Is this a sensible list?

My second post tonight. Sorry a bit lost. Son has decided to apply to Oxford to read Maths and application is due on Monday. His choices are ;
1.Oxford
2.Durham or Warwick (still to decide hence my previous post)

  1. Bath
  2. Exeter
  3. Cardiff or Sheffield (still to decide)
Because of the last minute decision re Oxford we have not visited Cardiff or Sheffield. Does this seem like a sensible list ? Please help, we were planning to slowly consider all options but now we have to have the final list by Monday. Any comments gratefully received ,

You don't need to decide yet. Put the form in with just Oxford, to meet their (and I assume the school) deadline, then add the others later.

(Warwick has the edge over Durham for Maths btw.)

sillyrubberduck · 24/09/2021 22:09

Tichi , my understanding is that you need to submit all at once. Is this not the case? That would be great !!

No need to submit all at once! As long as the deadlines (early for Ox, Jan for rest) are met it's fine.

(It's cheaper if you only have one option, so when you add the rest you'll have to pay the difference.)

sillyrubberduck · 24/09/2021 22:22

Oh fabulous, don't mind paying the difference as long as it buys us some more time to visit and decide

My son only put Oxford by the early deadline , he added two others after the half term and another two in December . Saves having to make a rush decision

Warwick is good for maths, so I would favour that over Durham.

And I would also suggest Sheffield over Cardiff.

sillyrubberduck · 24/09/2021 22:51

ItsReally, why Sheffield over Cardiff if you don't mind me asking? These are his 'safe' choices. My son loves his Rugby and Cardiff are in the Bucks league apparently Hmm

Well that’s not choosing Cardiff for maths reasons! Maths grads are very employable so Cardiff or Sheffield won’t make much difference to his prospects. Sheffield is a great city for students. Exeter is quieter and not seen as a university that’s top for science subjects.

Quidity · 25/09/2021 05:57

What about Nottingham or Manchester? Both have strong Maths departments?

Ulelia · 25/09/2021 06:02

If he wants Rugby then Cardiff is a better choice than Sheffield, and Exeter is good also. Maths-wise, the other way round is better, but all are strong enough though.
As previously said, you only have to put Oxford now and can add the others later. I'd recommend putting two now though, as it saves a step later of paying again, which can be confusing for students.
