DD did Kaplan back in the day but they pulled out of law training. Yes, BPP do have possibilities for volunteering too. Getting something relevant is useful.

jano69 · 15/06/2024 15:58

First time posting in a while. Always worried my familiy will recognise me on MN as I know they don't approve. Sorry to hear you were identified IRL and had to change your username @Truetoself. DD is enjoying her last few weeks in Durham and we're looking forward to seeing her graduate in 10 days time. I guess her degree classification will be confirmed some time in the next few days. She comes home briefly in July but is then off travelling in Thailand for summer before starting her graduate job at one of the Big 4 this autumn. She's really enjoyed her uni days and sad it's coming to an end. She's looking forward to earning a salary, so are we! We're finally having our extension built as there'll be 4 of us living in the house soon and we need the extra space. I've also started a new job so there's a lot going on lately. Quite stressful to say the least. x

AvocadoPlant · 18/06/2024 14:27

Hi, might be a silly question but DD has me doubting myself! Exeter uni History - is this a BA Hons degree? Or a BA degree?

BenchOfCompany · 18/06/2024 15:15

@AvocadoPlant Ds has just had his result, he got honours which means he passed every module. This is computer science though at Durham so BSc Hons.

So drum roll, he got a 2:1 which we are thrilled with considering the group project in second year where he and one other student out of a group of 6 basically worked hard but the others who admitted they didn't care about their grade they were just in the UK for the experience did fuck all and tanked Ds's grade down (and the other student) as the group are marked as a whole. Although some adjustment it left a very bitter taste in Ds's mouth.

But he is off to London next week for an induction for his new graduate job which starts mid July so no summer off but he is eager to start working and banking the money for a house deposit.

@Jan069 congratulations on the new job for you and the grad job for your DD. Good luck with the extension.

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav lovely to hear your update too, and best of luck to your DD.

AvocadoPlant · 18/06/2024 16:39

@BenchOfCompany congratulations to your DS, on both his degree and his new role.
I have just checked DDs transcript and it clearly states it IS an Honours degree so apologies for the brain freeze moment. DD had me doubting myself!
DD also got her results and degree classification today and has done incredibly well, aced her results and her dissertation has blown us away and is reflected in the final mark, so all very happy here today. 😊

Jng1 · 20/06/2024 20:42

DS just got his results too this week - a First! Yay!
He sent me the email with a transcript of his results and he got >70% (therefore a first) in every single module over the three years.
Blimey.
This is the dyslexic son who we worried about getting into Sixth Form when he was 15...
Sorry, but I am just so unbelievably happy and proud 😊

Jng1 · 21/06/2024 07:49

@BenchOfCompany Congrats to your DS! These group projects with their potential to downgrade a student’s overall mark really need to be stopped. My older DS had exactly the same thing in Computer Science at another university and it’s just so stressful.

BenchOfCompany · 21/06/2024 08:05

@Jng1 Huge congratulations to your son, a first is just brilliant. Don't apologise, it sounds like he has overcome a lot to get his first.

Re group projects, you see it all the time on here when people say their child wants to take drama GCSE and the advice is that the group element can tank your personal grade. Ds's grade for the group project was "adjusted" but by a pathetic amount because they don't like bumping you into the next degree classification despite them having oversight of the whole thing so they could see from week 2 that some students weren't completing the tasks they were assigned meaning the work couldn't progress unless one of the two students actually working took that task on too. It was all documented and no one was reading them the riot act.

Ds had no say on who was in the group, he had never met any of them before that task and they just didn't give a shit about it. As long as they passed and got their degree they were just here for the UK experience. Ds was the only domestic student in that group and he is still mates with the one other international student who did care and who did work. They became study buddies all through second and final year.

He is just glad it is all over and behind him now. He did laugh that the student survey comes out before you get your degree classification. It is meant to be anonymous but you are logged in on the system so that worried him.

Longtimenewsee · 21/06/2024 14:07

Congratulations to the ‘other path’ graduates 🥳

Truetoself · 25/06/2024 11:45

Congrats to all the graduates and their proud parents.
@Xenia and @TizerorFizz thanks for the advice as always.
I am going to choose to be laid back. I have been reading and you don't actually need a TC to qualify as a lawyer and even relevant voluntary experience counts. So I am choosing to think where there is a will, there is a way and DS should be able to find his path ..... (could also be thought of as burying my head in the sand)

KnittedCardi · 25/06/2024 12:11

Hi all. We've just come back from family hols in Sardinia. Bloody love it there, we did bring the good weather back though.... Your're welcome 😂

So DD got her first, results came through while we were away, so Oxford it is. She was so stressed waiting, but we did then have big celebrations in the bar that night.

She is on her way back to Exeter as we speak, final time down the A303. We will go down for graduation in three weeks time, and then that's it. Onwards and upwards.

Congratulations to all the group DC's, on their results, their jobs, their aspirations. Well done all.

bendmeoverbackwards · 25/06/2024 13:06

Hello everyone 👋🏼 Lovely to read everyone’s news and well done to dc for securing jobs or Masters 👏

Cant believe they have finished! Seems like 5 mins away that dd was sobbing after being rejected from Oxford. But she’s had such a great time at Bristol, couldn’t have asked for more.

Dh and I went to see her perform in a play (Antigone) a few weeks ago, her last drama performance after many. Then on Saturday we went to help her pack up to come home. She was alone in the house for the last few days and she said it felt like an episode of a TV show, locking up the house and dropping her keys into the estate agent. She’s so sad to leave especially as 2 of her housemates are doing 4 year courses and staying on in the house.

As for her next step, law is still a possibility but she’s not as keen as she was. She has secured a one year paid position with a youth organisation which she has accepted. She’s not massively excited by it but the money is decent and it’s all good experience.

jano69 · 25/06/2024 17:36

All wonderful news coming through on this thread. Many congratulations to all. We are travelling up to Durham now. @Truetoself and I will both be at the same graduation ceremony tomorrow 🤣. DD was super happy to get a First too....

TizerorFizz · 25/06/2024 17:49

@Truetoself You can pay for the courses yourself. The attached is the solicitor routes. The training contract means the firm pays!

When DD did law conversion, it was big money and a gamble. You do want a job afterwards! £10,000 GDL and £19,000 barrister course. Plus living expenses. So getting someone else to pay has its benefits. I think the cost of some courses has reduced now. They were very high!

jano69 · 01/07/2024 08:21

Had a lovely graduation last week in Durham. Blessed with warm weather and blue skies. @Truetoself and I got to meet IRL for the first time outside Durham Cathedral for a secret MN meet up which was lovely. To our amazement, we discovered our surnames alphabetically followed each other and our respective DC walked as a pair down the Cathedral's nave as part of the graduation ceremony. What were the chances of that? 🤣

How is everyone else getting on?

KnittedCardi · 02/07/2024 09:47

@Jan069 How amazing that you two met.... It's a small world really.

The calm before the storm for us. Waiting for graduation and move out in two weeks time. DD just pottering about, unfortunately the plans for a couple of weeks on the beach don't seem to be on the cards this year, so they are doing other more standard things.

We will go down the day before, have a pre-graduation dinner on Sunday at the Ivy, couldn't get anywhere nice on the day itself, and then graduation on the Monday, pack our car with her possessions on Tuesday and come back, DD will bring the balance in her tiny car on Thursday, and that's it. Done.

She's trying to get a job but finding it difficult as most summer jobs have already started, or they want permanent part-time.

BenchOfCompany · 25/08/2024 16:40

Ds2 got into Warwick for Economics so we are incredibly proud and pretending that they are tears of joy rather than sadness that our baby will be leaving us in 4 weeks. Ds1 has him firmly tucked under his wing helping him figure out what food he should eat and helping him compile meal ideas. It is adorable.

Ds1 has started his job and loving it, It included a 3 day trip to London for a welcome introduction and meeting his team. He is working locally to us thank goodness and plans to save up for a few years whilst living at home. He is taking a day off to help us move Ds2 into his halls of residence as he wants to be there like Ds2 was there when we moved Ds1 in.

It feels like a lot of change but good change. I hope everyone is well and healthy and that this thread continues and we update it periodically. Thank you all for being an incredible support system to this random woman. Flowers

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 25/08/2024 23:41

@BenchOfCompany Congratulations to your DS2 on getting into Warwick and it's lovely that DS1 wants to support his brother on moving in day.

This thread has been fantastic support over the last few years and hopefully everyone will update periodically.

For me I'm at home on my own whilst DD and DH are on a trip to South America. We've had plenty of family holidays over the years and I've been away with our DD but this is the first time they have been away together. I'm getting lots of amazing photos.

More travelling for DD is on the horizon and also focusing on trying to secure a job for 2025.

BenchOfCompany · 28/08/2024 07:07

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav it all sounds wonderful. Lovely that she gets to spend one on one time with her Dad too. Best of luck to her on the job search.

Ds1 and Ds2 are thick as thieves, always have been despite being very different children. They are incredibly supportive of one another and whilst Ds1 was at uni they spoke over headsets and played games together.

Longtimenewsee · 28/08/2024 10:03

Oooh updates ! 😍
Lovely to hear @Dobbyismyabsolutefav and @BenchOfCompany that your dc are thriving.
Exploring South America -v exiting for her Dobby! and great news about your ds2 uni place too @BenchOfCompany

Dd coming to the end of summer internship. She has made new friends - that’s been nice to hear about

She’s squeezing in a holiday and looking forward to year 4 back at uni. I don’t think she has any other plans after that apart from wanting to travel for a bit

How is everyone else doing ?

Jng1 · 28/08/2024 10:29

Oh, it's lovely to hear all the updates! Well done to all the DC for their achievements and to the supportive parents in the background who have helped these young people navigate some tricky post-covid years!

Our exciting news is that DS has achieved what seemed impossible and got a place at drama school next year!😀This is his absolute dream come true as he auditioned before uni but didn't get offers from any of the places he really wanted, so decided to go to uni instead, which turned out to be the 'best decision ever' (his words).

He's just spent two weeks performing at the Edinburgh Fringe and is now back home, recovering (😂) and has a month before this next exciting stage for him.

Longtimenewsee · 28/08/2024 10:48

Gosh @Jng1 .. that’s blimming fantastic news! Well done to him! Exciting times ahead 🙂

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 28/08/2024 13:42

Thanks everyone, DD and DH are loving South America and are enjoying hanging out together.

It's lovely to hear that your boys are so close @BenchOfCompany

Well done to your DS @Jng1 what a fantastic opportunity for him.

chopc · 31/08/2024 08:16

@BenchOfCompany my DS2 will also be going to Warwick. Pleased that the uni is closer to home than Durham.
@Jng1 congratulations to your DS! My DD3 will start sixth form at ArtsEd in MT and hope to get a place for MT for higher education.
