Fingers crossed for those final offers coming in!

Hope no one minds me starting the new thread...

@IsThisNameTaken you and me both 😊. Year 11 last day and I'm all emotional. We do grow to love them.

That is so lovely!

redtulip12 · 22/05/2021 10:35

Congratulations @IsThisNameTaken don't some of the uni's leave it late!! Great idea going to view them in half term. We did day trips to the two she was choosing between which helped.

DD finished a week ago so has been sleeping, working and sorting through all her books/notes into piles to shred and piles to keep (nothing will be shredded until after results day!)

She is being positive and wants to start getting Uni organised. She has a crate that we are gradually going to fill. So far it contains a pretty veg peeler from Lidl and a dishmatic from poundland 🤣. Has anyone seen any useful lists of what we should start collecting for her?

LaLaFlottes · 22/05/2021 11:12

@redtulip12 there is a Facebook page called “wiwikau” (what I wish I knew about university) and they also have a website which I think has a forum section about what to take.

Also here on Mumsnet there is a list that looks quite good:

www.mumsnet.com/teenagers/university-essentials-checklist#menu

Have fun filling the crate!! DD won’t entertain doing anything until after results, but hopefully - fingers crossed - if all goes well we will have to quickly get her organised!

MaddieElla · 22/05/2021 12:08

Same here @LaLaFlottes, it will be a mad rush from results day to leaving for Uni to get everything DD needs. We definitely have the "just in case" mentality going on. 😬

I second WIWIKAU. Some really useful tips on there although I do have the page hidden so it doesn't come up in my news feed. I just pop on every now and then.

That Mumsnet list is excellent!

Thank you @LaLaFlottes that is so helpful.

opoponax · 22/05/2021 13:25

Thank you @LaLaFlottes. Great info. I do like a list!

WithIcePlease · 22/05/2021 14:37

I think this caught out some of the interviewers that so few offers were given in some places. An interviewer told DD that she should seriously consider accepting a place there and that he thought she would fit in really well, she was just the sort of student they wanted and then told her the features of the city he thought she would enjoy in some detail! She was rejected 2 months later 😂

bimkom · 27/05/2021 14:26

So we are done. Final book return tomorrow and that is it (although they are doing something optional towards the end of June). Now the waiting game begins I guess.

opoponax · 27/05/2021 14:35

We are done too. DS finished on Tuesday and DD finished her GCSEs yesterday. It feels a bit surreal having them at home actually relaxing. Meanwhile DS and I are both feeling exhausted but still working of course. We are doing some Uni visits next week before DS makes his final decision. It's starting to feel quite real now!

opoponax · 27/05/2021 14:36

Sorry meant DH and I are both exhausted...I get muddled up with all my "Ds"!

LaLaFlottes · 27/05/2021 16:03

@bimkom @opoponax
Glad to hear you’re all done Smile. DD is too and it’s lovely to see her relaxing.

Sunbelievable · 27/05/2021 17:21

DD is done too with exams today, but she's staying at (boarding) school until July doing DofE and sports matches and things. All the fun bits of school and none of the academic work 😆 Sounds fab tbh. Only thing is she is missing out on local jobs...

ljmutti · 28/05/2021 17:59

DD finished school yesterday. How are you all coping with post assessment? Feeling bit tensed now still for no reason. Are you all doing anything fun any ideas to keep DD occupied ?

MaddieElla · 28/05/2021 18:09

DD is full on working at the pharmacy most days to save money. She passed her driving test yesterday so we are car hunting and it's really helped take her mind off the wait for results.

We don't have plans for holidays but she does turn 18 in June so we have lots planned. Hopefully time will pass quickly but at the same time I don't want to think about the fact she only has 4 months left at home. Sad

you must be so so proud. Working in pharmacy? so cool My DD is just catching up on her sleep , she seems so worn out, she will start taking her driving lesson from next week. I just snuggle next to her to take in the baby smell. I try not to think she will be leaving soon, makes me anxious and sad.
opoponax · 28/05/2021 18:32

Congratulations on the driving test @MaddieElla Star and good luck with the car hunting. Lots to look forward to with your DD's birthday celebrations too.

DS was lucky to get his test done last November just before we went back into lockdown and he's got a little car and loves the freedom. He's told us he is driving to Bristol for the day this weekend with a couple of friends who also have offers. I'll be on tenterhooks until he's back! Hmm

MaddieElla · 28/05/2021 18:58

I am incredibly proud of how she's worked through this whole pandemic. I for one wanted to hide at home but she was out there every day. She's a better human than me. Grin

Yes, sleep! Lots going on here too and it's very much needed. It is a sad and anxious feeling isn't it, to know they'll be leaving soon. But we have supported them on this rollercoaster journey and now they start the rest of their lives. I'm more excited at the moment but I'm sure that will pass closer to the time.

Ahh @opoponax it's exciting but terrifying isn't it?! It's great he's doing the things young people are supposed to do but I am so with you on worrying until he's back. They are so capable though, every one of our young people. DDs test was supposed to be in January but we all know what happened then...I can't imagine she'll be brave enough to drive as far as your DS. Grin

@MaddieElla it's amazing how quickly their confidence builds with the driving. He's been driving himself to school every day since they went back in March and that's helped. At first I would get him to text me when he'd arrived safely until DH told me I had to get a grip! Grin

MaddieElla · 28/05/2021 20:08

Haha I can see me doing exactly the same!

That reminds me, how does one turn on Find My iPhone 🤣🤣

DS has been volunteering a bit more with St Johns - they have opened a mass vaccination centre right near us as of a few weeks ago, which makes it much more convenient. And the places where he had done his previous shifts were not that busy, but this one really is Smile - so he is enjoying it much more and did another shift on Thursday. And the LAMDA exam that he was supposed to do half a year ago is now back on in July, so he is practicing for that. So not really a lot of relaxing here - and then Monday we are off to see Nottingham and Sheffield. But it is good, fun busy.

opoponax · 28/05/2021 21:11

Yes DS has got two jobs lined up for the summer and is still doing his volunteering because he enjoys it. Lots of social stuff with friends too. I've got a feeling the summer is going to fly by but it is so good to see them doing the normal things that young people do after being locked up for so long. I think it's better if they don't have too much time to dwell on A Level results. It will be the same outcome whether they worry about it or not.

How many driving lessons roughly needed for automatic ? Paying 28 pounds per hour and have to book two hours slot every time. Is this normal?
