Aeronautical engineer - which Uni?

My eldest is booking himself in to Open Days and his sixth form have offered him advice (I don’t know what - getting information out of DS is like pulling teeth…) but I am wondering what the mumsnet collective think? I am completely clueless in this area - any help gratefully received!

He has completed mocks for AS maths, further maths, physics and computer science.

I know someone who went to Sheffield Uni and has now got a good career www.sheffield.ac.uk/aerospace/about/facilities

My husband went to Shrivenham. But that was many many years ago!

DH has worked in aerospace for 25 years; he says Loughborough has a v good reputation

Slowgrowingelm · 22/06/2022 23:12

Thank you all very much, I’ll make a start with those.

Here’s a good place to start: www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings/aeronautical-and-aerospace-engineering

Thanks again everyone.

He has open days booked for Cambridge and Imperial, which are on all the uni guide lists given above, and I’ve passed on all the other suggestions.

Is there a recommended number of open days students should look at?

He’s my eldest so I’ve not been through this before (and I grew up in a different country/didn’t go to uni)!

Same here op, Ds has same A levels too

and I grew up o/s, so I’m clueless

Luckily the school is good. The lists below sound useful

CherryReid · 23/06/2022 18:23

Queens Belfast used to do aero eng

NCTDN · 23/06/2022 22:36

OP and @MarshaBradyo can I ask you how those a levels have been? DS wants to do those and go to a maths school for them. Are they not too heavy going? He also wants to do aerospace engineering.

@NCTDN he’s found them ok, he needs to get results back from mocks though so don’t want to jinx it

But work wise he’s not found it too much, he nearly did economics instead of CS and said at one point he was glad he didn’t as a friend had said it was quite hard so I guess he views his choices as ok

MarshaBradyo · 24/06/2022 10:04

But I reckon it depends on what student likes too

Slowgrowingelm · 24/06/2022 13:43

@NCTDN we also don’t have the mocks results back but in general DS enjoys maths and physics and - certainly up till now - finds Maths relatively easy. He has to put a lot more effort in to Further Maths though but he has a good handle on how best to utilise his time for studying (after a shock in his Y9 mocks - lesson learnt!).

I do think that although he is doing the 4, and works part time on the weekend, the maths based subjects are a little easier to handle purely from a time perspective. He puts a lot of time in to revision but he doesn’t have to write essays or long responses in the same way a subject such as history or literature would need. That’s my perspective on it though, I could have it completely wrong!

I think he would consider dropping CS if he doesn’t get the AS results he wants but certainly he’ll hang on to that if he can. He is quite driven and has the 4 in his head. I agree with Marsha, a lot depends on the student - do they like the subjects and can they manage (or learn to) their time?
