My DD is seriously considering accepting an offer from Bristol. It has always been her favourite and was the aspirational one of her four choices. She only just made the UCAT cutoff which was ridiculously high at 1910. Her grades at GCSE and predicted A level grades hit the mark but what I am wondering is whether she will be at a disadvantage within the Bristol cohort this year having achieved almost the lowest UCAT? Any thoughts from those with DC already doing medicine?

Scoobyblue · 30/03/2023 08:50

No she won't be at à disadvantage at all. The UCAT is a test which reflects one day and one right answer here or there will make a difference (as will a few lucky guesses so my dd tells me....!). If it's her favourite and she's got an offer, she should go for it. Congratulations to her.

Monkey2001 · 30/03/2023 08:59

@ASeagull23 until 2019 entry Bristol ignored UCAT and reviewed all PSs. I got the impression they switched to using a UCAT cut off because it was an easy, objective measure. A few lucky guesses adds 100 points to your score and there is an arbitrary element to which test you get. She will be fine!

sergeantmajormum · 30/03/2023 09:06

My daughter is at Liverpool (currently intercalating) if you have any questions. Great city and she is enjoying the course tho this year has been a welcome change of pace. Regarding placements, so far only non-commutable one is Blackpool where free accommodation is provided and for others transport costs are reimbursed.

Don't forget there are also Bristol students who'll have entered via the Gateway scheme possibly with much lower UCAT scores than your dd.
Ds says the range of students' backgrounds in his tutor group is wide (several haven't come via the 'normal' A level, UCAT route) but nobody seems to be struggling to keep up academically. UCAT scores become completely insignificant within minutes of starting.

opoponax · 30/03/2023 09:50

Congrats on the Liverpool offer @Cratos . Is that all the results in now?

@ASeagull23 I agree that your DD should absolutely go with her top choice.

DD is still on hold for Bristol and she has waitlist opt-in option for Notts. Doesn't change anything as Newcastle and Sheffield have always been her top two and she already had those offers. She could well firm/insure before Bristol make their mind up about her!

What is the advice for firm and insurance here? DD wants medicine or nothing (at the moment). The offers she has are for the same grades. Does she put her top choice in for her firm and use her fifth option as insurance just in case she doesn’t get the required grades or does she put 2 med schools in with the same grade requirements?

Peachy2005 · 30/03/2023 16:23

Both med, unless she’s happy to do the non-med option. It sounds like she wouldn’t be: would she be more likely to take a year to repeat for the grades? One or other university might have a little bit of wiggle room on results day, like accepting a slightly different grade combination. At least she’ll have 2 chances for that to happen. Hopefully it won’t arise and she’ll smash her grades 😀…good luck xx

Update - Nottingham offer for DD. She got it before going on their wait list.

Monkey2001 · 30/03/2023 07:53

Well done @Cratos ,. There are some medical schools which will accept a Y12 result as part of the offer, looks like Liverpool is one of them. Just got to make sure of the A in Chemistry, which is the one which most often lets medics down.

Thank you very much for the advice about Chemistry @Monkey2001
We are crossing our fingers.
We will give them a call to check it is not a mistake just in case.

Cratos · 30/03/2023 22:46

Dyslexicwonder · 30/03/2023 08:04

Congratulations Liverpool is a great place to live and study, shouldn't break the bank either 😀

Thank you @Dyslexicwonder that is great to know.
We are a bit worried about Bristol costs. Bristol seems to be his favourite. It is much closer to our home than Liverpool but costly.

@sergeantmajormum thank you for the offer. It is great to hear your DD is enjoying the course and the city. We might have some questions in the near future especially about accommodation. We are surprised that Liverpool has not sent an email about the offer and offer holder day.

Cratos · 30/03/2023 22:57

Congratulations @opoponax . Great news !

We heard from all the Unis now and we have to decide between Sheffield, Bristol and Liverpool. It looks like Liverpool might be in the mix due to the AA offer.
He also needs to check if Bristol and Liverpool will accept the gap year. Bristol said he needs to apply via Bristol portal.
Saying that he doesn't seem to have a plan about what he wants to do during the gap year yet. I don't know what will be more important if Bristol says no to gap year.

mumsneedwine · 31/03/2023 16:26

@Cratos we've managed Bristol & are no means rich (I'm a teacher after all 😊). Halls not that much different to lots of other places for first year and housing is cheaper if you move 20-30 minutes away. But if want to be closer then DC can work in the holidays to make up the extra. It is a fantastic Uni and my DD would not be anywhere else.

Cratos · 31/03/2023 19:27

@mumsneedwine thank you for this insight. I think he should be able to commute for half an hour. His college is not close either but I help a lot with lifts etc. It is a shame that many people get paid low salaries despite doing very important jobs for society.

Great news. Well done!

Monkey2001 · 01/04/2023 13:42

@mumsneedwine does your DD know which jobs she has for the next 2 years now? Hope the crazy process worked out OK for her.

mumsneedwine · 01/04/2023 14:56

@Monkey2001 everyone finds out that on April 13th. UKFPO are not a fast moving organisation.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 01/04/2023 22:04

DS went to Exeter offer holder day today. He's not really feeling it so think he has decided against it. No in person lectures seems to mean quite low contact hours and he still isn't sure of the split campus bit.
So it's between Birmingham and Sheffield. Offer holder days for those 2 soon.

Peachy2005 · 02/04/2023 14:31

Congrats on the recent offers and commiserations to those who’ve had bad news.

For anyone who went to the 1st Newcastle offer holder day, were there any accommodation tours or other non-medicine events being run?

And does anyone have any recommendations for must-see things in the city? Due to train/plane constraints, we only really have the morning of the offer holder day to try to get the flavour of the city…I’m trying to research bus/walking tours but a lot of tours only seem to run in summer. And which of the shopping centres is most worth a visit?

Thanks for any advice.
