Apologies if I've done this wrong! I seemed to have filled up the last thread, hopefully the abbreviated title is ok!

DD seems to have a lot on in comparison to some of your DC's. Perhaps because it is a 6th Form of a school, and quite a small one?

Anyway, last assessments this week. Then a couple of weeks off. Then back in for optional days, I think I mentioned before, they are doing uni prep days, cooking days, sports days, etc etc. Then they have a school organised tea party, additionally a leavers do, then DD's boyfriend has invited her to his leavers do, and then, finally, they have prize giving which we will go to. Not the usual whole school effort at the local theatre, but just 6th form this year, and on the lawn, with Prosecco and Pimms (sounds very much better in my humble opinion).

Parker231 · 17/05/2021 17:07

Leaving day is sad - DT’s ready to move on but I felt it was the end of an era - they’d been at the same school from 4-18 and it was a big part of our lives.

@BigWoollyJumpers - the pimms and Prosecco sounds good - my type of celebration - have a good time.

chopc · 17/05/2021 17:53

If your DD was a DS I would have thought they were in the same school!

DS has three weeks including half term off the some schools organised activities followed by leavers traditions including their leavers ball. Sadly no date for DS but that is OK as plenty of boys with no dates

chopc · 17/05/2021 17:54

@SATSmadness I really feel for your DD. However I am equally confident that all will be ok in the end for her.

That all sounds lovely @BigWoollyJumpers My dd is still going in once a week for her LAMDA lesson, she is doing Grade 8 in July. I THINK they have some sort of leavers' thing but don't know any details or if parents are invited or not! Then an outdoor prom in July which I really hope will go ahead.

My youngest is in Year 9 so a few years to go at school. I've been taking them both to school during Covid but the arguments between them in the morning have been horrendous. It was joy taking just one child to school this morning.

Going back a bit in the conversation: I don’t think anyone needs to fear going to a lesser university for engineering. Ie not Imperial or Oxbridge. In fact the latter two are not necessarily the best at producing engineers who actually work in engineering. There are plenty of universities where a MEng would be great on the cv and it’s not that competitive to get into at some truly great universities. There isn’t really any great need to plan strategically or take 2 years doing it.

I can see for the ultra clever, aiming for just a tiny number of universities could work but for the vast majority it is risky to only think Oxbridge, Imperial or LSE will do. The majority of bright dc do have to choose strategically and often it’s a case of understanding Leeds or Sheffield are great too. Just not for the ultra high achievers here on MN.
@ClarasZoo we have 4 dentists (I include them in medics). PM me if need any advice.
Thank you - I will do (tomorrow). Very kind of you..

goodbyestranger · 17/05/2021 19:28

SATSmadness and fairisledog are your DC re-applying to Oxbridge Medicine?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/05/2021 07:14

This is disappointing - and so many top universities referred to here.

goodbyestranger · 18/05/2021 07:51

It also says it's about cost cutting which will be very compelling for most unis. Unless the pressure for fee reductions becomes even greater than the pressure to save money on in person lectures.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/05/2021 09:08

Makes my blood boil that they are making excuses already. Meanwhile cinemas are open and I have tickets to a full house James Blunt concert at the Royal Albert Hall in early July.

That’s madness! Maybe it’s worst case scenario and they will rethink come the autumn. Isn’t the plan for all adults to be vaccinated by then?

chopc · 18/05/2021 09:56

Do you think something like a petition to parliament would help? I don't think they have budged on their stance in any of the other petitions.

As a health care worker the reason I have been working overtime helping the vaccination drive is not just to keep the vulnerable safe but so that my kids can get their lives back ......... It is so frustrating what the universities are saying. It's good to have an online plan B but plan A should be normality. Even international students are looking forward to coming and would go through the quarantine (well the ones I know anyway)

LoonvanBoon · 18/05/2021 10:53

DT1 is going to Leeds and has signed the Leeds petition. I'm particularly concerned that some universities, including Leeds, are already committing to online exams. Surely these are much later in the year and there's absolutely no need to be making a decision now?

On the other thread (the next year online one) I definitely got the impression that covid is being used as an excuse to a accelerate a move to online learning that was planned anyway, and it's that that really pisses me off. I'm sympathetic to concerns about large lectures and safely (depending on what happens, variants etc.) but sneaking in permanent cost-cutting measures by the back door isn't honest to students.

There might well be a discussion to be had about how effective lectures are, and teaching methods more generally, but that should be had openly, consulting with students, not hidden under the 'due to covid' label.

And if that's the direction things are moving in, universities really need to rethink some of their accommodation. So many rooms in modern blocks are absolutely tiny, and expecting students (especially humanities students, in practice) to sit in them staring at a screen for hours on end is just crap.

Parker231 · 18/05/2021 11:08

My nephew is the US is back to Uni in September as normal. Everyone has to have had their vaccinations in order to return.

Jahebejrjr · 18/05/2021 11:12

Continuing online learning is atrocious. I am pleased my DC’s university isn’t named.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2021 11:20

Where can you find the named universities?
Jahebejrjr · 18/05/2021 11:27

Universities are listed in the article. I hope that’s the exhaustive list.

LoonvanBoon · 18/05/2021 11:57

I can't see a list as such in the article - it just mentions a number of universities who presumably have already stated their plans. I can't see any reason to think they'll be the only ones. Other universities have already been mentioned in the other thread.

LoonvanBoon · 18/05/2021 12:01

A quick look at Bristol's website, for example, says the same as for Leeds - f2f for seminars etc. but online for large lectures.

opoponax · 18/05/2021 12:54

Yes @LoonvanBoon my DS had a Medicine offer from Bristol and they have written to him saying online for large lectures.

chopc · 18/05/2021 12:57

I think from second year on being online for large lectures is fine. But it is utterly miserable for students who don't get to meet people on their course..........

chopc · 18/05/2021 12:58

And last years cohort .......

SATSmadness · 18/05/2021 13:07

@goodbyestranger

I don't think my nerves would stand it ! (but obviously it's not up to me)

What's your opinion on Oxbridge re-applications for the same course ?

looptheloopinahulahoop · 18/05/2021 13:15
This is disappointing - and so many top universities referred to here.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-57150071
I can see the logic with lectures, where you can record them and let students watch them at their leisure, but I hope it doesn't spill over into seminar/tutorials etc (and it will also depend on what course, I am looking at this from the perspective of my course where I only had about 4 lectures a week plus about another 8 hours of small group classes).

But if teachers can work in classrooms of 30 unvaccinated kids, I don't know why lecturers can't work in lecture theatres of 100-200 vaccinated adults.
