@MargaretThursday, do you mean essay mills? I thought they were generally fairly easily caught with the plagiarism bots? Not really sure how easily essays could be offered for online exams, but I guess there are people out there looking to make money.

The maths (and other stem AFAIK) was students working together/checking their answers AFAIK

bigTillyMint · 21/06/2022 17:02

@icanbewhatiwant, well done to your DS. Has he arrived in the US now?

I think it was more along the lines of older students offering to "help", that were the bigger issue.

I think the actual numbers caught were very small though. You can assume a few got through but realistically there will always be a few cheats in anything like that that matters.

Dd2 has got a first from Liverpool uni and graduates in July. Was on messenger to her where she was desperately trying to find a way to measure her head for her graduation garb without a tape measure. Hope the weather stays fine. Well done to all the dc who've made it through, despite the pressures of Vivid and online learning.

Benjispruce4 · 21/06/2022 21:42

Oh that’s fab @RedHelenB , congratulations to her and to you.

atiaofthejulii · 21/06/2022 23:11

Congrats to her @RedHelenB !!

LouisCatorze · 22/06/2022 08:30

@RedHelenB well done to your DD.

Really excellent that all the young people have done so well under challenging circumstances for most of their courses.

bigTillyMint · 22/06/2022 10:48

Congratulations to your DD @RedHelenB!

My DD struggled with getting a mortarboard to fit as she has a little head. She is also short, so gown fairly swamping 😂

ifonly4 · 22/06/2022 15:01

Just catching up on the updates, brilliant results all round - well done to your DCs and hopefully parents can relax a little now. DD still has another year to go, but it's all come around so quickly.

Shimy · 22/06/2022 15:15

@RedHelenB Big congrats to your DD, proud mama! DS still has another year to go.

Ragwort · 22/06/2022 19:44

Wonderful results - congratulations to all our students.

My DS will be retuning after his placement year for his final year (hope this thread keeps going).

@Mine delighted to hear your DS has got a fab sounding job, it has been so interesting to follow our sons progress on the same course - although I bet they never met Grin . My DS did a week of his placement at Heathrow and really enjoyed it.

ifonly4 · 22/06/2022 19:52

Ragwort I haven't posted much recently, but I'll still be here. DD still on a year abroad and uni there doesn't finish until July. She's on about staying there in August, coming back here for about three days to pack everything and go back to Edinburgh for her final year. I think there are a few others as well.

jano69 · 23/06/2022 18:28

Congratulations to all who have received their final degree classifications.

I have been following you all but not contributing, sorry... I found it difficult keeping up with this one and the Oxbridge/Another Path gang.

DS graduates next Friday morning (History, Durham) - yaay 🎉. Hoping I'm over Covid by then. I tested positive 3 days ago, my first time, and desperately trying not to pass it on to hubby who's the main driver.

Next steps, starting SQE1/SQE2 at a London Law University. We're still keeping our fingers crossed he'll get a training contract with a law firm, but if doesn't, he'll have to take on a postgraduate loan.

Very well done to all your lovely dc. So good to hear updates from familiar names and our young people are reaping the rewards of sheer hard work and determination.

bigTillyMint · 24/06/2022 06:54

@jano69, snap! I hadn’t realised they were doing the same 😀
Hope the covid doesn’t spread - you have a whole week, so should be fine.

Benjispruce4 · 24/06/2022 07:01

@jano69 what bad luck! I had Covid a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I was negative on day 9 but obviously you can now go about your life on day 6 anyway so hopefully you’re ok. DD was an Oxford applicant, passed test but not interview. She went in to get the grades anyway and feels she had a better time socially at Durham than she might have had at Oxford. Hopefully your DS feels the same. Good luck.

Benjispruce4 · 24/06/2022 07:02

*She went on

Benjispruce4 · 24/06/2022 07:03

Oh and nobody else in my house caught Covid from me. Windows open, sanitizer by the kettle etc etc

LouisCatorze · 24/06/2022 07:25

She went in to get the grades anyway and feels she had a better time socially at Durham than she might have had at Oxford. Hopefully your DS feels the same. @Benjispruce4 this bears out my feeling that young people do generally end up at the right university for them.

Next steps, starting SQE1/SQE2 at a London Law University. We're still keeping our fingers crossed he'll get a training contract with a law firm, but if doesn't, he'll have to take on a postgraduate loan. Good to hear from you @jano69. I know someone who got word of their training contract at a London law firm the morning they set off to start their law conversion course! Fingers crossed for your DS.

blametheparents · 24/06/2022 07:26

Also just catching up with all the results - great work by all of your DC in what has been pretty challenging circumstances.
@minesawine - Good to hear that your DS has got a job that he’s interested in. The next step - so exciting for them all.
I recall getting my first job after uni and it felt so good to be working (personally, I’d done with education by that point - well done to those who go on to postgrad, I’m not sure I could have done so)

DS gets his results in early July - so a couple of weeks to wait yet. His girlfriend (though also technically not getting her results to July) knows she’s got a 1st cos she has the results for all the individual modules! I always think a 1st sounds so fancy!

Looking forward to graduation too - at the end of July. I imagine DS will order his cap and gown lastminute and end up with something that doesn’t fit! But, c’est la vie - kinda up to him!

jano69 · 24/06/2022 07:28

I remembered you were History, BigTilly, we will be very close this time next week!

Benji, I'm so happy to hear your DD has excelled at Durham and enjoyed the social life too. DS was gutted to miss his C offer on A Level results day but has made friends for life at Durham and had a lot of fun too! So it really does work out okay in the end. I'm pleased you're over covid. Hopefully, we will both have some immunity to see the summer through!

blametheparents · 24/06/2022 07:28

Benjispruce4 · 24/06/2022 07:03

Oh and nobody else in my house caught Covid from me. Windows open, sanitizer by the kettle etc etc

Ditto! (But without the sanitizer by the kettle - we loved life on the edge! 😂)

Just kept our distance and DH slept in DS’s bedroom (DS still at uni)

jano69 · 24/06/2022 07:38

👋 @LouisCatorze I know someone who got word of their training contract at a London law firm the morning they set off to start their law conversion course! Fingers crossed for your DS. That is encouraging! DS has a 2 week summer placement at a law firm (applied to over 20). But we don't dare to hope it will convert into a training contract.

Will look forward to hearing more results come through over the next few weeks.

bigTillyMint · 24/06/2022 07:50

Well done to your DS on the internship @jano69 - I think DS will be reapplying. Such a gruelling process. Especially if you compare it to getting into a Law firm in the 80s.

jano69 · 24/06/2022 08:03

It really is a gruelling process bigTilly, but worth another shot for your DS with final degree classification in hand. I think DS was very very lucky to get the internship, it could so easily have been yet ANOTHER rejection. I hear some law firms will backdate training contracts which are started on a self funded basis so that's Plan B.

RampantIvy · 24/06/2022 08:19

Covid has hit DD's flat again. One of her flatmates tested positive the other day, so the big farewell meal isn't going to happen (one of her flatmates is leaving early to go on holiday).
Let's hope that everyone is well by the time they graduate. It feels like Newcastle is later than all the other universities - exams until mid June, results and graduation in July.

They are also being very tight lipped about results so no-one has any idea of what their degree classification might be.
