Oxbridge Aspirants 2022

Hi not too sure if there is another thread started as could not see one. May be waaaaaay too early but wondered if any other parents out there who have a child applying for next year?

Dd would like to apply to Cambridge to study History and Politics in 2022. She is at a state A-level college doing History, Politics and English Literature. I have never had to push her towards studying she is a very motivated child and wants to give Cambridge a shot (a very long shot as we know!). Her GCSE results were good but not top notch (9s in History, English Language and literature and the rest 7s and 6s) so not sure how much this will affect her. So far her A-level essays are coming out at As and A* and those are her predicted grades so if she continues on track that should meet the criteria.

She reads a lot of extra curricular stuff and has a genuine passion for politics, has joined the local Labour party youth group. She has applied for the summer programme at Cambridge & is part of an Oxbridge group that the college puts together.

It feels like a such a long shot and the stats of actually getting in are very low only 18% of applicants successful in 2019 so I am trying to tell her not to get her hopes up whilst actually supporting her!

She is my first born so I have never been through this before. Anybody else out there? Would be lovely to hear from you.

Application has been sent ! Another one for Bath too as an alternative choice too.. looks fab

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/10/2021 10:52

Ha laughing at your cat having helped with the photo submission @Piggywaspushed. What is it about cats and keyboards?

DN pressed send on his application last week. Not sure if he's put all five choices on his form but believe Durham, Leeds and Bristol all feature! This is for MFL.

Best of luck to everyone.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 10/10/2021 11:22

@Piggywaspushed

Warwick is amazing for maths!

We only have three choices atm : visiting Bath and Sheffield at half term as I couldn't do our booked Bath break in the summer hols (Covid joy).

DS already had offers from the two other universities (York and Birmingham)! One of those will probably be insurance of eh gets a Cambridge offer, or main choice if he doesn't, although much procrastination occurring over Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bath. they literally all want AAB/ ABB.

Fab that he has offers already! Dd hasn't had any response yet from any of her choices, she's very impatiently looking daily 😄

ProggyMat · 10/10/2021 11:31

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango has your DD had any ‘confirmation of receipt of application’ emails?
DD submitted on Friday and UCL confirmed receipt early hours yesterday.

VikingNorthUtsire · 10/10/2021 13:04

I thought they weren't supposed to offer until after the January deadline?

Gizmo98765 · 10/10/2021 13:06

@Geamhradh DS going for similar choices but different subjects Cambridge, Durham, St Andrews, Lancaster and York.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/10/2021 13:08

I thought they weren't supposed to offer until after the January deadline? That's definitely not true. DS (not Oxbridge applicant) submitted his UCAS as per the school-imposed deadline (early December) and had all five offers by the end of the month.

DD submitted her application last week for Maths at Cambridge, then I think maths and physics at St Andrews, Warwick, Durham, Manchester (I think it's maths and physics except for Cambridge where she will take the maths and

Genegenieee · 10/10/2021 13:50

...physics option in 1st year. She's had acknowledgements so far.

Not at all. I think applicants are meant not to be disadvantaged by their date of application - so unis need to be offering identical applicants in October or January in the same way. I'm not sure that quite worked last year with the late announcement of A level cancellations but normally I assume it does.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 11/10/2021 11:03

With this thread filling up I have started a new thread. I lurk a lot but have found it most useful to read all of your helpful posts.

Slightly annoyed with them as its cutting it fine and DD was under the impression it had been submitted. God knows why so many people need to see it but maybe thats always the way?! I am clueless as never been through this before.

@FlemCandango - my son is applying to Worcester college too and we also visited Warwick on Saturday and loved it. He’s also applying to imperial and St Andrews, then either Edinburgh or bath. Just submitted Oxford for now

I am a newbie to this Oxbridge business. My daughter has applied to Cambridge to do education with english and drama. Have any of you ladies on here got any experience of the course/ how competitive it is to get an offer? My daughter goes to a private school which has been good for her on many levels but maybe now has reduced her chances of an offer. I wish I’d had a crystal ball 17 years ago!
