We were watching DS play rugby at Maiden Castle during half term, but I spent a lot of time watching one college’s mixed lacrosse squad training on the next door pitch. What a brilliant sport!

@KingscoteStaff Mixed lacrosse? When I was at university (nowhere near Durham) the boys refused to play with/against the girls as they thought we were too vicious! They must have toughened up some

EwwSprouts · 08/11/2022 20:33

Yes the inter college matches are mixed sex. Maybe because they are mainly beginners so they don't know what they're letting themselves in for? I haven't seen a match as we haven't been to visit DS but I look forward to doing so.

@Watsername Good to have that sorted.

Benjispruce4 · 08/11/2022 20:41

Dd played mixed lacrosse at Durham for a while. She loved it even though she’d never played lacrosse before. She eventually gave it up as some of the boys were a bit too physical and she switched to netball.

Fruitygal · 08/11/2022 20:42

@EwwSprouts congrats on the goal for mini sprout 🌱! DD has brother visiting this week for two days x

EwwSprouts · 08/11/2022 08:41

DS happy as he scored his first goal in lacrosse. That is all. 😂

Awesome! Scoring your first uni goal must be a great feeling...

EwwSprouts · 08/11/2022 22:19

@Fruitygal Parent goals there. DB and I never visited each other at university and we are only 18 months apart.

Fruitygal · 08/11/2022 22:33

@EwwSprouts Think my DS visited each other once each. DDs brothers are several years older so early twenties

SpamhappyTootsie · 13/11/2022 18:53

Anyone visiting their dc who is a member of the National Trust, Crook Hall Gardens is a lovely little oasis of calm tucked away at the edge of the city. It only reopened under NT stewardship in July this year, but the gardens were established and fascinating to walk round. Good if you have younger dc too.

Fruitygal · 14/11/2022 03:55

@SpamhappyTootsie thanks for the tip

Motherknowsbest100 · 14/11/2022 19:04

Does anybody know a bakery that delivers in Durham? It’s my child’s birthday coming up and I’d love to send a cake, we will be celebrating a week later when they come home for Xmas. Any ideas?

KingscoteStaff · 14/11/2022 19:22

We sent brownies from Squidge and Cutter. Or possibly Cutter and Squidge?

They went down very well and included Gluten free and Vegan ones to please all house mates!

Motherknowsbest100 · 14/11/2022 19:34

That’s a good idea @KingscoteStaff, I did send some lovely brownies and cookies previously that went down well so that could work, thanks. Would prefer a full cake I suppose but that might have to wait until celebrations when they come home

Baytreemum · 14/11/2022 19:47

@Motherknowsbest100 I searched all over for 21st cakes without success so my DD bought a tray bake from tesco which she stuck candles in plus packs of iced fairy cakes -everything was demolished and very popular!

Send a home baked cake in a plastic biscuit tin. If it is a good fit it survives the post...maybe just no icing on top. it worked for me.

Motherknowsbest100 · 14/11/2022 20:39

thanks for the ideas! I’ll sort something, I do love to bake @grannycab and certainly will be baking for the celebrations at home. I’ve just seen M&S do a celebration cake you can have delivered so that could work too. 😊

MarchingFrogs · 15/11/2022 09:33

We sent DS2 a 'piñata' cake from sponge.co.uk, which went down well (and fortunately no-one tried to whack it with a stick, so the kitchen decor survived un-augmented by chocolate icingGrin).

Peaseblossum22 · 26/11/2022 17:10

Sorry haven’t been here for a while but just arrived in Durham for ds 21st which we are hosting tomorrow . Durham is looking lovely although definitely colder than down South !

SpamhappyTootsie · 26/11/2022 17:50

@Peaseblossum22 have a wonderful time! We were there a couple of weeks ago and the Autumn scenery was glorious.

KingscoteStaff · 26/11/2022 17:57

Have a great party! I have just had lovely photos from DS and DD - her Newcastle Medics team is playing a hockey fixture in Durham and her loyal brother has gone down to cheer her on and buy her some tea!

EwwSprouts · 27/11/2022 20:34

@Peaseblossum22 Happy 21st celebrations!

@KingscoteStaff Hope she had a good match.

DS was looking forward to last night's Christmas gathering in college. There were going to be Yorkshire pudding wraps!! He's a simple soul 😂

par05 · 27/11/2022 22:45

Hi if any students are at Josephine butler college ( can be any college really) my dd works in the library there (she's 2nd year jb) and on Wednesday 30th between 1 and 3pm they are doing blind date with a book, which they wrap books up and you choose a book, and mingle! and are hoping for a good turnout, there's free hot drinks and cakes, so if any of your dcs have a love of reading or would just like to pop in to support would be great. 😊

SpamhappyTootsie · 28/11/2022 07:23

@par05 DS does not have a love of reading, but as a Librarian, this evening gladdens my heart! It would have been right up my street as a student. Hope it goes well for your DD and her colleagues.

Overeggingthepudding · 28/11/2022 07:42

@Peaseblossum22 Hope the 21st party was a great bash!

We popped up to see dd last weekend. It was very lovely to have a hug with my girl.
We went to the coast ( seaham) for a walk on the beach and visited a v nice cafe whilst there. Highly recommended if you fancy blowing away a few cobwebs 😊

Peaseblossum22 · 29/11/2022 17:23

Thank you , we have a had a lovely couple of days although ds is knee deep in essays . We took a dozen of his friends for Sunday lunch and now just waiting for a few for bubbly and cake.

Dh and I have also had a nice trip down memory lane including a lunchtime drink in the Dun Cow which was dh favourite haunt 30 years ago and me Xmas shopping In Mugwump which is one of the few shops to have survived the 30 years . The Xmas lights were switched on on Sunday so that’s nice too .
