Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT)

Hello just wondering has anyone done a EYITT course whilst being employed and how did you find it?
I'm contemplating if I want to do an EYITT course, I am currently employed as an Early Years Practitioner and I hold a degree in Early Years and Special Education. The EYITT course is very appealing to me as it is free but I am curious to hear others experiences if anyone wants to share them :)

Is it the same as the one originally called Early Years Professional Status? (Then Early Years Teacher Status?)

Yes I think so

Ok! I did mine about thirteen years ago. Had to travel to a university about six times for various sessions and assessments, was also assessed in my setting.

I found it very manageable with working at the same time.

Be very careful with this course of it doesn’t have QTS. Ideally you need to have QTS to teach and be paid accordingly. This qualification has caused a headache for me as although people who hold EYTS can be counted in ratios as a teacher- they cannot be considered the same as QTS so the qualification is problematic- particularly if you want to work in a maintained nursery school.
Have you considered PGCE that will give you QTS?

So I actually work in an academy over a maintained school. I ideally wanted to do a PGCE or school led but with the virus and the way things are I actually don't want to so it until next year September so for this September I was considering doing the EYITT course as it is for free and my employer gets a bursary to support me and at the end of the day if it doesn't give me an opportunity to become a teacher at my school I can always still stick to my original plan of doing school direct etc. I would want to find a academy school to teach in and then for my qts which can be done ina short 12 weeks course and take it from there. Mind me asking when you did your EYITT did you have to plan many lesson and carry them out and did it take you out of the job role you was currently in?
I have also potentially considered a teaching apprenticeship role which is something new I think

does any one have material regarding this?
the questions I need to answer are
A. Explain how you used your knowledge, skills and understanding of early childhood development and early years care and teaching frameworks and regulatory policies to reflect on the effectiveness of provision. Include a reflection on how you have promoted equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice.

B. Evaluate the ways in which you have fulfilled wider responsibilities within one or more settings, including how you have led and supported other practitioners, for example in teamwork and professional development.

C. Reflect critically on your reading and research into the skills of leadership and support and explain how this informed your decisions on which leadership and support approaches to use.
Describe how you have led and supported other practitioners in developing one or more aspects of teaching and/or care. Be specific about the approaches you used, for example, modelling, supporting, guiding, mentoring or other leadership skills.
E. Describe and evaluate how you influenced change and made a difference in a setting or part of a setting, demonstrating your accountability for children’s positive outcomes. Reflect on how you have influenced, shaped and supported the implementation of the new or revised practice.

If you're already working in an academy why is the pandemic putting you off doing a PGCE or QTS? In my experience ( I was a course leader for both EYITT and a SCITT) the workload and expectations were the same but unfortunately the EYITT didn't give QTS. I advise you to go for your PGCE this year, you'll be snapped up.

Why the preference for an Academy over a maintained setting if you don’t mind me asking

So the reason why I want to do the EYITT is because a) its free so I don't need to worry about even more student debt b) I can still keep my job as an EYP whilst studying and the school get a bursary which will cover me the days I cant come in or weeks should I say. Due to the virus there are a lot of places that aren't doing salaried and I have been on a salary since 16 I cant see myself coming out of a job to study. Plus I have young children at home and they are an expense and my expenses are too much for me to leave work and do a unpaid job. My plan was once I finish the EYITTS was to work as an early years teacher in a academy which I am already at and then do a part time course for QTS which some places are doing for 3 months for 3k which works out cheaper.

@jollygreengiantees the reason why I prefer an academy is only because I am currently working at one and have been for years so for me it is convenient to work where I am over finding a maintained school. Most of the schools in my Borough are part of an academy there are only a few schools that are actually maintained

@Sky1992 have you decided which route to take yet? I am having a similar dilemma, currently working in a maintained nursery school as an early years educator. I like the idea of the EYITT as I could continue working in my current role (I love my school!) while I study. If I go for SCITT leading to QTS I won’t be earning anything plus will need to pay for my youngest to attend before and after school care every day - which I definitely couldn’t afford with no salary. She also has complex additional needs so it’s not straightforward to arrange. But I have only read negative things about EYITT, which is really worrying me. I’m on the brink of forgetting the whole thing and sticking with my (badly paid) current position just because I feel so torn!

Hello hope you are well..... I decided to go with the SCITT course and won't be getting paid. Hopefully worth it in the long run
