Unis where no public transport required

Anyone know of any universities where you don’t need to use public transport - even when ‘living out’ in years 2&3? DS was a bit put off by Southampton as buses required to get to campus (even in 1st year).

I guess it depends on your definition of walkable! There's student halls near me (I've moved back to St Pauls) and it's 20-25 mins to Wills Memorial Building and the other uni buildings around there. Most friends lived around 30 mins walk away in Clifton. I had a friend who had a car and she was roundly mocked!

My kids and their friends take the bus from Stoke bishop to and from lectures. And on the way back it’s an uphill walk I would definitely not want to do daily! You must be super-fit!

Walks are not just about the distance. It’s the incline too!

It's less than 1.5 miles from Osborne Road (and surrounding streets full of student house shares) to the university, and under 2 miles from Byker!

Fair enough but I think as a previous poster said it really depends on what you consider walkable.

I think if it's 2 miles in the dark and it's raining I'd rather hop on the metro but I guess younger poorer students just walk!! 😂

Lots of student housing is in walking distance of Manchester Uni

I was just about to say this - most people live Fallowfield ish which is walking distance.

CaptainBatEars · 23/05/2023 19:23

@ReviewingTheSituation, yes, that was the one! It has indeed been pulled down now, I think because of issues with asbestos 😱Shame the university couldn't sell chunks of it as souvenirs like the Berlin Wall. Happy days indeed!

PS apparently Connaught Bar is the only one still standing. Monte and Stoneham bars went ages ago, shame

EwwSprouts · 23/05/2023 21:26

Durham. DS walks everywhere.

@TipsySquirrel I went to Hull. First year accommodation is a bus ride away but it’s only about 25 minutes Those halls have all gone now. They've built some high rise on campus.

CardiffMom · 24/05/2023 19:34

Cardiff. The student area (Cathays) is literally on top of the university and within fifteen minutes walk of the main city centre. Don't think DD has taken a bus the entire time she's been there.

Needmoresleep · 25/05/2023 00:02

DS never needed any at LSE. His first year hall was about 10 minutes walk away. Then he shared a ex council flat with friends which was a similar distance. Public transport in London is excellent and there are lots of bike lanes.

Hattifattene · 25/05/2023 00:10

Oxbridge UEA Nottingham Surrey Sheffield

Ones that need public transport
Bath unless very fit as uni on a steep hill
Warwick
Lancaster
London

stargirl1701 · 25/05/2023 00:14

Stirling.

Catchasingmewithspiders · 25/05/2023 00:18

Aston Uni

Right in the centre of Birmingham, and there is accomodation nearby for the second and third year.

Also depends how much he likes walking. I used to live in Erdington and walk onto Birmingham for uni and out to Sutton Coldfield for my retail job so I liked walking at lot 😁

Jellycatbat20 · 25/05/2023 01:23

Another vote for Newcastle or Northumbria, live near a Metro station and you'll be converted to public transport as a concept (and lots of student accommodation is near Metro stations). Plus the whole city centre is only about a mile and a bit square so very walkable. Unless you're studying agriculture in which case you'd be in the wilds of Northumberland but that's not the case for you so definitely worth investigating. Cost of living is pretty much the lowest in England as well.

Stoneham - was that the tower block? I think it's been taken down now? I was in the not-posh part of Connaught, but my friends were in Monte, so we used to meet outside there and walk up to campus. Ahhhh. Happy days.

I was also in Stoneham! 4th floor, 1990s.

Iliketulips · 26/05/2023 15:32

DD's just finished at Edinburgh. She didn't want to walk more than 30mins a day (as it definitely feels colder in winter there than her home town). Struggled to get a flat last year, but they found one last minute (not the only ones that struggled though). Both years she had a flat south of Edinburgh uni and it's a lovely walk through the park.

STLLAP08 · 26/05/2023 15:33

UEA Norwich

DisplayOrcha · 26/05/2023 15:41

I see people have mentioned Leicester. DMU is much better for accessibility to campus and town centre but it will get shit on here cos it’s a poly.

nicknamehelp · 26/05/2023 15:44

Lincoln

Lovetotravel123 · 26/05/2023 15:53

Cardiff! It definitely used to offer Business and Languages together

lakesummer · 26/05/2023 16:18

Another vote for York.

Melstarrynight · 26/05/2023 16:22

I haven't rtft so not sure if anyone has mentioned Reading. Most student accommodation is walkable and the main campus is fairly compact.

mushroom3 · 26/05/2023 16:36

Newcastle and Swansea

SingingGoldfinch · 26/05/2023 16:37

Might've already been mentioned but University of Kent - the campus is on a hill above the city but I spent 3 very happy years there (living on and off campus) and only used the bus very occasionally.

watchingthesnowfall · 26/05/2023 17:14

I went to Bristol and walked everywhere, including from Stoke Bishop in the first year. Occasionally got the bus if it was tipping with rain, but mostly walked, as did the majority of my friends. After the first year, I lived in Clifton and walked too. Good exercise!

WombatChocolate · 26/05/2023 17:21

Def not Warwick.

grafittiartist · 26/05/2023 17:29

York St John's- right in the middle of York

Fandabedodgy · 26/05/2023 17:31
