Thanks so much @icanbewhatiwant

LouisCatorze · 03/07/2022 07:15

Anyone else got a DC who's just finished GCSEs (I'm thinking not as not come across any of you on the Yr11 threads)?

There's no reason not to carry on with this series of threads too, particularly as so many have DC who haven't finished their degrees yet.

minesawine · 05/07/2022 08:27

That is a great idea @VanCleefArpels. My DS left Nottingham at the weekend kicking and screaming. He is so upset that his uni days are at an end as he had a ball. He started work with Virgin Atlantic yesterday and seemed to have a good day (but that could very easily change).

In the few days he's been home I have noticed the empty fridge and full washing basket, but also the noise, mess, laughter and jokes. We are negotiating how much rent he should pay and how we live together as 2 adults, rather than mother and son.

Its a really interesting time, that takes some imagination and patience.

LouisCatorze · 05/07/2022 08:47

@minesawine good luck and most impressed at how quickly your DS has knuckled down to getting and starting his job. Hope it goes well for him and for you both as you navigate the new phase in your relationship.

VanCleefArpels · 05/07/2022 08:55

@minesawine my older one still hankers after Nottingham 3 years down the line!

LouisCatorze · 05/07/2022 10:39

@VanCleefArpels I think NTU (and Nottingham University) is that type of uni, isn't it? Another one you rarely hear a negative word about.

blametheparents · 05/07/2022 11:29

DS has loved his three years at Nottingham. He knows a few people well that are in Nottingham on four year courses, and I suspect he will spend a number of weekends there next year.
@minesawine - Hope your DS enjoys his new job. It might feel better after his first pay day! I presume that he will have to have a day off work for graduation?

minesawine · 05/07/2022 13:00

Thanks for the good wishes.

NTU has been amazing and he has loads of friends from Nottingham Uni as well. They all mix very well and they had a lot of fun. He is going back there after work on Friday for a big party and staying until after his graduation on Monday.

Day 2 of the new job, they told him about the eventual free flights and suddenly his ears perked up. Getting him up in the mornings is proving a bit more challenging.

VanCleefArpels · 05/07/2022 15:21

He was at “Uni of” not NTU, a distinction that he felt very important 😉😀.

I certainly experienced that dread feeling that I really didn’t appreciate being a student enough once I had started work!! Huge transition

LouisCatorze · 05/07/2022 16:53

Oh apologies Blush.

VanCleefArpels · 05/07/2022 18:47

@LouisCatorze I’m an alumna of NTU when it had a different name so no offence taken 😉. It amused me greatly that DS bedroom in Lenton overlooked my favourite pub from back in the dark ages 😉

CoffeeWithCheese · 06/07/2022 08:12

I can't fault those who've lost their heart to Nottingham - it's a wonderful city, and the county as a whole is a beautiful place as well. I'm biased but it's my adopted home town.

Well my results are out - I'm not a happy bunny - I missed a first by one percent and the up-rating algorithm came down against me but FOR an awful lot on the course. I've got some grounds to appeal one module mark directly linked to disability discrimination and being indirectly penalised because of how they had to structure my placement - so after discussing it with my tutor yesterday, I'm going to mount an appeal against that mark (it's complicated and I'll post a separate thread on it), but hell, a high as hell 2:1 in the pandemic as a student who has young kids of her own, with a job offer currently in the employment checks stage of the process is impressive... but I'll hate myself if I don't challenge this mark on some fairly strong grounds (I was raising concerns about this placement for a good couple of months).

LouisCatorze · 06/07/2022 09:20

@CoffeeWithCheese that is such a pity but you are right that your achievement is nevertheless to be roundly applauded. Well done. The challenges of undertaking academic studies with a young family are not to be underestimated. But yes, worth appealing the mark you're not happy with.

bigTillyMint · 06/07/2022 10:27

@CoffeeWithCheese well done on a great result! It is frustrating to get so close, but you have done brilliantly!

I am pleased to report that all graduations are done in our house (at least for this year!) - we just have to get back into being a 4 adult household again!

Benjispruce4 · 06/07/2022 16:05

Well done @CoffeeWithCheese 👏🏻

icanbewhatiwant · 06/07/2022 18:49

Well done @CoffeeWithCheese

ifonly4 · 06/07/2022 18:49

minesawine One chapter closes, another begins - really hope it works out well for your DH

CoffeewithCheese I know you're probably disappointed, but 2.1 is something to be proud of especially with the others pressures you've hold. Fingers crossed with the appeal, but hope in time you can be proud of yourself.

blametheparents · 07/07/2022 09:55

University of Nottingham released their results today, and DS got a 1st!
So pleased for him!
He is absolutely delighted.

RampantIvy · 07/07/2022 11:06

Congratulations to your DS @blametheparents

Ragwort · 07/07/2022 11:13

mine delighted to hear your DS has started his job and is enjoying it - free flights sound great Smile.

Have you attended the Graduation Ceremony - what was it like? Apologies if I have missed any comments about it.

Agree with everyone else, NTU and UoN are great Unis, good rapport between all the students. My DS returns for his final year at NTU in September ... now home after finishing his placement year, he had a wonderful time not so wonderful bringing what seems like a years worth of washing home Grin.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/07/2022 11:50

Ds sent me a message yesterday from USA to say he'd got his final result. But that was it. He hasn't told me what it was. I'm sure I know what it will be because he already had the results from dissertation, exams, essays l, previous modules etc. so I'm sure the final grade will be the same.

Well done to those with great grades.

bigTillyMint · 07/07/2022 15:10

Congratulations to your DS @blametheparents

CoffeeWithCheese · 07/07/2022 15:52

Well I've sent in the appeal - at least I will know I've tried and that I've flagged up the issues with this particular placement for the future.

Shimy · 07/07/2022 16:01

@icanbewhatiwant Why do they always do that? I mean sending a message to say 'got results', but nothing about the actual result. DS does it all the time and drives me mad, I've lost count of text messages very similar to your ds's saying. Just this afternoon he's been waiting to hear about a speculative work experience position he applied for. He shouted mid convo, 'I've got an email from XXX!" then nothing else just meandering on about his CV, what he'd like to do in future, the man who emailed him and his accomplishments, all the while not clicking on said email. Grrrrgh!

Benjispruce4 · 07/07/2022 16:17

Congratulations @blametheparents to your son. Great result.
@icanbewhatiwant did you not text back asking?
I have so many misunderstandings with my DDs over text because tone can’t be detected. I’m always telling them to phone instead.
