DS's 2nd year Viaduct house was through Harringtons.

@red4321 @KingscoteStaff Thanks. I'm hoping that as neither of you have said PM that there is nothing too bad. Can't believe the rent is more than a maximum loan. Ouch!

Fruitygal · 03/11/2022 21:21

DD signed in something this week couple with a few properties found through an older sister of a flat mate who’s also at Durham. Think it’s £160-165 without bills. Looks fine. Hoping all ok £25 more than I was hoping for based on my sons weekly rents plus a dollop for inflation

EwwSprouts · 03/11/2022 21:31

@Fruitygal Hello! Glad she also has something sorted now. DS is £200pw with bills included even TV licence. Looks okay condition online but has the delight of bathroom off the kitchen.

Fruitygal · 03/11/2022 21:36

My oldest had the bathroom kitchen set up twice. This one DD has signed is 8 - 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets?!? I think.

EwwSprouts · 03/11/2022 21:44

@Fruitygal How is she finding the course? DS seems to be okay though he is fond of a good moan about the chemistry on a Friday afternoon.

Fruitygal · 03/11/2022 21:58

Chemistry isn’t a favourite as she didn’t do a level

EwwSprouts · 03/11/2022 22:02

@Fruitygal Snap!

red4321 · 04/11/2022 05:45

Apart from copious amounts of paperwork, Harringtons have been fine so far.

Yes my son's one room in a house in Gilesgate (which currently has no windows..) is costing more than double our monthly mortgage payment. Which seems slightly mad.

barbarabourbon · 04/11/2022 07:19

DD is considering Durham for next year, and most of the colleges seem to imply they will accept returners. Is that not the case, or are your DC choosing not to go back into halls?

Benjispruce4 · 04/11/2022 07:45

Most students DON’T go back to halls @barbarabourbon .

SpamhappyTootsie · 04/11/2022 08:03

Halls do have limited spaces for returners. Whether the private accom problems will see demand rise remains to be seen.
There's about 1/5 of the rooms for years 2-4 at DS'S Hill college iirc. I may be wrong and it's a lower number, but there is a specific block for them.

EwwSprouts · 04/11/2022 08:39

@red4321 Good to know about Harringtons, thanks. I hope from the way you've phrased it he will get a window.

@barbarabourbon I'm shocked at the cost of a rented room but I would guess the cost of a room in university accommodation will also soar due to energy costs etc(all round the country).

red4321 · 04/11/2022 09:18

Good to know about Harringtons, thanks. I hope from the way you've phrased it he will get a window.

I'm hoping so! His group have committed to paying £51,000 in rent for a property they've seen no photos of and is currently a building site. Quite the leap of faith...

Which area is your son's house in? Glad he has something sorted.

red4321 · 04/11/2022 11:52

Sorry for a really stupid question. If they're renting a house, presumably the students have to provide stuff like an ironing board, vacuum cleaner, pots and pans etc?

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 04/11/2022 12:23

Normally those will be provided @red4321 but students might want to bring along their own pans etc. if they want to use really nice ones.

red4321 · 04/11/2022 12:30

Thank you, that's very helpful.

HighlandCowbag · 04/11/2022 17:51

Dd found a place, on the viaduct but £184 pppw! Absolutely extortionate.

Benjispruce4 · 04/11/2022 18:12

It’s ridiculous. DD’s 5 bed house was £120pppw in 2020/21 excl bills.

Benjispruce4 · 04/11/2022 18:13

@red4321 they had to buy their own pots and pans but there was n ironing board. They also had to buy an iron.

Watsername · 04/11/2022 18:55

DS’s group managed to view a house today but they rejected it due to damp :(

HighlandCowbag · 05/11/2022 11:09

It's ridiculous what the landlords are getting away with. The students currently in the property dd gas are paying £40 a week less than what dd will pay. The agent said its because it is vills included and energy costs. So 10k a year then? Also capped at 2.5k energy costs for fair usage. So a load of bollocks.

EwwSprouts · 08/11/2022 08:41

DS happy as he scored his first goal in lacrosse. That is all. 😂

GoldenRuby · 08/11/2022 10:20

Well done mini Sprout!

Watsername · 08/11/2022 17:32

Yay! Well done on the goal!

It looks like DS is sorted for next year’s house now - phew!
