Advice for Dentistry

Wriggleout · 06/04/2021 15:41

My DD 13 is keen on becoming a dentist. I know it's early on and she may change her mind, but she has been mentioning for the past few years. I read that St John's Ambulance is possibly a good thing to do.... but she is not convinced. Does anyone have any advice on prep for Dentistry? Also on subjects, grades, courses to start her thinking about the future. She's clever and conscientious, so no worries there.

Hi @Wriggleout I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will come along but I have a DS studying medicine and a DD vet medicine so there is some overlap.
Work experience in dental practices is needed both general and orthodontics, my DS did SJA and it helped with people skills.

UKAT will be required and Medify is good practice online.
A levels Chemistry, Maths, Biology are reliable choices and neither of mine did EPQ.

This book will provide a good overview I bought the other versions.

I have loads of buddies who are dentists. One thing worth thinking about is that involves being good with patients and with your hands, one of my friends did an a level in design tech which must have helped.

Yes @katienana
This could be playing a musical instrument or knitting, needlework etc

Thank you. Yes, she plays the trumpet and is a very good baker and loves decorating it. She's choosing fine art as an option. I didn't think those things would be relevant, but makes perfect sense now
