Student banking - problems with UCAS 4 digit code?

UCAS sent out an email with the 4 digit code that is supposed to act as confirmation of identity for applications online for student bank accounts. However DD has tried now with 3 different banks and the code isn't working.
Anyone else had this problem? We have both checked it so it isn't human error on our part.

My DD bank wanted the 16 digit code that is on the letter.

Now that's interesting - the UCAS letter says this is the code to use, but we'll try her other code as well and see if it works! Thank you @clodaghrogers

So she tried and no - it's the 4 digit code the bank wants but the code is then rejected! She's going to have to go in to our nearest branch (18 miles away) to set it up instead.

Turns out the issue with with Nationwide Building Society's systems not recognising codes.
She had to go and do it in person - took ages.
