How do you defer for a year?

Hi all,

Mature student here and I've been accepted onto a university course starting September however my mum has just been diagnosed with autism and I need to sort some stuff out with her like care etc and I know how slow that process can be so I was considering asking to defer until September 2024 but was unsure how to do this - I've given them everything in regards to what they need for the conditional offer but I'm not sure how to defer and was wondering if someone knew on here.

Thank you

You need to speak to them to request it, but be aware they may decline your request. It seems a drastic step though, a diagnosis would not make things any more difficult than they already were.

How does your mum’s autism diagnosis affect your life to the extent you can’t take up a uni place?

if she’s never needed care before and managed to raise children etc, how has a diagnosis changed that?

having said that I think you can defer for any reason, you need to ring them up and ask. Some are happy to, especially for currently oversubscribed courses or uni’s.

I didn't mention it in the OP because I didn't think it was relevant but I'm actually her full time carer, she has significant learning difficulties and can't make her own dinners, needs help getting changed, can't manage money etc she has carers in a couple of weeks to help take the pressure of me as I have a three month old but now she's being transferred over to the autism and learning difficulties side of social services following her diagnosis so it's kind of like starting again so I wasn't sure if it'd all be sorted by September but thank you for answering, I wasn't sure how to ask.
