Second, third year accommodation

Dd just started first year and is pleased with her room/halls.

Thinking ahead to next year and a bit concerned about rent increases/availability (having read threads about difficulty renting generally right now)

How has it been for yours finding private accommodation?

My DD does a uni job so gets accommodation but her friends in Edinburgh who didn't sign up early (June) really struggled particularly those on a limited budget. Pre-Covid you could wait until August to look in Edinburgh. She has two friends sofa surfing/commuting.

Rent freeze in Scotland so not sure this will make landlords reluctant to let early to students for next year.

Most of them start looking at the end of the first term (which can be too soon with friendship groups changing etc). None of mine struggled to find anywhere but it's possibly a bit different now.

Yes it was all signed and sealed by the Christmas of the first year. No surprise that by later in the academic year, she'd met better friends who she would have preferred to have shared with.
Similarly, final year now, but they're expected to give notice on their house by end of Nov if they don't want to stay in it next year; it feels too soon to know.
It's not great that the market moves so early.

There will be plenty of houses up for rent; most of those those coming to the end of their degree will go home. But find out when they start to go on to the rental market - usually December / January depending on which city, and don't dilly-dally once they do.

End of first term seems ridiculous! But also don't want to wait too late.
Heard that some students are commuting from Bath and farther.
