@bigTillyMint thanks for the info. DS's main sports are cricket and Taekwondo (but ITF and I know the club in Durham is WTF). However he enjoys sports in general. Your description fits with what we have read about Collingwood so I think DS will be happy with his choice.

chopc · 26/02/2021 09:39

@Jan069 nice to hear from you again. Didn't know about the long family history in Durham ☺️

Jan069 · 26/02/2021 09:47

@chopc It was only when I put it in writing that it dawned on me we were now a true Durham family over four generations, took me a little bit by surprise too!

whoatethelastbiscuit · 26/02/2021 10:36

Hi Chopc,

congratulations to your incoming Woodsman on his allocation Smile

Not sure if what I can say is any use, this has not been a normal freshers year, hopefully it will be very different for our DC's going this autumn.

DS loves being a Woodsman and says he still thinks it is the best college for him. He is in college at the moment due to wifi issues at home.

Due to the pandemic we have only been up to pick up and drop off, so not seen much. Arrivals day was different from the other uni's my older DC's went to, 2 of whom turned down Durham (just turn up, dump stuff and take them out for dinner before kissing them goodbye). Collingwood made more of an effort to welcome students, there was a big arch of ballons for people to go through as they entered college, lots of friendly Woodsmen/women in red T-shirts (college colour) to welcome them and help take their stuff to their room, music was blaring, I understand in previous years the college mascot is running around welcoming people but we didn't see him. Nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was really good. I would imagine other colleges did similar - there is a lot of good-natured college rivalry, DS is already ribbing DD about Hatfield Grin, it's like water off a ducks back.

Students have lived in households, have times when their household goes to the dining hall etc. no balls, parties etc. so not been able to mix as in a normal year, but still doing things with their housemates DS's original household was about 18 I think, which fragmented into smaller friendship groups. I suspect a lot have not yet found their 'tribe', DS included, although he has made friends. DS's household quickly went down with covid and were isolated.

Because of the limitation of this year, there isn't much to comment on, DS says the food is OK but gripes regularly that the girls are given larger portions than him, no self-service at the moment, so he just asks for more - there are lots of potatoes! He also says the cleaners are lovely and really helpful I generally get the impression that the staff are very considerate and caring.

Accommodation is a typical student room, bit small for a lad his size, but any bigger and he would just fill it will laundry. He has only just figured out how to turn down the heating.

DS very pleased with sports facilities at college, when open, although he is not in to a particular sport himself, just the gym - and he reckons Collingwood have the best bar (not open at the moment). Plenty of nice places to walk to get fresh air, so all in all he seems content, just disappointed he didn't get to party a bit more ... suspect he is hoping for at least one ball before he moves into private accommodation, hopefully there will be a refresher before the end of the year.

that was a bit long winded but hope it helps.

@whoatethelastbiscuit thank you SO much for taking the time to explain. Really appreciated

Crikeyblimey · 26/02/2021 16:59

@whoatethelastbiscuit - I’d like to thank you too!

DS has been allocated to Collingwood and is pretty certain he will firm Durham, so it’s lovely to hear first hand info. Thanks.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 26/02/2021 18:06

@whoatethelastbiscuit even though my DS has been allocated South this is still really lovely to read. So thank you for posting it.

KingscoteStaff · 26/02/2021 18:43

DS is going back up on Wednesday! He phoned College, got through to one of the porters who told him he had 3 parcels waiting for him!

Beetlesand · 26/02/2021 20:52

@whoatethelastbiscuit yes- thanks for great post... very good to hear how a college has managed things in this crazy year!

janinlondon · 27/02/2021 13:08

@KingscoteStaff that's great news. Surprising how many of the freshers interviewed in that recent promo video listed "the porters" as one of the best things about College at Durham...!

chopc · 27/02/2021 14:23

What is the role of a Porter in Durham? Is that just another term used for college reception staff or do they actually carry your belongings to rooms or ?

KingscoteStaff · 27/02/2021 14:39

They sort post, open up and shut the main gates, share their views on sporting events, prevent first years from playing touch rugby in the corridors (with varying success), commentate loudly on first years playing dodgeball on the tennis courts, offer assistance when idiot first years can’t work their radiators/door locks/washing machines/WiFi connections, make severe remarks if first years wear football shirts of certain southern teams, cast scorn on any first years who suggest that the weather is cold.

They definitely don’t carry your luggage (the thought!) although they may walk behind you as you stagger across the courtyard and then point out that you dropped a sock back by the gate.

chopc · 27/02/2021 14:48

Sound lovely @KingscoteStaff . Feel the DC will be "looked after"

janinlondon · 27/02/2021 16:22

They storm the barricades if you report freshers on the roof....stall your parents if they have arrived unexpectedly.... redirect heaters from unused areas in college if your room has entered an ice age....send a text when a parcel or person you wish to avoid arrives....bring a ladder to get you down from the walls if you get stuck climbing over in the dead of night....call an ambulance if you are unaware you are exsanguinating or a bone is at an unusual angle.... front up to any young men who appear to be following you home or who they perceive might be "bothering you miss"...and most importantly, they know absolutely EVERYTHING that is going on.

KingscoteStaff · 27/02/2021 16:40

Yes @janinlondon, DS says all of his porter team have a very particular stare that they use if 'their' young ladies are being annoyed by males from other colleges!

OP posts:
chopc · 27/02/2021 16:40

Hmm interesting @janinlondon

Baytreemum · 27/02/2021 16:57

@KingscoteStaff yep! - the freps carry your 500 carrier bags of ‘luggage’ to your room!!

KingscoteStaff · 27/02/2021 16:59

That was one bass guitar and an amp that your DD had to carry for DS, and he said it wasn't even that heavy actually!!!!

OP posts:
Baytreemum · 27/02/2021 23:24

@KingscoteStaff haha! I wonder if he’s my DD’s college ‘son’!!!! He’s supposed to be musical!!!!

chopc · 28/02/2021 09:41

Is anyone able to advise what the careers service is like at Durham? Are students encouraged to think about possible careers after Uni in a timely manner or left to do the research etc themselves?!

cluelessy · 28/02/2021 10:26

Chop they don't all get their first! Some on that student room got what they put very low down. Excluded some self catering and the lovely looking hild bede (i think would be good as no sharing) because long walk. Excluded Trevalyn(?) as definitely shared. As you all said so hard when they have never seen the town and never hardly left the county. Thanks everybody.

chopc · 28/02/2021 11:13

@cluelessy I appreciate they dont all get their first but DS only put down the colleges he would be happy with so I think put down around 10 choices as opposed to all 17 in order

GoTrevs · 28/02/2021 21:44

I've lurked on these threads for a while now but haven't had anything useful to add because it's about 20 years since I was there though I enjoy the nostalgia as I read and it's interesting to keep up with changes.

However, as a former Trevs student, who can't recommend it highly enough, I feel prompted to comment after the pp said about excluding Trevs because of sharing.

I know there will be a minority for whom sharing is impossible (medical etc) but I would have thought that could be accommodated. For everyone else, you only have to share for one term in your first year and that's it. You can also state if you'd prefer to take pot luck and share in your first term or wait for a later term and choose the friend to share with. It's such a short amount of time and very fun, I'd be very sorry if someone discounted Trevs for that reason.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 28/02/2021 22:00

@GoTrevs, so lovely to read your post! Dd1 has been allocated Trevelyan which was her second choice. She wasn't keen on the idea of sharing but since the offer day feels really positive about it and is now considering choosing it for her first term.
She chose it because of proximity to department, size and focus on music. She was a bit disappointed to not get her first choice but is now really excited about Trevs and thinks she might now prefer it to her original preference.

GoTrevs · 02/03/2021 09:21

@LeiatheSchnauzer I'm so pleased she's feeling more positive about it. Which was her first choice? As I've read stated on here time and again 99.99% of people love their college and whilst they have individual characteristics, they're all great.

When I was there, Trevs had a reputation as the friendly college which its small size certainly played into. Whilst I had my group of friends, I could walk into the bar on any given night and find someone to sit down and have a drink with.

It was also the (possibly one of the?) top at the time for academic results. Not the top in all sports, but punching above its weight and winning in a few.

We also raised the most money each year in DUCK (like RAG) week which was a lot of fun.

No idea of the statistics these days, but of what I see in alumni newsletters, the fun and sense of community are as strong as ever.
