I agree with you completely here. Ours were funded by a massive fundraising appeal. The government originally promised us 270 (for a school of c950 in March 2020) but then decided that as we had "so many" we couldn't have any. The actual number we had was approx 35. So much for levelling up! The kids are really anti-government without staff needing to say anything...

I am agreeing back.

I have nothing but praise for individual staff members at DD's secondary school who went above and beyond to help families including mine with G.C.S.Es food parcels etc. in 2020

I totally understand they were and are unsupported by the government. It does affect attainment and it does affect who is able to apply for Oxbridge there are too many hurdles.

Thank you for your contribution.

I say this with no malice or underlying agenda i genuinely appreciate you speaking out. I am incredulous myself and daughter have got this far for starters. Regardless of onward progress.

Having just asked earlier about offers - my DC has received one! It's their insurance choice (Southampton) but we are very happy to have it.

Fab. Hard work gone in to that. Parents, teachers, young people.

@Kissingfrogs25 My DC has had experience with Geography and Modern Languages interviews recently so if helpful more than happy to share our experiences. Both Oxford. I also do mock interviews for both O & C for their school.

One top tip is to be fully conversant on the books and ideas discussed on the PS. Both DC were asked to share their views on books they referred to. Discussions could get quite heated - being prepared to challenge tutors' views in interviews seemed to be welcomed.

Sounds like excellent advice.
I'm flagging this evening tired but books discussions thanks for tip.

And without wanting to derail and get political headlines i am aware of - schools and colleges funding cut. God help us.

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 18:17

Each person has a different way of expressing themselves. And that is fine!

It's fine up to the point where it's gratuitously aggressive and rude and beyond that point it's not actually fine at all, which is why so many posters have objected and asked you to stop.

Malbec plus ca change etc on the funding front for school.

The main difference in educational provision during the course of the pandemic was between the state and the independent sectors and that is something that unis are very well aware of, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Er...yes...for those of us on the front line in state schools...

...yes...we know.

Don't think we need a quote in latin to tell us that, actually,

and if you think that is 'aggressive' ...go ahead and report this post also

there is still such a thing as free speech.. on here...

perseverence · 02/11/2022 18:30

or french...or whatever language that is. I am bilingual but don't speak that particular one!

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 18:43

I haven't reported any posts perseverance and don't intend to start.

I don't believe that you have a monopoly of front line experience.

Plus ca change is merely convenient shorthand. Apologies if expressing myself not in English offends.

No probs. Goodbye,

As long as you don't mind Taten statt warten.

Sorry, I must have been marking too many Thinking Skills Asessments over for the Oxford exam over the past couple of days...

My brain is fried...😀

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 19:02

I'm fine with any language perseverance. I've a mixed background myself and have lived in a number of countries. I think it's only the English who are so other language averse, if the state of our MFL provision in schools in recent years is anything to go by. I think plus ca change is pretty universal however....

perseverence · 02/11/2022 19:06

Thank heavens I'm not English then.

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 19:08

Ok well I don't really see why you objected to a couple of French words in that case. Perhaps we should revert to the original thread, if I don't have to explain myself further?

I don't think you do Goodbye.

Unless you really want to.

But you are not 'in charge' of this thread and therefore will not be dictating what people say on it.

As the thread title suggests it is for people wanting to support and discuss applications to Oxbridge.

Since I'm not aware you have a DD or a DS applying, I would just take a day off and go to bed if I were you!

LilyMumsnet · 02/11/2022 19:34

Can we have a bit of peace and love now, please?

juicy0 · 02/11/2022 19:35

Please can this just stop? As I understand it this thread was originally started for us, as parents, to share the highs and the lows our DC are encountering throughout this process and support them as much as we can. I've enjoyed it in until now but it's been taken in a very different direction today which is a shame in my opinion.
I'm not saying the issues raised aren't worthy of discussion but please set up another separate thread so that this one can return to what it was

DeliberatelyObtuse · 02/11/2022 19:37

I guess it all goes quiet now until the results come through

Here's hoping the other offers continue to come in for everyone Smile

HoneyMobster · 02/11/2022 19:39

Please just give it a rest @perseverence - you've totally de-railed this thread today to the point where lots of us who were happily contributing are now inclined to withdraw. Heaven knows what the lurkers are thinking.,,,

Nothing like a nice spot of victim blaming then eh?
Goodbyestranger has got nothing to do with it? and they don't even have a DD or DS applying!

Incredible!

NCforthis864 · 02/11/2022 19:45

Is @perseverence aware s/he does not need to respond to every post on this thread?

HoneyMobster · 02/11/2022 19:46

I give up. Anyone want to start a new thread?

perseverence · 02/11/2022 19:50

Great. I'll be there!

DeliberatelyObtuse · 02/11/2022 19:54

FFS

Please can we get back to what this thread was about originally?

This whole Oxbridge/UCAS thing is new to us and I had found this thread really helpful

Please can we just support each other and share news?

goodbyestranger · 02/11/2022 19:55

Astonishing.

Nope I don't have any more DC left to apply - I ran out with DC8 in 2020 - but I do have a general interest in the Oxbridge threads for various reasons which I owe no-one an explanation for.

In addition, with the number of DC that I've had who've been successful in the applications process (something which seems to confound most of the DCs' tutors if they get wind of it), I can occasionally be of some use to the parents of current applicants and I'm happy to offer help where required. Over the years plenty of parents whose DC have been successful have offered help and enough people seem to be glad of our collective experience that it seems marginally worthwhile to hang around. My DC have read subjects across the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and STEM divide, so arguable reasonable breadth.
