Just to be clear: 'As a guide, spend around 60% of the space talking about your course,' refers to the uni course applying to not current.

FancyFanny · 26/09/2023 19:35

Thank you @Acinonyx2 That's useful!

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2023 10:25

@Acinonyx2 has got it on the nose - a very good guide! A mind map might also help.
Also be warned - they want it to fit in one page, so that means 4000 characters OR 47 lines whichever comes first! My daughter's is 47 lines but only 3850 characters.

Acinonyx2 · 27/09/2023 10:27

Yes - best to think in lines as you will want some paragraph breaks - think more 3500 than 4000 characters.

FancyFanny · 28/09/2023 17:53

Does anyone know if places like Goldsmiths and The Slade make early offers if you submit your application early?

Also, if they don't, do you think it puts you at a disadvantage when applying because by the time they read your personal statement it will be out of date as written now, rather than after being on the Foundation course for longer?

PhotoDad · 28/09/2023 19:16

Not a specific answer to that question, but in general, if you apply early, be certain that you've got a portfolio ready to go; things can move fast after the application is in!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 28/09/2023 19:29

Not for the Slade as I remember from DS app last year.

Hello again, everyone.
We are going to be in London for a few days 19-22 October. I'm about to start researching if there are any uni open days on (I know it's a slim chance). But, does anyone have any pointers on anything art/uni/show related that would be good to take dd to; she is interested in Fine Art, in particular drawing and oil painting.

This is open Tuesday-Friday afternoons if you want a mooch around UCL.

Thank you so much!

PhotoDad · 07/10/2023 20:53

Those look fab in being art-school related, but if you're not often in London a couple of hours in the (free) galleries is a great thing to do! National Gallery, NPG, Tate(s), etc.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 07/10/2023 20:58

I'd second the new National Potrait Gallery. Ds loved it!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 07/10/2023 21:15

Thank you. We absolutely have the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery (didn't realise there was a new one!) on our list. I'm not sure we will do the Tate. I love it and have been to the one in London and Liverpool, but it tends to be too contemporary for dd!

PhotoDad · 07/10/2023 21:26

"Tate Britain" (rather than "Tate Modern") has a lot of very good pre-twentieth century stuff. And a whole wing of JMW Turner, which always makes me very happy.😀

Acinonyx2 · 07/10/2023 21:55

@PhotoDad My dd's friend has just started ARU illustration - so year below your dd - and is loving it. Mine at Herts is just in her first proper week.

Duchessofmuchness · 07/10/2023 21:58

Second Tate Britain - not all contemporary. It's wonderful.

Good luck to DD at Herts! Will PM you about possible "small world" experiences.

Acinonyx2 · 07/10/2023 22:45

😀Have pmed back!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 07/10/2023 22:45

Ok, I didn't know Tate Britain. Thanks.

mondaytosunday · 08/10/2023 09:10

Keep us updated @Acinonyx2 - it was top of DDs list when she was going to do Animation and it would be interesting to know if it lives up to its reputation!

mondaytosunday · 16/10/2023 10:33

How's everyone getting on? Kids must be settled in and judging by other threads already looking for second year accommodation! And FADs? How are they working out?
My daughter's UCAS had gone in with only three on it currently. Had a couple meltdowns over the PS, and she said that at a subject talk at Exeter when the professor said they don't look at them felt a notable temperature drop in the room. Has also done a CV and another 'statement of intent' for the month abroad Turing work experience scheme I mentioned earlier. It's for Lisbon, not Berlin or Seville as advertised (so much for her distinction in German GCSE she was going to mention). She says slim chance as only 15 places and it's open to all, not just the 40 on her FAD course.
She's on the printing rotation now and did an etching first day which she enjoyed. Somehow her friendship group has become known as the 'chatty table', ironic considering what an introvert she is! Plus they've visited three museums now - Tate Modern last week. Getting her steps in!

PhotoDad · 16/10/2023 19:20

Good luck, @mondaytosunday, DD loves the printroom and spends a lot of time there! She is currently trying to decide whether to try for a Work Placement next year, or to press on to Year 3 and then do a Master's... she feels it would be indulgent to do both and delay graduation. I can see both sides, so no particular advice to give her (unless any of you have thoughts?)

Talking of Seville, an assignment has been to turn their trip into a storybook. Here's her spread about having her pencils etc nicked.

That's a sad but beautiful story. I love the mixture of hell and pox and then the little details about the caring gifts from her family.

Soma · 16/10/2023 23:09

@PhotoDad lovely spread. I think year long placements are highly valuable and I know a number of people who got graduate jobs that way.
