Fin tech degrees?

Anyone know anything about these/had any experience?

Son is doing A level Maths, Business and Drama/Theatre Studies. Into crypto etc…

I see Southampton does a joint honours Finance and Financial Technology which may suit him. It’s got some Economics and Marketing in there too.

Any experience or thoughts most welcome. On that course or any others. Sussex seems to do it too.

Honestly these companies would probably prefer to hire Maths/Engineering/CS graduates, especially those with a masters or even a phd.

@pinklavenders thanks. Maybe. He definitely doesn’t want to do pure maths. Or CS. Maybe we need to try and find someone and ask. These degrees seem pretty new.

What about a Joint Honours degree like Maths with Finance? There are several of this nature. They are well established and already known to employers. Good students get good jobs

What does he actually want to do as a job? There are all sorts of jobs related to FinTechs and the kind of role he might want is probably more determinative of the degree he should get. FWIW, my masters included FinTech law but I got that after I worked with/in FinTechs.

FinTech is a very rapidly changing area & whatever you study now might be outdated in a few years. It would almost certainly be better to do a more general degree like maths or computer science.

OTOH, the FinTech degree might well be 90% regular maths & computing, just with a fancy name on top to attract students who think regular computing is dull. In which case it is probably OK. But the core skills you want to learn is still the maths.
