@Vargas if your DS has a black suit he can wear a black tie with it instead of a dinner jacket and bow tie. That's what my DH did sometimes as it got a bit boring wearing a DJ. However a DJ would be a nice one off gift as well

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 06/09/2021 08:14

@KingscoteStaff thanks for that website. Ds has "Get creative and dress up as something beginning with the first letter of your name" as one of them, another is wear your pyjamas, another is "space gear = think space cadets, aliens and fits that make you feel out of this world!!!"

I know it is meant to be fun but Ds is just not comfortable wearing any sort of fancy dress so a t shirt would be great to show willing. He is already out of his comfort zone just being in a room of strangers Grin

Vargas · 06/09/2021 08:38

Thanks @chopc, I might see what I can get him from Next or similar. Although DH might be happy to hand over the shared DJ and get his own if need be!

DS does not want to engage with dressing up, so I will leave that up to him and he can get involved or not when he is there!

Great to see you all busy with purchases and moving in arrangements.

We have done nothing!

Dd still hasn't had it confirmed whether she's living in college or the student accommodation in the centre of Durham.

So unsure whether that's a "single bed - fully catered" or a "small double - self catered" so no point buying anything until we know once way or the other.

We are taking it in our stride and waiting patiently - she will make good friends and have a great experience in whichever pile she ends up in....

The student accommodation being offered in the City Centre is very good quality and we personally know of students who have lived there so no concerns - just waiting... waiting....

chopc · 06/09/2021 19:10

Oh Sugar! Didn't realise that the different accom would have different sized beds 🤦🏽‍♀️

jano69 · 06/09/2021 19:45

Oh dear sorry chopc - some are doubles and some are small doubles. College are singles.

Dd has managed to enrol ( I think!) . However , if anyone can shed light on the choosing of modules , then any help is gratefully received. She knows her compulsory modules (which comes to 80 credits )and that she needs to choose a language plus another elective module to the tune of 40 credits. We can’t find where you look at all available modules (to find out what they are) let alone put them into a timetable to see if they clash!
Does she need to choose now? Or will her dept be in touch at some point about this?

Quair · 06/09/2021 19:46

Are Durham doing in-person matriculation this year?
They didn't last year.

Peaseblossum22 · 06/09/2021 20:02

According to the website they are , two to three colleges at a time

chopc · 06/09/2021 20:03

Thanks @jano69

par05 · 06/09/2021 20:18

Dd has managed to enrol this morning after ringing durham, but still no time of moving in hoping its a sat, as 6 hours away and have booked a hotel for the rest of us but not dd 🙈

Quair · 06/09/2021 20:28

That's encouraging. I hope they do some in-person lectures and more in person tutorials too.

Vargas · 07/09/2021 09:19

DS seems to have enrolled now too, although it didn't give a very convincing confirmation. He has chosen some modules, although just ones in his subject, I didn't realise he could potentially look elsewhere, I might mention that to him as he didn't seem madly keen on one of the options!

Still no moving in time here either. And no word about accommodation. Baby steps!

SpamhappyTootsie · 07/09/2021 10:27

Hello, I’ve been lurking on here for a while, since DS chose Durham as his first choice. I have found the info on here really useful, as he tells me very little (tbf he is very organised and much less likely to worry about problems such as the accommodation than I am!).
He hasn’t heard from his college beyond not being reallocated, but expects an update on ‘InfoThursday’ this week. We’ll be doing the drop-off in one day as we are only 2 hours away.

Meery · 07/09/2021 15:10

Afternoon all, just when we thought things were settling down my dd has today received an invitation to defer, with £5000 bounty. This is for NatSci, but other courses such as liberal arts are also on list. Way to make the new students feel welcome Durham!

chopc · 07/09/2021 15:31

@Meery are you sure it was today? Because people were offered this a couple of weeks ago and I believe the deadline for accepting has passed?

Meery · 07/09/2021 15:38

Yes, received this pm, a different list of subjects to last weeks and given until 10th to respond.

Fawful · 07/09/2021 15:54

Oh we've just got it too... Subjects added include Comp Sci, Law, Physics, Primary Education, PPE... can't remember the others

Vargas · 07/09/2021 16:06

I guess they didn't get enough deferrals from the original list Hmm

SpamhappyTootsie · 07/09/2021 16:16

It all feels a bit erratic now tbh. I know many universities are facing the same issue but a secure offer of accommodation doesn’t really feel that secure.

chopc · 07/09/2021 17:19

Does this mean overall there are more people going to Uni this year?

SpamhappyTootsie · 07/09/2021 17:34

More people meeting their offers, maybe? Lots of deferrals from last year?

LeiatheSchnauzer · 07/09/2021 18:19

Dd also received latest offer. She is still set on going, it feels too late to start making plans for a year off which she has never considered. And not sure how confident she would be with the physics and maths after a year away from it.

chopc · 07/09/2021 18:50

I thought generally with Maths a year out is not recommended?

LeiatheSchnauzer · 07/09/2021 19:02

Quite. Dd is doing physics but it is filled with maths modules. Can't remember if pure maths was included.
