DS has been at preseason training for the past 3 weeks but finally moves into his permanent room today (hurray!)…I think catering also begins so no more having to get creative with just a microwave to work with… on the whole preseason has worked out well for him as he’s had a chance to make a few friends and get settled. I’m going to drive up the rest of his things this weekend so will thankfully miss the “move in” scrum over the 24/25th. It’s all starting to feel very real now!

Fruitygal · 15/09/2022 19:49

Just back from London for second time this week - a work conference all day …. but DD emailed me her dropping off time and date so lovely to know where we stand.

We are Saturday so happy and might book the Thai now

EwwSprouts · 15/09/2022 20:41

First moving in time? (Drums fingers on table)

GoldenRuby · 15/09/2022 20:44

We are Saturday too. Our slot is 1130-12 but I'm not quite sure whether that is the time we have to be at the county hall to get the peninsular permit, or the time they will let us go up to the college. I think we will probably turn up at the county hall at 1115ish and wait if we are too early.

Fruitygal · 15/09/2022 22:00

@EwwSprouts 10am!! Glad I booked the Friday night stay over !

EwwSprouts · 15/09/2022 22:11

Good planning there!

Fruitygal · 15/09/2022 22:30

Booked Friday and Saturday in Airbnb back in august results day as we live along way away. Didn’t dare book in April like some people ….not normally superstitious but after the last two years of ups and downs didn’t want to tempt fate .

have you got a time and date @EwwSprouts

EwwSprouts · 15/09/2022 22:31

Not that I know of but I doubt he's checked his emails.

Fruitygal · 15/09/2022 23:17

Lol 😂 sorry forgot he’s in Spain 🇪🇸

GoldenRuby · 16/09/2022 17:19

We've just been told that she has a small double - so now a mad scramble to get sheets from Dunelm in time. We don't have any spare normal doubles either wise we would send her with those. She is pleased though as there is one room in John's which is famously tiny, not even room for a sink, so it looks like she has swerved that one.

red4321 · 16/09/2022 17:24

My husband's taking my son's things up tomorrow (it's a good four hour drive for us) but making the drive even longer by going to watch him play an away fixture (not too far away thankfully).

Packing without your child there to help and advise has not been a recipe for success... I'll be glad to have all his boxes gone at least.

Fruitygal · 16/09/2022 18:51

Fab news @GoldenRuby

Godsavetheking72 · 16/09/2022 20:11

@red4321 yes packing without them here has been a bit of a challenge - not sure he is going to approve of some of the “homely” touches I have added - DS2 was horrified that I have given him a faux fur throw for his bed! 🤣😂

red4321 · 16/09/2022 20:48

I like the sound of the throw. A lot.

I'm now reconsidering whether the duvet cover he had aged 8 might be rather low-end by comparison but our choice of single covers isn't the best!

Fruitygal · 16/09/2022 21:20

@red4321 if it’s a transformers or Spider-Man duvet cover that will be ace

EwwSprouts · 16/09/2022 22:32

We only had single duvet Spiderman or Scooby Doo. I did tell DS there were far worse things to be known for at university than a Scooby Doo duvet cover but that tipped him into agreeing to a Dunelm trip.

red4321 · 17/09/2022 07:36

I'd like a Scooby Doo duvet cover. I distinctly recall two of my boyfriends at Durham having cutesy cartoon animal duvet covers that can only have been bought by their mums.... Whereas I found a map of the world duvet cover in the charity shop which tied into my degree (cringe).

Buying him a tasteful single duvet cover would feel a bit like cheating. And so the cycle of shame continues.

ByeByeBeebies · 18/09/2022 11:30

My DS starts at St John’s next weekend. Can anyone give any advice? Do the university halls have their own contents insurance or is it something we need purchase? TIA

red4321 · 18/09/2022 12:23

Our college booklet said contents insurance was covered.

Fruitygal · 18/09/2022 13:19

@ByeByeBeebies Hi! I think insurance is covered for things in room but when out and about not covered.

My first ended up in a rain storm with his back pack in first year and computer was broken. so we have cover through home insurance when in the lecture halls and out and about.

what’s your DC studying ?

ByeByeBeebies · 18/09/2022 13:51

Thank you! All the emails are going to DS and in fairness I think he is on top of things. I didn’t think I was a helicopter parent but …

DS is studying physics.

GoldenRuby · 18/09/2022 15:03

@ByeByeBeebies what day/time is your DS moving in? My DD is moving into St Johns on Saturday at 1130. She is studying Combined Honours in Social Science (Anthropology & Geography).

Fruitygal · 18/09/2022 15:06

Never apologise for being a caring parent.

There’s a lot of parents on MN and RL who like to tell you to leave them to it and love a bit of one up man ship when it comes to competitive parental neglect 🤣🤣🤣. My DCs are wildly independent and were largely self sufficient in the catering and cleaning stakes by 14 but still need support with a massive life change like this one. Checking insurance in place leads to a much easier life when they drop their computer in week 3 …

Fruitygal · 18/09/2022 15:10

@ByeByeBeebies DD doing biological science at JS as she loves to cook and didn’t want to end up sharing a bedroom. DD dropping off at 10am Saturday but coming up on Friday as a long journey.

I forgot @GoldenRuby has the same college that’s lovely - do you know about room type etc

lots of anguish for a few people we know as kids don’t have college yet?!?

GoldenRuby · 18/09/2022 15:11

@Fruitygal we know she isn't sharing, no en-suite, with a small double bed, but don't know which building she is based in.
