Bristol accommodation - Culver House

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2022 09:29

Dd got Culver House which although described as being in the west village, with most residences in Clifton, it seems as if some are in Park St which is near the centre (and would I think be more within east village).

It seems a bit confusing. Does anyone have any experience of Culver House?

Was hers an unconditional offer? I didn't think they were hearing till next week.
( not answering your question I know!)

Maggiethecat · 20/08/2022 13:51

@NCTDN - she was on a gap year so had her accommodation confirmed a few weeks ago.

I don't know that hall itself but if it's next door to Orchard Heights then it's a nice area, close to uni.

mumsneedwine · 20/08/2022 16:11

@Maggiethecat fantastic location (DD was at Orchard Heights). Right by the harbour and all the bars and clubs, walking distance to Asda (over the little bridge), loads of parks nearby. Close to Uni so can pop in for lectures, use the library and still be home in time for Spoons. And easy bus ride to sports centre and SB if have a party there. DD loved OH and has lived with her flatmates again in 2nd year.

Maggiethecat · 21/08/2022 19:49

@FanSpamTastic and @mumsneedwine - If the link is anything to go by it says most residences are in Clifton, yet the heading of 'Location of Culver House' indicates Park St which is near where you describe. All very confusing.

I'm sure she'll be fine either way but she was looking forward to being in Clifton.

@Maggiethecat my DD says 'where in Clifton' as it all runs into each other. It's about a half hour walk to the bridge from OH (up a hill) and 15-20 minutes to the Downs. DD says there is no centre to Clifton, it's just a 'bunch of houses'. She's happy to provide more info if helps - she's sitting right next to me.

PrinceOfPegging · 21/08/2022 20:14

Culver House is in a great area for going out etc. Up the hill to uni, but you are around all the bars and clubs etc. Not too far to sainsburys either.

Maggiethecat · 21/08/2022 20:37

@mumsneedwine - thanks for asking your Dd.

From the link above it says:

'This accommodation is part of the West Residential Village. Home to around 3,000 students, this is the largest residential village in terms of the area it covers. Most residences are based in Clifton, with some located near Park Street and Gloucester Road. Clifton is a popular and picturesque suburb of Bristol known for its Georgian architecture, cafe culture, and green spaces. Park Street boasts a selection of quirky shops, bars, and restaurants'

It's contradictory as it says most are in Clifton (which is West Village, though it doesn't specify exactly where) with some located near Park St - but the photo and google map seem to focus on Park St which makes me wonder if that is where most of the residences are.

I'll probably have to find out if there is an accommodation officer that I can speak with for more specifics.

@Maggiethecat the majority of students are now in Park Street as the 3 biggest residences are there. And there's also Coutrooms and Riverside which are nearby. Clifton has some smaller ones and Goldey, which is bigger. It really is a great location for social life and Uni. It's walking distance to everywhere (except sports centre and they get a free bus pass for the first year).

Maggiethecat · 21/08/2022 20:52

I think I'm being a numpty! For some reason I thought Park St was more in the centre.

Is Park St the start of the (in)famous hill that students walk up to uni?

@mumsneedwine - think we cross posted!

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2022 20:55

@Maggiethecat ! Yes, Christmas Steps. But it's worse in 2nd year when they are in Redlands as then it's St Michaels Hill. Bristol is hilly 😊

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2022 20:58

@Maggiethecat DD says Culver House is in corner of Park St and Frogmore St. there is a v convenient multi storey in Frogmore St, right next to OH.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2022 21:01

@Maggiethecat the three halls are top, car park on right. Start of Harbour at bottom and Brandon Hill on left (if DD watches Skins she'll know)

And finally @Maggiethecat , halls bottom right and Wills top left. Hope this helps 😊

@mumsneedwine - thanks! I had somehow got wires crossed with location of another hall when we visited in Feb.

Good thing I am not driving her down 😂

@Maggiethecat 😊 she'll have a fantastic time. DD absolutely loves the place !

Maggiethecat · 21/08/2022 21:19

@mumsneedwine - can't remember if your dd just did first year? Great that she loves it.

Have encouraged dd to check out FB or some such to see if she can hook up with other people at Culver but you'd think I asked her to go mug an OAP!!

Ds is waiting for his accommodation allocation on Tuesday. Thanks for the useful images. He is hoping for west village and I know Orchard Heights was one of his options.

NCTDN · 21/08/2022 21:25

I'm hoping that on Tuesday they'll find out a moving in date as well.

EveSix · 21/08/2022 21:26

The part of Bristol in which most accommodation and University buildings are situated is really tiny and is all pretty much set along or in close proximity to one looong road (different names in different sections). There really is nothing in it, no real distances to speak of.
Your DD's accommodation is at the bottom of Park St, which is close to the harbour and 'town-town', as in the city centre proper. It is a hill, but not massively steep; nice and broad and lined with bars and shops.
The top of Park Street connects to 'the Triangle' an annoying little one way system, and the start of Clifton. The Triangle sort of merges onto Whiteladies Rd, which leads up onto the Downs which is a large recreational green space. There it changes it's name to Stoke Rd and then becomes Stoke Hill as it reaches Sneyd Park and Stoke Bishop, where there is further accommodation. It'll take no more than 40 minutes to walk from one end to the other of this stretch, and very regular buses service the route.
The areas in between is massively dominated by the university, whether it is accommodation and halls, university departments, private rented flats and houses, student services, cafes, shops, eateries, bars etc which are predominantly frequented by students. Whole sections of the surrounding areas close off for days on end at various points during the year when prospective students visit with their families, during freshers' week etc.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2022 21:28

@Maggiethecat my DD is going into 3rd year - vet student.
If your DD finds the Culver House group chat (TSR should have the details on Bristol page) there might be a spreadsheet. DD had one that someone set up that you filled your name into your flat so you could see who you were living with before.

gogohmm · 21/08/2022 21:31

It's in the city centre. The trenchard street car park is where we normally park our car!

Maggiethecat · 21/08/2022 22:42

Thanks @EveSix and @gogohmm - went down for offer holders' tour but it seems ages ago!

@mumsneedwine - yes, I remember now! Got some useful info from you another thread that had become quite 'lively' as I recall 😁

Will ask dd to check for group chat. Thank you

@Maggiethecat 😂😂 they do tend to sometimes. I then leave as it all gets silly and life's too short to argue.
If your DD has any questions I'm sure my DD might know the answer. Like the best clubs, pubs, cafes, library spots 😊.
