@Xenia, my BFF did his year in law school there too!

I did my law school post grad year in Chester in the days when you could only do it in three places all run by the College of Law/Law Society - London, Guildford or Chester. My children and grandchildren would not exist but for Chester - where I met my future husband so it was a very seminal place for me.

It is good to hear everyone's news. We are 5 years on from 2017 starting university and the twins have now moved to the last 2 years of being trainee solicitors. I think their school friend who studied dentistry (his father is a dentist too) whom they saw last night may still be in his studying phase and my twins went for their NHS dental check up this week and had hair cuts today. The working as my trainee solicitor is going fine and they have some compulsory courses in October (just a minor Professional Skills course for potential solicitors just 12 days in total between Oct - Dec. One set of grandchidlren made it abroad on holiday and other very little one remains incredibly cute - I took her to the park recently whilst her mother had a law job interview and she got it - first one applied for and did so well. We went to my older son's house in Oxfordshire at the weekend for the day and had a lovely walk - he is near that White Horse of 3000 years ago so we had a walk up there and on the Ridgeway too and a nice meal out. I had not been to his house since March 2020 (he bought it in 2019) and it is a really lovely little Bellway new detached house, still in very good condition and not had snagging issues you associate with new builds. He seems very happy (he is the one child who is NOT a lawyer).

My dh also went to College of Law , Chester for PG Dip in Law!( previously had done Medicine up to Consultant level, but decided to change careers!) then went to Man Met to do BVC back in the day! .....our younger dd also went to Man Met
interestingly between the 3dcs, dh and myself we've got 11 degrees but only been to 4 Unis!
ds starts his grad scheme on Monday and has moved into his cottage....only to discover he'll be wfh for 4/5 days! ....I'm gutted for him as after completing his degree during lockdown I thought this would be great opportunity to meet new people and get to know his new surroundings....can only hope they've arranged some social gatherings so he can get to meet his colleagues

Xenia · 11/08/2022 17:45

May be he can ask to go in - a lot of companies are letting individuals choose so those with huge houses or children at home may want to be home and younger people may want to go into the office 5 days week.

Lovely to hear everyone's news. DD is now almost at the end of her second full week of "proper" work. She is in the office f/t for the first month but then can WFH for 2 days per week so perhaps Stop's son will be able to do something similar.

There are 3 other trainees in dd's firm so I hope they get along well. 2 of my best friends are people I started my first proper job with 36 years ago - and they've been brilliant support over the years.

Think working f/t from 9-5 has come as a bit of a shock tho after 4 months off - as has paying for transport "every day". DD was used to walking to uni.

Hope all the job hunting, travelling, moving on to next stage goes well. I can't believe it's 18 years since going to school.

bigTillyMint · 12/08/2022 02:13

@Stopyourhavering64, I agree with Xenia - he should ask (and be assertive about it if necessary) if he can go in at least 3 days a week. I know of both managers and young people who have done this - MH matters too.

bigTillyMint · 12/08/2022 02:15

@readsalotgirl63, glad your DD has got started - is she in London? Living at home?

Thanks @bigTillyMint , I"ll tell him to discuss this with his manager....especially since he's starting in a completely new field (IT/coding) so would probably benefit from some "hands on" help to begin with....plus the technology campus where he's based sounds pretty amazing with on site restaurant gym / football/tennis courts!

RedHelenB · 12/08/2022 06:32

Had a road trip to see the surgery and the practice owner took dd1 out for lunch while dd2 and I had a little look around and a Westherspoons. Traffic was dreadful so it took almost double the time it should have, but it seems a nice place. Now to find accommodation.

readsalotgirl63 · 12/08/2022 08:39

DD is in Glasgow so sharing a flat. Agree @Stopyourhavering64 your son should ask to be office based. Social isolation was/is one of the reasons staff in my organisation could request a return to the office at least part of the time as management recognised the impact of WFH especially on younger people living alone.

bigTillyMint · 12/08/2022 08:43

Will she be looking for accommodation in the Wirral @RedHelenB? Does she drive?

Xenia · 18/08/2022 19:55

Yes, be assertive within reason about going into the office. Some employers want particularly younger people in anyway so they can learn and be on hand to do the worst jobs etc. Also many young people are not lounging around in huge parent's house with swimming pools but in tiny shared flats which are not so suitable for 12 hours a day at a computer screen. It is a very difficult issue of our day as quite a few older people and those with children really love not having commuting expenses and being able to be based at home where they have sometimes a separate office. That is not the case for other people however.

All well here. A relative has got an Oxbridge place (very good results today) so all the family is very happy.
Good luck to the RedH daughter in the dentistry work. My son's school friend is going into year SIX studying it abroad in the EU. I thought my twins were studying long just having finished year 5 (as they did 2 years of law after their degrees) but they have friends doing even longer or going back to study after a year of working.

Tbh, she needs to get her finger out to find somewhere. I can see her crashing in her sisters student house which she'd hate. She's wanting to be city centre and drive in to work, she's been told she's a bit too young to live in the Wirral.

RedHelenB · 19/08/2022 08:15

@needmoresleep thats what dd dis when she knew where she'd been ranked. She got her 3rd choice of area but discarded some because although some jobs in the area were where she wanted to be, there were some that were way out. One of her friends did a spreadsheet which was very organised. I hope she ends up somewhere she can be happy, but the good thing is there will be others going through the same thing.

bigTillyMint · 19/08/2022 09:37

@RedHelenB a bit too young to live on the Wirral This is CLASS 🤣 Definitely - I was thinking that! If she had to, West Kirby would be possibly the best?!

Had a nice couple of long weekends - this weekend/mon DD and her BF came here, the weekend before we met up with her in Lincoln - had the Friday in the town (which is a really nice place to visit) and then a 2-day inland waterways course.

That sounds good.

Nothing much happening here except going through Oxbridge application stuff.

Horsemad · 26/08/2022 17:08

Lincoln is really very nice and has a Med School at the uni now, as well.

Xenia · 26/08/2022 21:46

Nothing much happening here either. One of my sons and I have started thinking about possible secondments during his trainee solicitor training contract - both his sisters did at least one during theirs over 10 years ago. He is doing well in his work for me.

A family member got her place at Oxbridge thankfully - she was not sure if she would make the A level grades so that was a massive relief when the results came out (and she worked very hard indeed for A levels - first public exams for those doing A levels this year).

I know Lincoln (mentioned above) as an earlier Cathedral organist there (who played the organ at my wedding) was a very close friend of the family on the other side including of my children's father who is an organist too so I spent a bit of time there. However I doubt too many people on the thread will have student age children going into Lincoln Cathedral and interested in choral or organ music. Lovely building however .

I've never been to Lincoln but will add it to my list of places to visit. Our school choir was meant to visit in 2020 but Covid put paid to that. Nice to hear some Stanford @Xenia - DD2 sang the soprano solos in his Magnificat in G in her last year at school, and for an informal audition at Leicester Cathedral. That's a nice place to visit, although it's closed until 2023 I think.

It's exciting reading about the not-so-youngsters. I went to see my DF and booked tickets for him, DD1 and me to go to the football match yesterday at the Etihad. We sat right behind the goal where all 6 were scored and had a fab time. DD1 got the train up from Cambridge so we had Friday evening and all day Saturday together which was lovely. I dropped her at the station this morning then I drove home. She's safely back ready for a party. She's doing more demonstration work and carrying on supervising 1st years which brings in some money, however, she's about to blow a third of her entire research budget on some cell cultures, which sounds a bit scary...

readsalotgirl63 · 01/09/2022 19:48

DD has now had her graduation and it was a lovely day despite the rain. She enjoyed having her "moment" and sharing it with friends.

The Chancellor (Dame Katherine Grainger) gave a moving and inspirational speech - and you'd never have guessed she'd done it 8 times already. She was great and spent a lot of time mingling with graduates and families afterward.

DH and I were very proud but a little sad that my parents and FIL aren't around as they'd have been chuffed.

DD has also now completed her first month at work and had her first pay - which I suspect is burning a hole in her pocket. Hope everyone's DC are doing well and thriving

RedHelenB · 01/09/2022 19:53

Sounds a lovely graduation, seems ages ago the dds had theirs but its only really been 5 weeks.DD1 did her induction and has finally got her GDC number. She starts properly on Monday.

bigTillyMint · 02/09/2022 08:01

@RedHelenB, good luck to your DD - did she find somewhere to live?

@readsalotgirl63, I hear you about GPs missing their DGC graduating - my DM always found DS too much of a handful and would have been astounded to know he did History (her pet interest) in the same part of the country she studied in.

RedHelenB · 02/09/2022 08:15

That is a sore point @bbigTillyMint , no she's staying with someone from her course temporarily ( only sorted that the day before) but hopefully will get sorted now she's in the area. Thought she might be sleeping in her car at one bit. Still, they're adults now plenty of learning to happen now they've left academic life

bigTillyMint · 02/09/2022 08:44

Crikey, hope she doesn’t have to sleep in the car! Fingers crossed!
