Some of us have found these threads helpful, so I'm starting a new one to take us through

...end-of-year exams (and parties)

...homecoming for the vacation (and hibernation aestivation for this thread?)

...return in the autumn (and more normal college life?)

Posters old and new welcome to join the discussion. Any tips for finding a summer job?

Oh, and for reference, I have a DS just completing his first year in a small humanity in a tiny college.

My DD uses the one at Parkside. There isn't one for Cambridge students unless your college has one i don't think.

mytortoiseisill · 09/09/2021 19:29

aha! thank you.

mytortoiseisill · 10/09/2021 13:04

Next question - where do students get their bikes?

Malbecfan · 10/09/2021 15:43

@mytortoiseisill I posted this a few pages back. We got DD's uni bike from our local recycling centre in Devon. It cost a whole £8. DH put new tyres and brakes on it so it was roadworthy. She has a nice bike at home so takes the lights & helmet from that. The lock cost around £15. It is a fairly hideous shade of pink - think strawberry milkshake - so no self-respecting thief wants to be seen on it. It's done 4 years so far.

mytortoiseisill · 10/09/2021 18:17

thanks but where do people go in Cambridge itself? That must be a good place to get ropey student bikes.

He has a mountain bike but that's not going anywhere near the UK centre of bicycle theft that is Cambridge :)

chitchattery · 10/09/2021 18:31

Sometimes the colleges sell off bikes that have been left by leaving students but difficult to rely on. My DD sold hers to a student in the year below when she decided to take her good bike from home. It survived three years intact!

Lovecatsanddogs · 10/09/2021 18:43

My DD got a great used bike fully serviced from here.

Great! Thanks.

Sunndowne · 11/09/2021 09:46

Mytortoisisill, there is a,very helpful bike shop very near Girton, just out of town. They seem much more helpful and less expensive than the popular central bookstore by the river where a lot of punting starts off.

Sunndowne · 11/09/2021 09:48

We bought ours from a shop at home, she needed a good bike and put unfashionable paint stripes over it to not be too alluring. Solid Bike has been helpful.

DS1 (C) is disappointed to be given his last choice accommodation for this coming year. He's only just found out.

On the one hand, it's great that the college guarantees accommodation for three years (although have requested fourth years consider living out this year as they've got no space this time).

It's taken this long for the college to allot rooms, most of which are en suite and DS1 assumed his would be too but unfortunately he and the two friends he wanted in his household have all been given the worst possible rooms in the worst block and with shared bathrooms/ toilets.

Both DS1 and one of his friends need en suite for specific reasons but after a whole week emailing the college requesting to swop rooms and offering all the necessary evidence for needing an en suite, (all whilst we were on holiday too), he had no reply at all until last night when finally he got a response - a resounding negative for any room changes.

He's tried to find another student willing to swop with him but so far no good either. The college allowed so many extra students to have places last year that they've just got too many in this cohort but don't seem to have taken into consideration special requests, including his Muslim friend who also need an en suite for religious reasons. Everyone else he knows has got one of the best en suite rooms in the best second year block. So it does feel a bit unfair.

After a rather restricted year as a Fresher last year, given all the Covid related limitations, DS1 had hoped for a better year this time. He's looking on the bright side as best he can - that at least the college is providing accommodation on site but meanwhile, DS2 (O) had already got his top choice, en suite college room allotted last term at O, weeks and weeks ago, whilst DS1 has had to wait until almost the last moment for his own disappointment.

DS1 (C) also still hasn't received his exam feedback from his old DOS (got a new one for this year) which was supposed to come in August and supposed to involve individual online meetings for each student. It's not surprising really though, given how long it took to get essays marked last term but as the new term will be starting shortly, it'd have been better for students to have last term's exam feedback before now, although DS1 was very happy with his results nevertheless.

As usual, DS1 is being as nonchalant as possible about everything and it's me who's rather incensed about his accommodation situation. There's always the chance that another student might still agree a swop as DS1's room is the cheapest in college but rather doubtful.

Do they all pay the same Mutterphore? DD's college does a reverse ballot, so stunning accommodation as a fresher leaves you with a cupboard in year 2, but everyone pays the same. She will spend her final year living out though. Shame she didn't think about that when she applied.

When does everyone go back? 3 weeks today here in time for the arrival of freshers on 4th.

Hoghgyni · 11/09/2021 17:32

Just spotted that you said it was the cheapest. I suppose every cloud....

Malbecfan · 11/09/2021 17:57

@mytortoiseisill You could try this place www.papworthtrust.org.uk/owl-bikes/ as they get great reviews. I passed a bike shop when I was taking DD to her new house but I can't remember its name. It's near Chesterton I think.

@Hoghgyni and @mutterphore the reverse ballot system is how DD's college operates, but costs vary quite widely. She prized value for money over having her own bathroom so shared bathrooms in years 2 & 3. Whilst it was nice to have her own ensuite in year 4, particularly due to Covid, she was not overjoyed by the added costs. She had a lovely room overlooking the court & chapel in year 2 when she was pretty high in the ballot. Nobody liked the Victorian house in the college grounds so she was thrilled to get that in year 3 as it had a property equipped kitchen including a freezer. The bathrooms weren't very nice but DD is a thrifty creature. Because it was due for renovation, she was also allowed to leave belongings in there over the holidays. Yet more silver linings!

mutterphore · 11/09/2021 18:05

@Hoghgyni, I think it's only £3 less per day for having no en suite and he'd rather pay the extra for what he needs. So I don't think anyone will think it's worth swopping, sadly. He thinks he also won't get a better room guaranteed for his third year as it doesn't seem to work like that but at least as far as he knows, he should still be in college for his third year.

DS1 (C) I think goes back three weeks today and DS2 (O) three weeks tomorrow, although he's already been back for a bit to help run the Freshers' pre-term event at his college a little while ago and then back home again.

I can't believe how quickly their first year went by, although with the second term from home, it really didn't feel as if they'd gone away to university at all. I hope things are better for them this year with fewer restrictions.

mutterphore · 11/09/2021 18:12

@Malbecfan, forty years ago at my O college, I had to share two toilets and two baths (no showers in those days at my college) with two corridors of about 10 people I think. I had to get up really early to find a free bathroom at all. So I keep telling DS1 that it could be a lot worse for him. He doesn't know how many people will share the showers and toilets nor are there any photos anywhere for him to check out what his room might be like but we expect he'll have fewer sharing the facilities.

Last year he asked for a mini fridge in his room and to be counted as a household of one so he wouldn't keep being put in isolation if someone in his household tested positive. The college refused both requests however. This year with shared bathroom facilities, I suppose there's an even greater likelihood of being incarcerated in his room if someone in his household tests positive - until he can get a negative test himself, if that's how the college are doing things. I wonder how colleges will work this for the coming term?

HuaShan · 11/09/2021 18:17

DS's college is very egalitarian - no-one at all has an en suite and rooms either have a wardrobe or a wash basin not both! (Have probably outed which college he is at now Blush).
I think it's fair to say he has mixed feelings about going back - he did not have a great first term because of self isolation and lock down and people might remember he chose not to go back in Spring. He is not sharing with anyone he knows this year so it will be a bit like being a fresher all over again but at least knowing what to expect academically. I'm praying he has a better time next term.

HuaShan · 11/09/2021 18:19

@mutterphore hopefully no-one that is double jabbed will need to self isolate as per the rules for the general population (praying)

mutterphore · 11/09/2021 18:27

@HuaShan, yes, I hope colleges go along with the rules for the general population but you just never know.

I really hope your DS has a better time this year. There must be loads of others who barely met anyone in the first year and who would really like to meet others this year. My DCs have got lots of 'connections' through societies and positions of responsibility and both would probably say they've got a few proper friends too but DS1 (C) in particular could still do with meeting more like-minded people.

Maybe your DS could join more societies and/or help to run some and that way, have a role in a group that would almost accidentally give him connections with people. He's done absolutely brilliantly academically of course and I hope he really enjoys his second year on that level too.

Hoghgyni · 11/09/2021 19:31

Do they get a rail or just drawers instead of a wardrobe? I think DD has struck lucky this year. She has a corner room on attic floor, but that means she has a bedroom area with 2 windows, a study area with another window & an ensuite. She might not think she's as lucky when she's carrying her luggage up into the roof, but she has a 39 week lease so once she has it all there it can stay put.

houselikeashed · 11/09/2021 19:59

Anyone recently had a room in the Wolfson building at St Hilda's, Oxford?
Wondering what we'll have to buy...

HuaShan · 11/09/2021 21:38

You would laugh @Hoghgyni, there is no clothes rail or chest of drawers! We bought a clothes rail after the experience he had staying there for interview. There are only small locker type cubby holes built into the shelf storage. It is basic! We have said he can live out next year even though he is religious stay.

HuaShan · 11/09/2021 21:39

That should read eligible to stay!
