@Hopeful646 My Dd went to Leeds and did not have a car - in fact she only learned to drive in fourth year.

Placements are done in groups. She found that if it wasn’t easy to get to one by public transport, generally someone in the group had a car & was happy to offer lifts (obviously contributed to the petrol costs).

She had one a bit further out in the dales where she stayed over in hospital accommodation during the week & went back & forth by train.

@Decorhate thanks for your reply 😊

Hi ,
Are there any Leeds medicine parents that can shed light on whether a car is helpful for placement in the first year please ? I know they only go out 1/2 a day from January but wondering how far they are expected to travel . My DS is trying to decide on accommodation and whether he needs to think about parking or not . Thanks

It honestly depends where their placements are. DD's first year were the other side of Harrogate.

That said, she did the first year by train and then was extra appreciative when I gave her my little car and she had that from the start of second year. So it's definitely doable without a car first off, wherever they are placed.

She appreciates a car now as even though she's a bit closer now a lot of the time on placements, being able to drive herself (and friends on the same placement) means she can get up to an extra hour in the morning: that extra hour is either spent sleeping or working, and also means she is much more likely to make herself a proper packed lunch and so save on buying a Tesco meal deal.

She's never charged her friends for petrol but I think sometimes they buy her a drink when out, etc.

Hopeful646 · 02/05/2023 18:11

Thank you @MedicParent . Having looked at the accommodation not many have parking and even those that do have limited spaces . So think car will stay at home for the first year and maybe he'll take it in second year .

Africa2go · 02/05/2023 18:34

@Hopeful646 went to offer holder's day at Leeds last week (non-medic) and everyone we spoke to didn't get their first choice of acccommodation. We also have quite a few family friends (Leeds is v popular) where accommodation seems to have been allocated completely randomly (none of their choices) - all seemed to settle in eventually (except for one who was allocated one hall miles away). I wouldn't be banking on getting a car parking space even if he chooses accommodation based on that.

Hopeful646 · 02/05/2023 18:51

@Africa2go this seems to be the case at quite a few unis now . I'm sure it usually works out where ever they get allocated though .

That may be the case - have only heard it as usual in respect of Leeds, but it doesn't surprise me! Am sure he'll be happy wherever he ends up x

@Cratos can help a bit with accommodation. To add, Bristol seems a great city to be a student. My vet one plays against medics, socialises with them and they all seem to love the place. Yes, not cheap, but then no where seems to be these days.

Thank you very much @mumsneedwine very kind offer.
I will be in touch if he firms Bristol.

Cratos · 02/05/2023 20:23

opoponax · 01/05/2023 13:53

@Cratos. Nothing material. It was more how excited DS was about Newcastle than anything negative about Bristol. At a rational level, the courses were pretty much identical and both cities were great places to be a student and placements provided a breadth of experience. Accommodation was more straightforward at Newcastle but Bristol was only two hours from home but in the end he put all that to one side and went with his gut.

@opoponax thank you very much

Cratos · 02/05/2023 20:36

My DS started to think about what he can do work wise during his deferred year (hoping he will get the grades in August🙏) to earn some money and gain some experience. He is still working as a bank staff at the care home kitchen. He would like to do a health related job from next September. What would you recommend ? What are his options as an 18 year old college graduate? I think phlebotomist was mentioned here before or health care assistant roles. Are these achievable? We cannot think of anything else at the moment.

mumsneedwine · 02/05/2023 20:49

@Cratos yes, both achievable. Go to hospital local to you and look for bank HCA jobs and apply. Pblotomy jobs may also be there but also worth contacting blood service too. Takes a while so worth starting now.

Otherwise becoming a carer in the home or working at a day care centre for dementia. Special school TA (lots of health care involved).

NHS jobs had some interesting alternatives too. Porters, ward assistants.

If you end up at Devonshire; where my daughter was, there's actually free street parking right outside if they need it. Catered Dev was her first choice as well, and she got it 😁

Although not next to the Uni, it's a lot closer than a lot other first year student accommodation as well.

And they have chickens. And a decent chef 😁

My daughter got her first choice of Dev at Leeds. She was so happy as it was the one she had felt bonded to.

So some do get their first choice 😁 And it's a brilliant hall!

Hopeful646 · 02/05/2023 22:00

That's good to hear @MedicParent

I have accidentally made a very dark statement.

they have chickens. And a decent chef 😁

🙈

I swear that they are most definitely exclusive facts and there's absolutely no correlation between them 😆
