New thread

OP posts:

A brand new thread could be a plan Honey Mobster - given that you haven't run out of Oxford applicants yet, would you like to start a new more reasonable thread?

DeliberatelyObtuse · 02/11/2022 19:54

FFS

Please can we get back to what this thread was about originally?

This whole Oxbridge/UCAS thing is new to us and I had found this thread really helpful

Please can we just support each other and share news?

I hope so. For those of us who have experienced a tiring day with TSA exams we could do with some support!

RedRec · 02/11/2022 20:30

What a bunfight. Most entertaining.

HewasH20 · 02/11/2022 20:34

I guess it all goes quiet now until the results come through

The TSA results used to come through the night before Oxford offers were made, not before interview. I know DD had to apply to get her mark and they don't release marks for the essay part. She was comfortably within the top 15% which definitely helped her to secure an interview, but there isn't a firm cut off point.

Your DC should hear if they are being asked to interview around 2 weeks before. DD was invited to a UNIQ interview workshop at Oxford in the October half term, but they made it clear that everyone who had been on UNIQ was invited and it wasn't linked to whether or not you would be.

Her school gave her a practice interview, but it was with someone who had studied a random subject at Brookes and bore no resemblance to her real PPE interviews. They covered everything from optimal pricing strategies for car parks, setting tax rates under a given scenario, the Kardashians and Dr Who style time travel. Nothing could really prepare you for that!
She hadn't studied any of the 3 disciplines at A level, so no background knowledge was expected.

Oh, okay that is really helpful.
Where is your DD/DS going and what kind of support do you need with that?

HoneyMobster · 02/11/2022 21:05

I think DS1 got his TSA result the night before he got his Oxford Chemistry offer - he was pretty gloomy about his prospects. It was only last year for DD but I think she got her BMAT result just before she was invited to interview. She wasn't happy with her BMAT but went on to get an interview and offer.

I'm off to have dinner with the pair of them tomorrow (at nearby conference for the day) so feel free to ask questions on Chemistry and Medicine process before then and I'll get some intelligence if it would be helpful to anyone.

DS2 is fine about how TSA today went, glad it's done I think. If his US offer comes through next week it will soften any post-TSA worries for him, although I don't see much evidence that he's worried.

Thanks for sharing.

My DS also applying for PPE. As your DD hadn't studied any of the 3 prior do you know what the tutors focused on in her interview?

Fingers crossed re interview...

HoneyMobster · 02/11/2022 21:25

Hewash will know more but my DS is applying for PPE. The general thinking seems to be that at least one essay subject plus maths is desirable.

DS is taking Economics, Chemistry, Latin and Maths. Latin may prove to be useful as it's led him into some interesting Greek philosophers which he's delved into.

Letitgoagain · 02/11/2022 21:29

I've been following the thread but posting for the first time. DS wanting to do Maths and Physics here. He did the MAT today as required for Imperial (not applying for Oxford). He said he found the paper much harder then the practice papers. Did any of your DC do MAT and how did they find it?

perseverence · 02/11/2022 21:50

NCforthis864 · 02/11/2022 19:45

Is @perseverence aware s/he does not need to respond to every post on this thread?

Wasn't aware there was a legal limit on post counts or how that would infringe the rules of site. Are you aware of such a ruling?

well done how exciting with U.S. offer

We are not medicine or chemistry but interesting to hear about the same.

Good luck.

My ds did the MAT today. He said it was ok but I think he was expecting it to be awful!

Wildehorses · 02/11/2022 21:57

De-lurking to say my son found the PAT tough today, thinks his chances of an interview are negligible (has applied to study Physics and Philosophy at Oxford) but am proud he tried and gave it a shot ... nothing ventured, nothing gained ... Good luck to all those hoping for an interview after the various tests today, certainly one way of building resilience and that's no bad thing I guess. Onwards and upwards!

Riverpebble · 02/11/2022 22:01

It's a shame that this thread has taken such a negative turn 🙄😡

Thank you. Good luck to your ds. Is he hoping to do Maths at Oxford? Mine has applied for Cambridge, so will be doing STEP next year if interviewed and offered. For now he has 2 offers from other universities so far, so its a waiting game to see if Cambridge call him for an interview.

Can we have a bit of peace and love now, please?

I hope so, I didn't start the original thread for this @LilyMumsnet Confused

HoneyMobster · 02/11/2022 19:46

I give up. Anyone want to start a new thread?

I will

HewasH20 · 02/11/2022 22:04

Princesdando exactly as I said above. The first 2 were her micro/macro economics interview. They discussed the Kardashians in her politics interview, along with her EPQ based on a topic she now studies properly and time travel was philosophy.

She took history, maths and English language at A level. Her final degree will be in PP without the E, as she dropped one of the two core econ modules last year. She found the maths too hard to continue with it as she never completed the A level maths syllabus at school thanks to that thing called Covid.

Her entire degree will be determined by 8 exams next June. Once you realise that it does put the TSA in perspective!

Same here Wildehorses. He has worked hard consistently and gave it his best shot, so we are very proud of him.

Wildehorses DD is taught by someone who champions that niche degree. I have the greatest admiration for anyone whose brain works in such a way to actively want to study advanced logic after logic. The fresher's reading list for phil actually tells them that they should try to read a few chapters of the Logic Manual before they start but the almost certainly won't understand any of it.

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 22:21

Wildehorses two of my DC have a friend each who read Physics and Philosophy, both were off the scale in terms of intelligence.

Thanks, I am in awe of how his brain is wired to be good at both those subjects but he is absolutely resigned to not securing an offer, very realistic about the odds, but he did not want regrets and "what ifs" when he is older ... hence he applied to Oxford and tried his best, that's all you can ask for!

Ah lovely to hear! He is a scholarship student and bright alright but alas, not "off the scale" ...that's me being honest, not modest 😆

@Kissingfrogs25 My DC has had experience with Geography and Modern Languages interviews recently so if helpful more than happy to share our experiences. Both Oxford. I also do mock interviews for both O & C for their school.

One top tip is to be fully conversant on the books and ideas discussed on the PS. Both DC were asked to share their views on books they referred to. Discussions could get quite heated - being prepared to challenge tutors' views in interviews seemed to be welcomed.

Ds has applied for linguistics and Cambridge and if he does get an interview would definitely need practice. What would be a good way to get him a good practice interview if he has one? He hasn’t had a lot of input from school and he needs to work on listening!
