MsC data science

Not a lot of details available yet but I have the opportunity to put forward an expression of interest to do a funded MsC in data science (over 2 years). Would get study leave from work but I work full time. It would benefit the company as well. I also have an 18 month old but it wouldn't start until September. There is no guarantee I would get accepted and wouldn't have to take up the place if offered.

Is this a mad idea? I'm concerned I'll find it difficult academically as well as with the amount of time it would take up. Any advice appreciated.

Massive growth area..., what's your background? How recently have you studied? Is it a taught one?

Mizydoscape · 31/01/2021 20:36

@thesandwich I've worked at a STEM organisation for the past 5 years but don't have a STEM background, think data analysis type work. Last studied full time 10 years ago but taken a part time course 6 years ago. Yes it's a taught one at a local university.

Great opportunity IMO. Depends how much study leave you'd get from work and whether it would be enough to allow you to do the work around your other commitments.

Mizydoscape · 31/01/2021 20:48

@MilesHuntsWig the information I've got so far suggests you will be allowed 20% of your work time for study leave

What have you got to lose by applying? Can you find out more from the uni?

Mizydoscape · 31/01/2021 21:16

That was my thinking, it can't hurt to put in an expression of interest then i can get the detail, and decide if I want to pursue a full application later.

They haven't decided which university to partner with yet as they've said it depends on the amount of interest they get. So the course content would be dependent on which uni is chosen. The last cohort was university of Exeter though

If you don’t try....... you’ll never know.

MilesHuntsWig · 31/01/2021 21:52

Ok so that's 1 day off a week. I reckon apply and in parallel see if you can speak to the course organisers/other students to see how much time you'll realistically need to put in. Prob a good idea to ask the uni if any of the current part time students would be willing to have an unofficial chat. Good luck!!

data analysis experience is perfect for an MSc in data science. Go for it.
