2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

That's amazing, @PerkyBlinder!

Once upon a time, I did some Art History as part of a degree. I ended up writing my dissertation on a few Netherlandish paintings of donors-with-saints.

Look at the dog in this one by Gerard David (now in the National Gallery); over the years, the paint has faded and you can see that the donor's dog was added with thinner paint on top of the floor-tiles, presumably at the donor's request after the painting was nearly done!

@PerkyBlinder it is a good point. DS has a lot of lino prints from A level which are really quite commercial. He was going to try selling them but has never got round to it. And now he has moved so far on in his head he can't be bothered! I might try for him!! They are mainly of local churches(this is my church!) and so he could do it for charity if nothing else!

@PhotoDad fascinating!

PhotoDad · 02/04/2023 18:05

Also, DD has just had information about the (in)famous "Drawing Trip" at the start of second year. Every year, the illustrators at CSA go somewhere with completely different architecture to Cambridge, for a week of observational street-drawing. Admittedly, any city in the UK would fit the bill... but they're going to Seville! I'm very jealous.

PhotoDad · 02/04/2023 18:09

@Lottsbiffandsmudge Great linoprint. And a lovely church, as well!

Wbeezer · 03/04/2023 17:31

That's DS3 had an offer of a place at Glasgow to study Fashion. It's what he set his heart on. We've goto deal with the accommodation nightmare now...GSA is not part of the Uni so no guaranteed accommodation for first years and Glasgow was awful last year.
At least he has an unconditional so we will be able to act quickly.

PhotoDad · 03/04/2023 17:35

Congratulations to @Wbeezer DS, and good luck with accommodation!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 03/04/2023 19:07

Congrats!

QGMum · 04/04/2023 08:52

Well done to everyone with offers and hope it all works out in the end for those not achieving their aims this year.

My Dc now has to make a decision between AUB and Kingston for FAD. They seem to favour AUB as more closely aligned to their preferred specialism of animation. Any thoughts from anyone welcome.

PhotoDad · 04/04/2023 12:14

Two places we didn't look at, @QGMum, as being a bit too far away! AUB Animation is accredited by "ScreenSkills" which is the UK organisation for TV/film training... that might be a plus point for going there, especially if your DC plans to stay on there after the FAD?

Localher0 · 04/04/2023 12:49

@QGMum my DC has been on Kingston FAD this past year. They have had a ball and it's really stretched them. As a result of being exposed to the 4 different pathways offered they've now changed their degree course - something I NEVER thought would happen as they were so dead set on Textiles. The pastoral care has been outstanding too. Feel free to DM me if you like.

luluposs · 04/04/2023 15:29

@Localher0 what degree is your child heading to post KFAD and are they staying there? So glad to hear KSA has been a great experience - that's my daughter's first choice for Sept! Def top of the league tables for her chosen course, which is fashion. Super hard to get into too. Just looking at Kingston halls now....

Localher0 · 04/04/2023 22:34

@luluposs off to NTU to do furniture & product design. During A levels was absolutely certain that Textiles was the thing and wouldn't contemplate anything else. FAD opened their eyes to different pathways. Lots of their friends are staying on for degree - don't quote me but I think they like students to stay on.

Wbeezer · 05/04/2023 12:07

I'm having a ridiculous Mum wobble about DS3 going to Glasgow instead of his first choice Edinburgh. ( I should be happy he got a fashion place anywhere as they are like gold dust for home students). I think it's because I'm an alumnus of Edinburgh and liked being able to imagine him there, it was the safe, nice choice and I've enjoyed meeting up with him there. Glasgow, with all its recent troubles just feels like more of a risk. I think I'm feeling the loss of my role as advisor and helper, it's been a big focus for the last few years, even though DS3 has been away since last summer I'm suddenly feeling the empty nest. Doesn't help that DH is busy with work and I'm stuck in with COVID.
I need to give myself a talking to for getting over involved.

PhotoDad · 05/04/2023 12:20

@Wbeezer I know what you mean, I love being the "advisor" in my family, I like reading up and researching things. I have another DC to go but it will be difficult. No real advice, just sympathy.

ArtyMom · 06/04/2023 22:27

Anyone heard re. Foundation diploma places at UAL for Sept'23 yet?
We are waiting to hear from Camberwell. Applied early Feb.

luluposs · 08/04/2023 00:57

@ArtyMom everyone we know who's applied for UAL FADs is still waiting - I've heard it usually later this month, even into May! So, you're not alone :)

mondaytosunday · 08/04/2023 11:40

@ArtyMom my daughter is still waiting to hear from Camberwell for Foundation too. I think her portfolio went in around March 10. Isn't the deadline for international students early April? Maybe they are sorting through those to make final decisions. She has an interview in ten days at Morley College Chelsea which has impressive facilities but we found out at open evening that the foundation year is only 30-35 max!

luluposs · 08/04/2023 12:35

@Wbeezer curious when you say about fashion places for home students being like gold dust - do you mean for Glasgow specifically or anywhere?

I must admit I'm continuously amazed how hard the process is for our kids doing these subjects vs those filling in one form and submitting it as per trad (my!) academic degree pathway!

I've heard Glasgow is amazing for fashion - one of my daughter's classmates had it as her first choice, is a superb designer and got rejected. It sounds very competitive. She's going to LCF instead.

My daughter only wanted London colleges so that ruled out anywhere north! She's also going into a fashion degree in Sept... well done to your son! And I bet he - and you - will love Glasgow!!

DesignDD · 08/04/2023 13:33

We are still waiting to hear from MMU (Product Design and Craft)...DD has all other offers and is worried if they leave it much longer accommodation at both mmu and other places will have filled up..

PerkyBlinder · 08/04/2023 16:01

My daughter is still waiting on UAL and MMU and feeling thankful she’s taking a gap year because would be feeling quite stressed about accommodation although then if it’s a rejection this year, she will need to decide whether to accept one of her her deferred unconditional offers or whether to apply again next year so could be in a similar position next year if still waiting to hear then.

She’d be in a stronger position next year if she does get rejected and decides to apply again as will be doing related work experience in her gap year as has been asked to do the photography and to help out with the social media feed of a gorgeous local cafe and shop with beautifully curated hand made ceramics and gifts. Plus she wants to do some travelling after working and to experiment more with moving image. She says if that happens then she’ll visit everywhere again and see how she feels and decide then which sounds v sensible to me. She will probably visit everywhere again anyway even if she does get offers from MMU and/or UAL LCC

PhotoDad · 08/04/2023 16:04

Sympathies to all still waiting. I do think it's crazy that unis have so many different and competing systems for accommodation. First Come, First Served is great if you know where you want to go and get an early offer, but rubbish otherwise. Fingers crossed for good news soon!

PerkyBlinder · 08/04/2023 16:14

@Wbeezer Hope you’re feeling better. I find everything feels worse when you’re stuck in and feeling ill.

Wbeezer · 08/04/2023 18:01

@luluposs I'm referring to Scottish students going to Scottish institutions, for instance the acceptance rate for Scottish students wanting to do fashion at Edinburgh hovers around 7% and I think it's about 10% for Glasgow. It's because numbers are very tightly restricted due to the free fees on top of the departments being quite small.
I think DS was very lucky, his portfolio was very quirky, he did some illustrations that were 3d models he built in in a 3d modelling computer programme, they were very Avant Garde and unusual, he got a lot of positive attention for them in his interview. He didn't have any finished garments but a few interesting fabric prints and some strong life drawing. I think they want to know what he will come up with!

Mokeylovesart · 11/04/2023 16:36

Hi all, fab thread, think I’ve found my MN home!

My daughter is currently doing FAD, and is in the fortunate position of having received offers at her two top choices UAL Wimbledon and Edinburgh (2nd yr start) for costume design. We were hoping she’d get an offer for at least one of these, but now we’re finding it so difficult knowing which to choose! Live in South of England so Edinburgh feels really far, but equally if it’s the best course for her we both feel it’s worth it. The trouble is, both places say their course is the best, strongest reputation within industry etc.
Does anyone have any experience with these uni’s/courses? Any help/opinions gladly received!
