Uni for Graphic Design?

Dd is considering her options for next year, after A-Levels.

Wants to do a design subject at Uni ie. Graphic Design or something that incorporates this. We’ve visited ARU (Cambridge college) for Graphic Design and UCA (Epsom college) for a degree in Advertising.

DD’s school careers officer is not useful (apparently) and I don’t really know how to guide as I didn’t do these kind of creative subjects. Is it even worth doing a degree for this or better to do an apprenticeship? She is particularly interested in product design, rather than typography side of things.

Both colleges say they help their students with finding work once they’re towards the end of their course which is great. Dd prefers Epsom so far, but I’m not convinced a degree in advertising is not going to funnel her into a very niche subject. I’ve also heard advertising as a career is very cut-throat. I’m not sure she would be cut out for this.

Anyone have any experience of these colleges or can help us consider what is best? Any info/advice much appreciated.

My niece did a Graphic Design degree at UAL - LCC in Elephant & Castle and got a great job as a graphic designer after fairly quickly.

Kingston University has a great art school inc graphic design but also product design...maybe go to an open day and ask the tutors to get a better idea of what would work for your daughter

My DD is currently loving her life at ARU/Cambridge School of Art, but it's for Illustration rather than Graphic Design.

You might want to have a look at this thread (and join in, it's very friendly)?

Another vote for Kingston Uni. A friend’s daughter has just started digital design and is loving it. She got the place through clearing as wasn’t sure what she wanted to do at application time.

I would have thought she needed to do an art foundation. Then look at ual unis….

Can vouch ARU has fantastic teaching and its a very inspiring environment to be around the Cambridge University architecture

Thank you so much for all your replies!

Will have a look at Kingston Uni and the LCC.

Thanks for the link @PhotoDad

@Ihavethisthingwithcolour I will check, but as far as I’ve seen an art foundation hasn’t been mentioned on any open days.

@jeffbezoz Good point, Cambridge is a very inspiring place!
