Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

My DS just got an offer from Manchester for Geography. He seems delighted.

WendyWebersdrugget · 06/11/2022 08:00

Hello! Can I join in? DS2 is being very cautious (slow!) with application but to be fair he is waiting to see if one of his grade predictions goes up. Wants to do social sciences and definitely looking at Manchester. Won’t apply to York because DS1 is there and it’s ‘too small’! Southampton, LSE and UCL on his list at the moment. Could all change and PS still being drafted.

NotDonna · 06/11/2022 08:38

@Era It looks to be a great course, with a good reputation and ranks fairly highly in the Business league tables. But it seems odd that the sandwich course is higher grades than the 3yr course. We haven’t come across any other universities that do that. They also said that you need to be on track for a 2:2 if you want to move from the 3yr course to the 4 with no mention of a differing grade requirement. Despite it being popular they also said during their talk at the open day that they have room for twice as many. They did say they had record numbers attending the open day so maybe they increased the grade requirements after that. Who knows. DD has emailed asking if the grade requirements on the website are correct, just incase, but I doubt they’re wrong.

Hi @WendyWebersdrugget there’s a couple of months before they have to submit so may as well wait for that increased grade. Is your DS1 enjoying York? DD2 hasn’t visited but it’s now in her 5. Pros & cons? Don’t suppose he’s studying business?
@Joshanddonna he should be delighted! That’s great news!

NotDonna · 06/11/2022 08:48

@DrMadelineMaxwell and @era I stand corrected re the AS levels. They’ve been decoupled rather than totally stopped. I don’t know of any schools who still do them so jumped incorrectly to conclusions.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 06/11/2022 08:51

DD2 has offers from Manchester, Cardiff, and Reading x2, she's just waiting on Lancaster. She's very pleased as Manchester is her No. 1, but 5 + hours away from home.

WendyWebersdrugget · 06/11/2022 09:41

@NotDonna DS1 loves York - in his second year but English and Philosophy, not business I’m afraid! Definitely the right choice for him. He’s not keen on the geese on campus but that’s literally the only negative thing I’ve heard from him!
I might get DS2 to have a look at Lancaster for Sociology. I did suggest Birmingham but whether that goes on the list remains to be seen. He is very much his own person!

WendyWebersdrugget · 06/11/2022 09:43

DS2 did AS levels last summer - dropped the 4th one and has replaced with EPQ. I’m they were helpful but more as exam practice externally marked than anything else.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/11/2022 09:45

We're in Wales so GCSEs are till letters not numbers and AS are still sat and awarded separately...dds certificate came in the post this week.

She liked the course content better in Leeds and Cardiff compared to Warwick too. Warwick seems to just teach for 2 terms and give a term of revision and exams. And they seemed to be trying to offer more modern and unusual units of study which would impact the number of exceptions that dd could receive against the required modules for the accountancy accredited bodies.

She wants a sandwich year too.

The bustle of an inner city uni suits her better than the quiet campus. Her sister is completely the opposite and liked York campus enough to stay living on site for the full 3 years of her course.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/11/2022 09:48

Oh and the separate general studies style welsh bacc (now referred to as 'skills' in her 6th form college) is pretty much compulsory and is counted as a 4th A Level by all unis except oxbridge.

KittyMcKitty · 06/11/2022 09:57

@WendyWebersdrugget my ds is doing social sciences at Manchester (Philosophy and Politics) - what swung it for him was the amount of choice they have over different modules - he’s doing a sociology module as well and there was a compulsory social anthropology one they all had to do.

they have great learning spaces some open 24 hrs a day - he was in one until 2 or 3 this morning finishing an essay - I woke up to see a text from him very happy he had it finished.

Manchester sociology looks great but dd won’t consider it as her brother is there and also she wants somewhere a bit smaller.

DS2 is just finishing his UCAS application this weekend. He's studying A level maths, chemistry and biology and wants to do the four year chemistry integrated masters, Mchem. York is favourite so far, also liked Liverpool and Nottingham. Possibly Sheffield too.

DS1 is at Nottingham studying Geography and having a fantastic time.

WendyWebersdrugget · 06/11/2022 10:18

@KittyMcKitty yes, the choice at Manchester really impressed DS2 and he’s interested in social anthropology. Good to hear it’s going well.
Well done to those with offers already - very exciting!

If your DD is looking at accountancy has she considered an apprentice. That’s what my DD1 is doing with a Big4 - 2nd year. I posted up thread about the application process. Or looked at the FlyingStart degree with PwC?

NotDonna · 06/11/2022 10:24

The FlyingStarts are at Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham, St Mary’s in London (all RG if that’s important) and Reading. PwC have bizarrely pulled their accountancy apprenticeships but EY definitely still do them, I’m less sure about Deloitte and KPMG. There’s also firms like Mazars etc.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/11/2022 10:25

Thanks...I'll pass that info into her to look into.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 06/11/2022 17:38

@KittyMcKitty She's planning on Linguistics with either English Lang. or psychology.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 06/11/2022 18:47

Really interesting to hear about the degree apprenticeships. ds has applied for one at B'ham in computing with PWC. Anyone else?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/11/2022 01:30

Late back to this - ds is hoping to study chemistry although he was considering engineering.
His school seems so slow with feedback on his personal statement - i would love him to get his form in soon. He only really wants to go to Aberdeen.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/11/2022 01:32

I'm a sociology PhD student @KittyMcKitty so if I can help at all, give me a shout.
(I lecture too but only as an associate lecturer)

Selok · 07/11/2022 15:10

@SuperLoudPoppingAction my DD was looking at microbiology and neuroscience (and also forensic science at one point) now her 3 choices are chemistry, 2 are neuroscience she decided she loves chemistry Confused

Ah thank you. Sociology is such a fascinating and important subject! She’s submitted her UCAS so we’re just crossings fingers now (she’s doing biology chemistry and psychology a levels so maybe not a typical applicant).

OP posts:
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/11/2022 15:51

My first degree was in modern languages (biology and chemistry a-levels too actually) then I did counselling.
I can think of a phd student who used post-normal science in his sociology PhD- there is a role for an understanding of natural sciences.
I think I used to get told off for bringing psychological theories into my analysis but that's what criminologists do, so i found my niche in the end!

KittyMcKitty · 07/11/2022 17:31

Big excitement here after submitting her UCAS for on Friday afternoon dd has an offer from York (ABB their standard offer).

WendyWebersdrugget · 07/11/2022 17:40

Brilliant news, @KittyMcKitty - that’s a great offer!
