Some of us have found these threads helpful, so I'm starting a new one to take us through

...end-of-year exams (and parties)

...homecoming for the vacation (and hibernation aestivation for this thread?)

...return in the autumn (and more normal college life?)

Posters old and new welcome to join the discussion. Any tips for finding a summer job?

Oh, and for reference, I have a DS just completing his first year in a small humanity in a tiny college.

DS doesn't seem to know when he will get the results of his first year exams. He thinks he'll be having an end-of-term meeting with his DoS to discuss what he plans to study next year, so hopefully he'll have his results by then, to inform his decisions.

Hoghgyni · 03/07/2021 14:35

Are DoS particularly a Cambridge thing? DD doesn't have one or any form of pastoral tutor. It makes things like Covid very tricky, as she has to contact tutors for all 3 subjects and has no central point of contact.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/07/2021 14:46

DoS is cantabrian for 'tutor', really. Or main academic tutor - dd has had quite a few over the years, many postgrads but specialists in the relevant branch of engineering.
There is also a personal tutor who is a fellow of the college but from a different department.

Malbecfan · 03/07/2021 16:24

Hello again! Stupidly I took my work laptop which didn't have my MN login and I couldn't remember the details, so sorry for the radio silence from me.

@Cliff1975 I'm rooting for your and your DS. As others have said, it does sound like a specific organisation issue and it is certainly worth further investigation.

@goodbyestranger, like your C DS, DD1 has only had to self-isolate on her return in April for a day and a bit until she returned a negative test.

DD told us that a lot of the recent SI has come about because loads of them went rowing. They all dumped their bags together with their phones inside & went out on the water. One tested positive later but because all their phones were in close proximity, the app assumed the owners were too and pinged them all so they had to SI. DD doesn't turn her bluetooth on, and in any case had a football match that day so wasn't affected.

Anyway, the graduation ceremony was amazing! We watched students processing from another college in the morning and met DD, bf and his parents outside Kings. After coffee with an old uni friend of mine, DH & I had a siesta back at our hotel whilst DD got ready. We met at her college where she was all gowned up and having photos with her NatSci friends then we went inside the court (onto the hallowed turf) for more photos. Parents were politely asked to leave around 30 minutes later so they could organise the procession. We walked round to West Road and they processed past us then we were ushered into the Concert Hall and sat socially distanced. There were some brief chats where the ceremony was explained and the Bursar and Alumni guy talked about what next then we watched the live feed on a massive screen.

Students lined up in groups of 3 and were called forward. The Master of DD's college said the Latin stuff, students bowed or curtsied and the Master said something like "well done Fred", "congratulations Sophie" to each one. We had a much better view that we would have done squashed in the Senate House. After it was over, the students went to collect their photos and we were called up in groups for the picnic. We were with DD's pastoral tutor and some of her friends' parents. We sat outside at socially distanced tables & chairs chatting, then the grads came back, each was given a bottle of champagne by the college and everyone had a boxed picnic. It was really lovely. After that, we went for wine & tapas with DD, bf and his parents who seem as nice as bf so it was a great day. The sun shone for most of it, the concert hall was thankfully air-conditioned and we had as good a ceremony as we could have hoped for.

Today, the rain held off for the packing ritual. I am ready to throttle DH who took way too much stuff for 2 nights. Who the hell needs a bloody fleece in July? The car already had his crap before adding all DD's. We have finally after a tortuous time on the M3 and A303 arrived home & unpacked. DD2 thoughtfully provided us with tea and helped ferry the junk upstairs. DD1 should be here on Monday with bf.

Now I'm going to see if I can watch the live stream again & try to record some of it. My dad watched it but said he couldn't hear it...

ErrolTheDragon · 03/07/2021 16:35

Glad you had such a lovely day Malbec!

We've had a nice video chat with a begowned and hooded DD and her BF, and some good photos (she and friends are going to collate more from their phones later).
The livestream seemed to be going well, DD lined up in the first 3 from her college, first one went up ... then a glitch. DD and the girl after didn't show up except the back of first girl walking off morphed into being shorter with longer hair. We're hoping there may have been a more robust recording not reliant on WiFi/internet but don't know.

But anyway, dd had a lovely formal last night and an enjoyable day today which is the main thing.

ofteninaspin · 03/07/2021 16:54

My understanding is that DD's Oxford tutor is meant to provide both academic and pastoral guidance but in reality contact is minimal. DD had no contact with her tutor throughout either of the two terms that were spent at home in second and third year due to the pandemic. One of the tutors DD has tutorials with at another college has a more pastoral approach and checked in on DD during term time but obviously couldn't influence anything at DD's own college.

ofteninaspin · 03/07/2021 17:00

Lovely to hear of enjoyable graduation days malbec and errol despite any technical and packing glitches.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/07/2021 19:42

That does sound wonderful Malbec and Errol. You must both be very proud :) I hope that the missing coverage appears though Errol.

pantjog · 03/07/2021 22:12

Sorry haven’t caught up on thread…

Quick question: do people give their bedder/scout a cash or other gift at the end of the year? DH used to 30 years ago. I didn’t, too skint. DD says it’s outdated and patronising! Views?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/07/2021 22:30

dd gives a thank you card and some chocolate. She's always had a good, friendly relationship with her bedders. I don't think it is outdated, I think it's lovely to value the people who have helped make your life easier.

Ironoaks · 03/07/2021 23:18

Before he came home at Christmas, DS bought a box of chocolates for the bedder and a tub of individually wrapped chocolates for the porters to share. He didn't buy them anything at the end of this term, but did write thank you cards to each of his supervisors. He is a bit hit-and-miss with that sort of thing.

JulesJules · 04/07/2021 07:20

DD's household clubbed together for their scout I think.

goodbyestranger · 04/07/2021 09:16

That's really great news about your DS pantjog - promise for a new chapter next year!

So pleased you had such a lovely day in Cambridge Malbecfan :) (and so pleased to not be on the M3 and A303. It's almost as though the entire country has temporarily decamped to Devon).

SandyBayley · 04/07/2021 10:08

@Malbecfan - so pleased you had a good day. Little stories of normality lift my spirits.

DS1 is grumpy. Still has to SI despite a negative PCR and daily negative LFTs. He's on day 8. He should have been at the Varsity Rugby match in Leicester today - which is still on I believe.

Unescorted · 04/07/2021 10:39

For those of you with under 30's in Oxford surge testing is underway

I suspect under reporting happened as kids were scrambling home last weekend - those with symptoms didn't order PCRs / do LF while the rest of their households were picked up / got back to home countries. As a precaution DD & I are SI as she was in contact with people who have now taken ill.

Malbecfan · 04/07/2021 11:20

Thank you all. @ErrolTheDragon have you tried watching the stream again? My dad claimed he couldn't hear it (but he was watching it on a PC from 250 miles away and his IT skills are weak) so I watched it again and it was lovely the 2nd time. I think it's available for 2 months.

All the talk of LFTs has reminded me I need to do mine in prep for tomorrow. One class is expected back in school, another is SI for most of this week. When I post my result, I will check up on what else has kicked off since yesterday morning. I hope you all have a good day.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/07/2021 12:35

It's still the same. The filming company have said they'll see if they've got some other footage or stills and send them to DD.

mutterphore · 04/07/2021 18:13

Just catching up on this thread, so sorry if I miss anyone out. Cliff, I'm glad your DS can stay on at his course and get more support and I hope his second year is better. Covid hasn't helped at all and I'm sure he'd not have struggled quite so much if everything had been face to face and his problems picked up sooner. Very good luck to him!

Errol, I'm sorry you haven't yet been able to access the video footage of your DD's graduation ceremony but hope they'll find another bit of film with her on. In any case, huge congratulations to her!

Heybells, that's very good news about your DS's 2:1 and further studies now possible.

Pantjogs, very well done to your DS for getting through this year - if I haven't said this before. It's been a really tough one and he's done great!

Malbec, I'm really glad your DDs graduation ceremony was a good experience and as close to normal as they can possibly make it at present. You must be hugely proud of her!

Sandy and others with DCs in isolation, that's gutting! Terrible timing just when the term's ending and some possible events were available. I hope he and others are 'doing time' as calmly as possible. Two weeks each of SI during the third week of their first term was the worst party of the first year for my DSs. They've been very very lucky not to be imprisoned again so far.

We've had a brilliant UK cycling holiday - cycling about 150 miles off-road and DS1 and DS2 are now settling back in at home, doing bits of work for their second years, planning activities across the summer and keeping in touch with new friends. I hope everyone else can enjoy the summer and well done to all - whatever year group - for getting through a pandemic year at Oxbridge.

Ironoaks · 05/07/2021 15:49

DS is attending an online Q&A about the subject he thinks he'll like to take next year; he says it's quite informative and helpful.

His end of term meeting with the DoS is later this afternoon.

DS has almost made the decision but would like to know his exam results before committing.

ofteninaspin · 06/07/2021 15:16

DS (C) is taking a similar approach Ironoaks. He really would like to know his exam results before committing to his choices!

It's a First for DD (O) in Part II Finals and and so onwards into the fourth year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/07/2021 16:34

Well done to your dd often Grin that's splendid news!

dd has managed to rearrange her second vaccination to the 8 week mark if that is useful for anyone. She couldn't get a cambridge site so booked it further afield.

mutterphore · 06/07/2021 18:26

Often, congratulations to your clever DD! Hope she has a great celebration.

Malbecfan · 06/07/2021 18:37

@ofteninaspin that's brilliant news! Congratulations to your DD!

I understand people's DC wanting to know their exam results before choosing their subjects. Remember to use their college parents for advice as they almost invariably know people studying that option even if they didn't do it themselves.

Ironoaks · 06/07/2021 18:55

@ofteninaspin - congratulations to your DD!

Hoghgyni · 06/07/2021 19:48

Excellent news Often.
