@Jenthefredo how strange

Also how come no accommodation needed for first year? Is he planning on staying at home?
Hi,
Yes, for the 1st year.
Many reasons tbh...not least potential further lockdown this winter, (his firm choice did NOT cover itself in glory last year...) and he's very keen on a semester abroad in his 2nd year and wants to save his money for that.
He is aware he will have to work at forging friendships and intends on joining societies and sports clubs etc
My feeling is that he will be based at home in Y1, spend some of Y2 abroad and hopefully find some like minded people to live with in Y3...but who knows?
He's always been someone who does things at his pace and I can't see this being different :)
However, that being said, I've made clear of he changes his mind re: living on campus we'll figure it out. He only gets basic maintenance loan so we would have to top him up.

@Rosieredapples fingers crossed for your DS. On a positive note the overall grade assessment will be based on a wider that just that exam presumably? And sometimes an exam that someone feels went terribly proves not to be the case - a few years back now when we still had AS levels DS1 thought a particular exam had been a complete disaster; turned out to be the complete opposite. Hope your DS can try to stay positive through all this.

Rosieredapples · 08/05/2021 15:55

@Revengeofthepangolins
The didn't think of that re October. Thanks.

Rosieredapples · 08/05/2021 15:58

@boys3 Thanks for the positivity, he is back to revising today and trying to put it behind him. He has two exams this coming week and then another three the week after.
He needs to concentrate on doing aswell as he can in the other exams.
I just hope there is some flexibility re grades and Uni's.

boys3 · 08/05/2021 16:01

But...his 6th form are insisting y13 attend until june 18th!!

@Jenthefredo what are they are planning on having them all do until then? particularly if all the aspects the school are going to use as the basis for the grade assessments have been completed. Having an implied threat that attendance or not during that period could affect their grades is unacceptable - although my experience of boy post or their transmission of messages from school is that it is not ever always 100% reliable.

😁 I know what you mean but no... It was in the last newsletter so its definitely official I have found out today that ofsted are in next week... Hmmmmm
Jenthefredo · 08/05/2021 17:04

Curriculum done
Coursework done
Assessments done
I'm utterly baffled tbh

boys3 · 08/05/2021 19:53

Wracking my brain; admittedly not a huge amount to wrack; but am struggling with the rationale to keep Y13 going given once all assessments etc complete.

I suppose if a very significant percentage are heading off to Uni and parts of the A level curriculum have been missed and all those going are also aiming to do degree subjects where those missed A level elements could be important then there might be a rationale for that. But surely basic common sense would suggest that would be an optional offer, for very specific subjects, and not require full time attendance?

Really struggling to see any benefit from keeping them all coming in for no obvious (not to me at least) reason.

chopc · 08/05/2021 20:32

My DS has two weeks off school whilst the teachers get the data together. He will still be going into school for cricket etc as will other people ...... because they genuinely love being at school and have missed so much time together

Jenthefredo · 08/05/2021 22:05

boys3
I totally get that a % of the cohort will benefit from being in college but surely they know who that cohort are?
(LAC, those with an EHCP etc...)
I'm quite glad some of you are as baffled as I am!
I can only - cynic that I am - think its to do with the ofsted visit next week

MarchingFrogs · 08/05/2021 22:12

DS2 finishes on the 26th, with three days of 'fun' activities. Mostly outdoors, it sounds like, from what he has said, so I just hope it doesn't rain...

boys3 · 08/05/2021 22:40

DS3 finished yesterday. Final assessments - effectively mini exams - over the next two weeks. And that’s it. They have a prom scheduled in July, and a leavers bbq end May / early June.

Slightly strange feeling with the last DS finishing school. No more white shirts to iron though. And the next phase of further expanding culinary skills to start.

Longtimenewsee · 09/05/2021 08:25

I’m with you @boys - my youngest dc finishes school on Friday. I have had at least one dc in school for the last 20 years. I was thinking this yesterday as I added money to dcs lunch account for the last time. I deffo won’t miss any of the admin tasks or being essentially the point of call for anything ‘school’. Youngest Dc moved schools for 6th form so no particular attachment formed either particularly in covid times) . Onwards! Smile

DD has been on study leave since Easter Hmm. So basically only going in for the "assessment opportunities", remember we can't call them exams Grin, and the odd optional revision lesson. She has literally only had 3 weeks of school this year, and one of the those weeks was pre-Easter assessments.

They are officially completed with assessments before half term, then have a couple of weeks "off", but then they are also invited to various days of fun stuff. Uni workshops, sports, cooking, that kind of thing, and then a final prize giving early July, and a couple of leavers parties with other local schools. At least there will be something nice to look forward to after these weeks of uncertainty and grind.

I'm glad some schools are doing nice fun things for the kids Ds1s aren't and its such a shame However, he won't really miss his 6th form whereas he was really sad to leave his secondary school (no 6th form sadly)
Jenthefredo · 10/05/2021 10:19

Ds1 got his geography assessment mark back...
A*! He is shocked!
Hopefully this means he will get his B he needs. The geography teaching has been diabolical so he really deserved it :)
A level results day 3 months today!
😬

Longtimenewsee · 10/05/2021 14:20

Hurrah @Jenthefredo. Excellent news.
It’s going to be a long 3 months isn’t it!

boys3 · 10/05/2021 19:37

@Jenthefredo A* great news Star. First (of the final) geography assessments / exams for DS3 this week.

Yay, well done him! Seriously jealous though, our school aren't even giving marks, let alone grades.... most annoying.
NotDonna · 12/05/2021 06:17

So pleased he did so well jenthefredo!
Our school aren’t saying anything either big woollyjumpers which is particularly frustrating when they had no mocks. Ours are on study leave for a couple of weeks but then back until the normal end of term. I’ve no idea what they’ve planned for those last 3-4 weeks. They kept them in to the very end post GCSEs 2 years ago too but can’t remember what they did.

Jenthefredo · 12/05/2021 10:36

Thank you :)
He just found out he got A* for his coursework too :)
Still no word on how politics assessment though
It will indeed be a looong 3 months!

Longtimenewsee · 13/05/2021 20:56

Hi all .. Is anyone’s dc still waiting for offers? Hope mini exams going ok for all. Dd has firmed and insured..and finishes school next week. it’s going to be a long 3 months until results for them all isn’t it ?
I’ve been trying to get Dd to choose accommodation for her insurance but she doesn’t seem keen to even look ( not sure why ... a bit too invested in her firm perhaps). I’m wondering if it matters - her insurance uni guarantees all first years accommodation. Have your dc ( if firmed ) sorted accommodation for insurance too?

chopc · 13/05/2021 21:40

@Longtimenewsee my DC will insure with either LSE or UCL. However both only guarantee accommodation for people who have firmed them.

Does anyone know any different?

Longtimenewsee · 13/05/2021 21:55

Ah I think it depends on the uni @chopc. You can choose accommodation for Edinburgh even if it is just your insurance offer... I’m just working out if it matters if she doesn’t iyswim
