Campus universities

I know most universities have a campus of sorts but DD is looking for a traditional campus university - where all the teaching, 1st year accommodation and sport are in one place. So, by this criterion, Leicester and Leeds for example are not campus, whereas Nottingham is.

Traditional campus universities that occur to me: Nottingham, Birmingham, Exeter, Warwick, Essex, York. Do you know of any others please?

I wouldn't count Cardiff as a campus uni.

I'm there now. Definitely not!

Flowers12345 · 15/03/2023 20:17

It's already been said, but Keele 100% fits what you are looking for and the grounds are beautiful

Bobbybobbins · 15/03/2023 20:38

Sidling is absolutely gorgeous - my gparents lived nearby so we used to go for a wander.

*Stirling

I’m going to suggest Southampton, if you choose halls at the Glen Eyre Complex, or eg Highfield Hall, they’re pretty close to the main campus. And it has the benefit of being very much a campus uni but not far from the city

HandleOfBasket · 15/03/2023 20:50

@collywobble Dh insists I add "Olympic" to the swimming pool, as an Alumni this is apparently important Grin

Loughborough is definitely a campus university set in 523 acres, with cricket, tennis, squash, and an athletics centre but not just any old athletic centre but Seb Coe High Performance Athletics Centre! Wink

We visited over half term for Ds to consider following in his Father's footsteps. It honestly is a different sort of uni experience as the halls of residence have their own sports teams etc so there is a real sense of belonging to the hall. I visited Dh when he was in his final year, it was very different to the uni I went to. Very much a community feel to it and also catered is an option plus a mini supermarket on site for self catered or snacks required.

RamblingFar · 15/03/2023 20:53

Loughborough - but not all halls are on campus. I was placed off campus (but nearby) in my first year.

collywobble · 15/03/2023 20:53

@HandleOfBasket
Absolutely right . I can't speak highly enough of the place as my son is there at the moment and it's been such a different experience to that if my daughter who was in Liverpool. The whole place has a very inclusive feel to it and he's having the time of his life there without much of a need to leave campus if he doesn't want to.

familyissues12345 · 15/03/2023 20:59

Reading - ticks most of the requirements apart from sports, some are off campus (but I guess this could be the case at a lot of unis)

Otherwise all year 1 accommodation, student Union, teaching etc is on the one campus - and it's a really lovely one

QueenofLouisiana · 15/03/2023 21:00

We spent the weekend at Aberystwyth recently- everything is on their campus and the hospital is practically on there as well (oh and the national library). A full cinema, swimming pool, study centres....

UEA is very similar, but there is (very limited) accommodation in town- usually used for students not in the first year I think. Everything from GP to shops to art gallery.

HandleOfBasket · 15/03/2023 21:01

@collywobble Dh feels exactly the same way. He had the best time and I was glad to part of it over a few weekends. It is such a great uni and I am glad your son is loving it. We were pleasantly surprised by all the new additions of halls and the supermarket place plus the Purple Onion still going. He used to get pizza and burgers from there despite being fully catered! He was a Telford lad but those buildings are now Faraday and his dining hall is a martial arts centre. Telford has been moved to where Elvyn Richards used to be which has also moved. He agrees no need to leave campus, everything is there.

Lcb123 · 15/03/2023 21:03

Sussex - bonus being on outskirts of brighton

Kayjay2018 · 15/03/2023 21:04

Agree with everyone's comments on Keele. DS is there at the moment and loving it, if you go on you tube you can find the"show around" videos from when covid meant no actual visits, we found that really useful

PinaColadaBaby · 15/03/2023 21:08

Some of these unis weren't on DD's radar at all. Thanks for alerting us! Reading looks gorgeous. Looking at Keele now. Loughborough sadly doesn't offer DD's course or anything resembling it. Will get her to look at your other suggestions too (UEA, Sussex, Aberyswtyth (forgive spelling!)....

Leeds most definitely considered a campus uni. Part of sport and some accommodation is off site but that's it.

RedHelenB · 15/03/2023 21:52

Candleabra · 15/03/2023 18:57

It is. But it’s right in the centre of the city, which may not be what the OP wants

It isn't because most accomodation is at Greenbank, Liverpool is a city uni like Newcastle.

BeeandG · 15/03/2023 21:59

Nottingham is campus but depending on course there are different campuses. Jubilee campus is really close to University Park, walkable. But Sutton Bonington is further away. Saying this University Park is just great and David Ross Sports Centre is brilliant.

Winginit73 · 15/03/2023 22:05

Hull has a lovely campus and there's an accommodation guarantee for 1st years

eyeoresancerre · 15/03/2023 22:13

If she wanted further north - Stirling University in Scotland has everything on campus including shops, bars, restaurants, library, sport facilities etc.

eyeoresancerre · 15/03/2023 22:15

Sorry just read up thread and I see Stirling has already been mentioned.

CocoonofDavid · 15/03/2023 22:22

My son wanted a campus uni.

He’s now at Lancaster and loving it.

Hull was his insurance and it really was lovely when we visited.

He also had Aber on his list. Lovely place but decided not for him, but ticks the box of campus uni.

LifeOfBriony · 15/03/2023 22:37

Hull, Brunel University London

Train007 · 15/03/2023 22:40

Lancaster and Nottingham …both have beautiful grounds.

Royal Hollway - University of London. Absolutely stunning campus!

I can almost make out my old room in that picture! Lovely place but much changed since I was there, a lot of the halls have been demolished and updated when I visited recently for the first time in nearly 30 years!
