Any thoughts on this please? DS isn't too great at maths and has not done A level maths (has done core maths though)

I don't know on that one sorry. Does he know how many student were offered places without taking A'Level Maths this year?

Can't comment on course content but Cardiff is nice and it's quite cheap

Is cardiff uni accommodation cheap? The rental market is insane at the moment

Cardiff has the better reputation and would be more recognised internationally.

But that doesn't mean there aren't good reasons for your DS to choose Reading.

Cardiff say that Core Maths may be accepted instead of GCSE Maths.

I read this as they may accept it but they may not. I think he needs to talk to the admissions office before putting this one down as an option but I'm happy to be corrected Wink

How interesting - those were both on my son's shortlist as his top two. He is off to Cardiff this September (already has his grades). What clinched it were a couple of things. Firstly they assume no A Level maths and teach the maths required at each stage of the course when needed. They have a fabulous new building for CS with great facilities. We were impressed by a number of the teaching staff at open days and at an offer holder day. Cardiff is a great city. It's Russell Group and like it or not, that opens more doors

That said we were very impressed with Reading and the Times Good Uni Guide ranked it similarly to Cardiff for CS - so it really is personal preference. Visit both

My ds was accepted without A level maths (he has core maths AS level though). His A levels were Biology, Chemistry and Psychology

Newcastle also accepts entrants into CS without A'Level Maths - just need GCSE grade B/6

Ok, Cardiff is asking for ABB (and to include core maths) and Reading BBB if he firms with them.

DS is going for Reading (but I preferred Cardiff) he is taking a year out so has asked for deferred entry.
