Glasgow uni accommodation

Hi I’m just posting on the off chance that anyone might be able to help.

My friend’s son has a place at Glasgow uni to start this autumn 21. For various reasons (that aren’t relevant now) he has no accommodation and the halls apparently are full.
He’s a lovely boy but quite shy and reserved so living alone in a private rental would be far from ideal. Does anyone have any bright ideas for a possible solution for them?
None of us are local to Scotland so doing this from a distance. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Glasgow has a lot of student accommodation that are like halls of residence but run by private companies. Sorry, I have no recommendations, but they've sprung up all over and it'd be worth googling to see what's in the vicinity of Glasgow Uni campus.

Ssmiler · 31/08/2021 15:43

Many thanks @altforvarmt. The uni are now trying some of those and have come up blank so far - but we will start googling also. Apparently they are massively oversubscribed this year with many overseas students not getting a halls place.

Yes private student accommodation is best bet now. There's quite a lot of Student Roost and Unite Students private halls in Glasgow so he should look into both of those.
The university is very near an underground stop so if he has to be a bit further away if he can get near an underground station. But also very well served by buses.

Good luck

Ssmiler · 31/08/2021 17:57

Thanks very much @wooliewoo - thanks to the helpful suggestions, we have tried those and many more this afternoon but everything is booked up. The only hope now is something coming up from one of the waiting lists. We may start looking for a private rent now but it wouldn’t be ideal for him to live completely alone

Is there an 'overheard in Glasgow' Facebook page? Students often advertise rooms to share in houses on there.

Ssmiler · 31/08/2021 19:20

Thanks so much @titchy I couldn’t find on “overheard group” but a Glasgow freshers 21/22 one came up so he’s going to join that to see if any others in similar pickle that he could join up with. Thanks for the suggestion

Not helpful but if he deferred the year wound they guarantee him student halls next year?

I'd be tempted to do this if he is shy/quiet. I don't think my DS would of made the friends he has if he's been in accommodation on his own.

MyNewCatIsFab · 01/09/2021 04:06

There are some student flatshares advertising on spareroom.co.uk

Ssmiler · 01/09/2021 09:08

Is your son thinking of deferring @Bigmaw? Or is he going to look for a flat share? My friends son most definitely doesn’t want to defer @Blueskythinking123 - I had thought that might be the best plan but he really does want to get away and get started.
Thanks so much for the right move link @MyNewCatIsFab - I have sent it on to my friend
Thanks everyone - this thread is helpful and even if we have turned nothing up yet it’s good to know that we are exploring all options

Make sure his name is on waiting lists for all uni and private halls. I would also say keep ringing them regularly.
There may well be people pull out of accommodation once they get their timetable. A friend of DD has just pulled out of her university accommodation after getting her timetable and is only in university 1 day per week, test is online.
She lives nearly 2 hrs away so just going to travel for that day. Not Glasgow but another Scottish university.

Most of the Scottish universities are going back with 1m distancing which will force all the bigger lectures online. They should be running tutorials, labs etc as normal but they are now oversubscribed due to the higher grades this year so who knows quite what this year will look like.

Bigmaw · 01/09/2021 22:17

Hi my son definitely won’t defer he has been offered a room in a hall which is a bit far out and is mostly used by vet students so he isn’t keen in the meantime we have texted and emailed all the private halls as well. 🤞something will come up. I have repeatedly emailed Glasgow uni accomodation services

Ssmiler · 01/09/2021 23:17

Yes @Bigmaw go on all the wait lists and as @wooliewoo (thank you) has advised also ring them daily as well as going on the wait lists.

My friends son was also offered a room in paisley but again too far out - but this afternoon following a phone follow up, it looks like he may have got a room from a private hall closer in - so do phone daily as well if you can.

I’ll update again tomorrow with any other info that might be helpful for you

DD has recently graduated and was in Unite halls in Finnieston but there are a lot of private halls in that area.
Otherwise would be Spareroom.

readsalotgirl63 · 02/09/2021 11:00

Don't discount private halls in the City Centre if fairly close to the subway as it's a short ride to Hillhead

Ssmiler · 02/09/2021 11:03

Thanks everyone he’s now sorted

@Bigmaw I’ve sent you a PM
