Unis where no public transport required

Anyone know of any universities where you don’t need to use public transport - even when ‘living out’ in years 2&3? DS was a bit put off by Southampton as buses required to get to campus (even in 1st year).

I went to Durham and Nottingham and walked everywhere in my years at both.

SupportingArtist · 22/05/2023 15:02

Strathclyde. Glasgow.

boys3 · 22/05/2023 15:02

Aberystwyth. Presumably also St Andrews, unless having to live in Dundee

GayPareeee · 22/05/2023 15:02

What subject for?

Redannie118 · 22/05/2023 15:03

Newcastle

instantpotnoodle · 22/05/2023 15:04

Sheffield

Apart from the obvious question - What's the issue with using public transport? (which may have a bearing on other aspects of a given university) - one of the main 'villages' at Southampton is only a few minutes up the road from the Highfield campus and there is quite a bit of student type post 1st year rental accommodation in the vicinity, as well. Or would your DC be fully based at one of the other sites?

AlligatorPsychopath · 22/05/2023 15:05

Get a bike, then public transport is never required?
Oxbridge. Any small city uni (Exeter, Bath, &c.) I'm doing a masters at Exeter and walk everywhere when I'm there. Where there's a will, and so on.

RHUL

What subject for?

Business with Spanish probably - although DS keeps chopping and changing! Definitely not science/STEM

Newcastle & Northumbria unis both have their main campuses in the city centre of Newcastle

Blair31 · 22/05/2023 15:10

@boys3 Aber would be lovely but I couldn’t cope with the long drive!

This is great - Newcastle, Sheffield, Exeter, Bath added to the list to investigate. Already got Nottingham down for a visit.

DS wants to go somewhere where everything walkable coz his friends brother is at Swansea and finds commuting between the two campuses a mare (bus takes up to an hour sometimes)

Lots of student housing is in walking distance of Manchester Uni

GayPareeee · 22/05/2023 15:16

Nottingham Trent would work, especially if living in Forest Fields/Meadows as walkable to/fro campus.

Lampeter (trinity st david's) offers on site accommodation for the whole degree BUT it's hours and hours on public transport to get to there (from London at least) so it's roundabouts and swings!

Kent at Canterbury?

Yes if he did business he'd be at Bay. Lovely campus though

TwoBlueFish · 22/05/2023 15:17

Sheffield, my son is doing international business management but it really depends on how far he minds walking. My son walks everywhere in Sheffield, main student village for 1st years is about a 25 minute walk to Uni but there are city centre halls as well. Lots of 2nd year+ accommodation within walking distance.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/05/2023 15:19

There's one set of halls in bus distance at Hull but the majority of student houses are a stone's throw from the university.

fortyfifty · 22/05/2023 15:19

Not Bath. The majority of second year student housing and even some.first year uni accommodation is a bus ride away.

Beamur · 22/05/2023 15:19

DSS went to Nottingham. Lived near the uni the first 2 years and slightly further out last 2

Cyantist · 22/05/2023 15:20

Leeds?
The main student housing areas are a very short walk from campus, and are especially close to the business school.
Birmingham student housing areas are mainly walking distance to campus as well

Blair31 · 22/05/2023 15:20

@twobluefish 25 min walk would be fine 👍

Oh. Crossing off the list then!

If he's able-bodied, York. It's a campus university but there are lots of student house lets within a 15-30 minute walk of Heslington West (Heslington East is a little further out).

Echo PPs re Newcastle or Northumbria; both are mostly city centre-based (there is the odd subject based at an out-of-town campus but very much the minority) and it's a small city with a fair amount of student accommodation.
