Hi Chopc,
congratulations to your incoming Woodsman on his allocation
Not sure if what I can say is any use, this has not been a normal freshers year, hopefully it will be very different for our DC's going this autumn.
DS loves being a Woodsman and says he still thinks it is the best college for him. He is in college at the moment due to wifi issues at home.
Due to the pandemic we have only been up to pick up and drop off, so not seen much. Arrivals day was different from the other uni's my older DC's went to, 2 of whom turned down Durham (just turn up, dump stuff and take them out for dinner before kissing them goodbye). Collingwood made more of an effort to welcome students, there was a big arch of ballons for people to go through as they entered college, lots of friendly Woodsmen/women in red T-shirts (college colour) to welcome them and help take their stuff to their room, music was blaring, I understand in previous years the college mascot is running around welcoming people but we didn't see him. Nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was really good. I would imagine other colleges did similar - there is a lot of good-natured college rivalry, DS is already ribbing DD about Hatfield
, it's like water off a ducks back.
Students have lived in households, have times when their household goes to the dining hall etc. no balls, parties etc. so not been able to mix as in a normal year, but still doing things with their housemates DS's original household was about 18 I think, which fragmented into smaller friendship groups. I suspect a lot have not yet found their 'tribe', DS included, although he has made friends. DS's household quickly went down with covid and were isolated.
Because of the limitation of this year, there isn't much to comment on, DS says the food is OK but gripes regularly that the girls are given larger portions than him, no self-service at the moment, so he just asks for more - there are lots of potatoes! He also says the cleaners are lovely and really helpful I generally get the impression that the staff are very considerate and caring.
Accommodation is a typical student room, bit small for a lad his size, but any bigger and he would just fill it will laundry. He has only just figured out how to turn down the heating.
DS very pleased with sports facilities at college, when open, although he is not in to a particular sport himself, just the gym - and he reckons Collingwood have the best bar (not open at the moment). Plenty of nice places to walk to get fresh air, so all in all he seems content, just disappointed he didn't get to party a bit more ... suspect he is hoping for at least one ball before he moves into private accommodation, hopefully there will be a refresher before the end of the year.
that was a bit long winded but hope it helps.
