I can reassure her on if that's how it works out - but she'll be disappointed in herself if she doesn't get the firm choice grades. I'm only posting here so I don't go on about it in real life 😹and thankfully have a really busy Friday to Sunday to keep MY mind off it! Roll on Thursday to get past this stage!!! Good luck to everyone else in staying calm and thinking about other things until then...

stilldumdedumming · 10/08/2023 19:02

Hi all. Hold firm! Deep down we know it will be ok. But blimey I'm tense. As is ds. His course was in clearing with a grade lower than he needed (Which he was hoping was his wiggle room) until today. It's still in clearing but now the entry requirements are back up to his actual offer.

He has 15 plan Bs! In order of preference. But of course he has his heart set on the one he firmed.

Aurea · 10/08/2023 19:12

Is anyone here waiting for the grades for Edinburgh?

ono40 · 10/08/2023 19:39

Am mystified by the CIE results situation - two of three of DSs exams were CIE but it seems the school doesn’t release the results until next week alongside other A level results - does that sound right? He’s just been comparing the grade boundaries between 2019 and 2023 and some seem to have gone up slightly (not materially) which was not what I was expecting tbh.

Wishing I hadn't looked at the WIWIKAU FB pages - they seem full of people whose children have not received anywhere near their predicted grades on the CIE exams. I think we will have a few sleepless nights over the next week.😱

HappySonHappyMum · 10/08/2023 20:18

@ono40 I agree - I wish I hadn't looked either. No-one seems to have got anywhere near there grades, they're all waiting for the outcome of the rest of the A level grades next week to secure firmed Uni places or not. Really feeling the pressure now. Luckily I'm quite busy with work at the moment. I've planned to take next Thursday and Friday off to do fun, celebratory things with my DD. I don't want to spend those two days helping her with Clearing!

yoyo1234 · 10/08/2023 20:23

@Aurea is your DS in his firm choice ?

This is triggering memories of my own A-level results day where I breezed into school expecting 3As and was gobsmacked to receive BBC (even though I had done very little work and frankly deserved way less). It was a definite life-changing moment for me but has left me hyper-sensitive about results. DS1 did A-levels in 2017, the golden era of unconditional offers, and so we were a little more relaxed

Aurea · 10/08/2023 20:36

@yoyo1234

Yes, my DS's offer at Edinburgh Uni is confirmed as it was an unconditional offer (Scottish student).

I was wondering if there were any other Edinburgh mumsnetters here?

yoyo1234 · 10/08/2023 20:44

I'm in Scotland.

Greengeranium · 10/08/2023 21:05

I’m glad to have found this thread! Dd waiting and hoping. She’ll need AAA for her preferred university, but her insurance is CCC. We’re in Wales, so a little less pressure as AS results count as well.

Bigfatsquirrel · 10/08/2023 23:08

Waiting here aswell. DC has deferred so immediate pressure is off. May look at reapplying depending on grades as has changed mind about firm. It didn't all go to plan during exams so will wait and see what next Thursday brings. Feeling nervous.

Gardensaremyworld · 11/08/2023 05:50

Aurea · 10/08/2023 19:12

Is anyone here waiting for the grades for Edinburgh?

Yes @Aurea my younger daughter has Edinburgh as her insurance so she’s waiting too (plus another Scots uni as her firm)

We live in Scotland but she sat A levels so sadly no unconditionals

Roll on the 17th- the waiting is horrible I agree. I’m trying to keep busy until then (which is easier said than done)

Good luck all

Travelban · 11/08/2023 07:27

Anxiety is higher here now as well. We are away for the weekend so will have some distraction from it, but next week bound to be hard. Expecting the worse so have some options lined up but still... dreading it!!

HereWeGo2023 · 11/08/2023 07:47

@NotDonna re the clearing app. I asked DD and she said she saw it advertised somewhere but hasn’t looked any further. So it’s probably not a real thing.
i woke up at 4 this morning and couldn’t sleep for worrying about her not getting her firm.
DD was originally happy when she got her offer that the A star wasn’t specified for the subject she wants to study, but she is just worried she didn’t ‘shine’ enough for it to come from anywhere.
she’s gone from wanting results day to never come around, to just wanting it done
All of us on this board are just living in limbo. The results are decided but we have to sit and wait. It’s horrible!

I'm English (although lived in Scotland for 25 years) and my DCs were born in Scotland so I thought I would give my appraisal of the difference between the two exam systems.

In Scotland, you start school 6 months later and you also finish school six months earlier so you receive a year less in education. You attend primary school from age 5 to age 12, then secondary school up to age 18. There are no sixth form colleges and you generally attend your nearest school.

In fourth year of secondary school at age 15, you take Nat 5 exams which are roughly GCSE level (or Nat 4 for the less able). Many schools only offer six subjects which is far fewer than the number of GCSE offered, however the pupils tend to be a year younger than their English counterparts. This means that pupils choose only four subjects, aside from maths and English which I feel is very early to specialise. They can, however, pick up subjects they have dropped in later years.

The next year is Higher year (fifth year) which is the most important year in Scotland. Able pupils will take five highers at once; and maths and English are almost compulsory. You then have a free choice of another three subjects. Highers are considered slightly harder than AS levels (in UCAS pts)

The gold standard for university entry in Scotland is 5As at higher (there are no A stars). Around 2500 pupils achieve this in a typical year. For popular courses, if a student achieves these grades, they are likely to receive an unconditional offer (many less popular courses have lower grade requirements).

Some students will go to university at this stage, but they would only be 16/17 years old so many stay on at school for another year (sixth year).

In sixth year, students can pick up subjects they have previously dropped and take extra Nat 5s, Highers or move on to advanced highers. Classes contain mixed ages so you could have fifteen year olds working alongside 18 year olds taking the same subject and exam level.

Advanced highers are the most difficult exams in schools in Scotland and an A grade in these attracts the same UCAS points as an A star at A level. Most students will take one or two advanced highers alongside extra Highers in subjects they dropped earlier on, but the most able can take up to four advanced highers.

If students then apply for uni in sixth year, they already have the achieved higher grades to enable them to apply to Scottish unis and receive any potential unconditional offers.

In summary, I think the Scottish exams are high stress due to three years of consecutive exams, but conversely the last year tends to be the least stressful if students have received a good selection of higher results in fifth year.

Many schools offer very limited advanced higher options: Highland schools may only offer six subjects at advanced higher level for example, so many students will just study highers as their top level.

Both my DC have gone on to study subjects which they haven't learn at school: law and computer science. Law is not taught in Scottish schools and our school has no computer science teacher.

Sorry this has gone on longer than I intended. 😊

NotDonna · 11/08/2023 08:30

Thank you for this! had no clue how the Scottish system works or understanding of what ‘highers’ are. But now I do!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 11/08/2023 08:33

I just wish it were all over! Ds definitely doesn't want to take a gap year, although DP and I think that would be fine. We're really not sure he chose the right insurance uni. Wish he had put somewhere else down. If he doesn't get his firm, I'm not sure it would be worth calling his 'desired insurance' since their offer didn't make his final two and they are highly competitive. It possibly wouldn't do any harm. It feels like Clearing doesn't really come in to play with the courses which are quite in demand and very highly ranked.
His firm is also dependent on STEP. We're told STEP results are communicated about half an hour or an hour later than A Level results. Does anyone know what UCAS will say when he logs on at 8? i.e. might it say nothing until STEP is released? All questions will be answered in a week!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 11/08/2023 08:34

p.s @Aurea and @yoyo1234 we're also in Scotland, but ds has followed the English education system.

Tree543 · 11/08/2023 08:52

Getting nervous here too. Ds applied for Comp Sci which is very competitive. His firm that he really wants is A star AA I'm not sure he will get that. His insurance is AAB but like pp not sure he wants to wants to go there. We have looked into clearng but not a huge amount there moment and probably won't be, I'm trying to encourage him to have a plan B while saying I'm sure plan A is the most likely.

I'm not an expert in that mine didn't do STEP but I think from their friends' experience that UCAS updates first and so they will know if they have their uni offer before they know their step result.
In dd's friend's case she had an offer from Cambridge for maths but that was dependent on step and 2 X A I think (might have been one; I can't quite remember). In the event, she missed one of the A s and the step but is extremely happy at Bristol...

My eldest DS went all through the Scottish system (first cohort of CfE) and went to Edinburgh in 2016, did an MEng so was there for 5 years. We moved south in 2017 but it was an easy up-and-down journey with EasyJet. Got 5 As at Higher and got an unconditional from Edinburgh, and went on to do well in AHs.

Youngest DS applied to Edinburgh for CS but didn’t get an offer (although he should have got flags due to our postcode and state school). He’s a Feb birthday and we didn’t defer, so if we’d stayed in Scotland (we moved part way through S1) he would have been doing Nat 5s at 15 and Highers at 16. As it was he essentially went back a year, going into Yr 7 and so doing A levels at 18.

I’m not unhappy about DS2 not getting the Edinburgh offer - it would have been another £20 -25k of costs for one thing - and it’s a long way away if there’s a bit of a wobble.

The Scottish system is so much better - applying with grades in hand so there’s a strong chance of getting unconditional offers.

DS2 needs A star A A or A star A star B for his firm, but he’s still swithering about a gap year so we’re not feeling the pressure quite so much I think - if he doesn’t get the grades then gap year it is anyway.
