Does anyone know of the cheapest way students can travel by bus or train?
My daughter is going to Winchester University and she wants to be able to come back to London but it all seems so expensive.

She needs to get a Young Person card and buy her tickets in advance. I think my son bought the card directly from The Trainline

Isn't national express cheaper still? Particularly if you book weeks in advance.

Yes, National Express would be cheaper. There's only 1 bus every 2 hours from Winchester to Victoria, I think, unless you want to go via Heathrow (which is more expensive). I was a student in London and lived in Birmingham (40 years ago) and always used National Express.

Train from Winchester to Waterloo takes half the time but costs twice as much. Which is preferable might depend on whereabouts in London home is. I think the bus station in Winchester is more central than the railway station (it's a few years since I was there), but it's not a big city so the difference is minimal.

You can buy a coachcard in the same way as a railcard: www.nationalexpress.com/en/offers/coachcards/young-person.

Thank you I will look into a train card and a coach card for her
